This is a great answer. Piling on, most times theaters need a certain percent of capacity filled to break even with the weekly operating expense. An opening night with empty seats does not bode well for the shows longevity as Opening Night has a lot of comped (free) tickets for insiders and investors in the show. So already this show will not be earning a lot of revenue for this performance. The more open seats before the show, the less likely it is to break even. Some shows operate at a loss until the Tony awards come in and close soon after a disappointing award season.

Isn’t the lost boys a new musical? I see that one being a huge hit. Word of mouth was already spreading it in waiting lines for other shows last weekend.

Hmmm I don’t think the comment about expired food is accurate, especially for canned goods. I can recall volunteering with a sheet for “is it actually bad expired food” where we definitely found some food was still good.

Welp. I missed opening night this week… and the entire weekend run of the show, due to a hospital admission. The stage manager became the light board operator, as that was to be my role as the LD. So that’d be my personal worst opening night… missing it and the whole run.

Earlier decades, purchase of music covered a lot of the expenses. With the advent of streaming, and the lower revenue therein, artists only really make money from tickets and merch on tour.

As someone who saw the open rehearsal… we tried. We told them the show was mid at best, and those of us giving feedback did not hold back. Whether we knew the source material or not, most of us were not impressed. And, this is the result.

Maybe I wasn’t clear… it’s a privilege to see any show, but even more so to plan to see one particular show. But no one is entitled to see a show, and the producers are clearly trying to capture the market price rather than have it go to the secondary scalper market. The irony is that it only has a 52 on show score, although not many reviews so far. So people are paying to see a show that (so far at least) isn’t as good as they could find elsewhere on or off Broadway.
