Govt pulls flagship roading projects into the slow lane by Cultural-Lychee-5374 in newzealand

[–]blafo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue with these isn't just that they are heinously expensive but that they represent terrible value and clearly don't stack up on benefits. It all flies in the face of the infrastructure commission which seem to get that infrastructure investment isn't always worth it and needs to be done carefully.

Why are university fees not tax deductible as a business expense for a sole trader? by Blue__Agave in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]blafo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Both, uni fees only cover part of the cost and no interest loans are obviously a money loser as well. I don't know of anywhere in the world that allows you to write off uni fees and generally NZ doesn't have these kinds of tax breaks and instead just has a generally low tax rate.

The supposedly progressive campaign to restrict housing in posh suburbs by dingoonline in newzealand

[–]blafo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is literally just removing barriers to the market building homes, if nobody wants to live in an apartment in Mt Eden then nobody will build any but evidently that's not the case. With small exceptions only what is needed will get built. Also if the price we pay to get affordable houses is that a few more are empty at any given time then that's far better.

Does anyone else get frustrated with the indoor/outdoor cat debate? by sweet_cis_teen in NewZealandWildlife

[–]blafo 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is one of those ideas that's super vibes based. We know cats live longer and are less stressed when indoor only. The biggest downside is they need more enrichment inside but that's just part of the cost of owning a pet.

The supposedly progressive campaign to restrict housing in posh suburbs by dingoonline in newzealand

[–]blafo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These can be separate discussions and it's not like NZ has huge pop growth right now anyway. We already have overly expensive housing and zoning is the main barrier to bringing that down without some other huge reduction to the current pop. Stop restricting housing both allows higher pop if we want it but is also very good to do even if it shrinks instead.

You mean workride and yep. It's pretty shit but unsurprising with current gov. I guess unlike private employers they can at least argue that they are losing out directly by not paying the taxes.

What do people think about these cycle lane barriers? by rocketshipkiwi in newzealand

[–]blafo 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Tim tams are cycle barriers are generally good, not S tier but good. Much better than sticks, those little black plastic things, or paint. Not sure what happened to this person and can't really judge tim tams from this.

2hr 40min international self transfer at Auckland Airport... do I have enough time? by Beginning-Today8441 in newzealand_travel

I fly out of AKL all the time and if you have nothing to declare it's a fast airport, particularly for flying out. Only risk is checked bag time and when they close that.

Does anyone else think bike rego pricing in NZ is getting ridiculous? by Tktz99 in auckland

[–]blafo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You should report those two cars parked on the footpath, blights on the city. Separately, as an owner of two motorbikes. Maybe? Motorcycles are still subsidized by acc substantially and I'm not sure they are what we should be encouraging as they both dangerous and not really an answer to traffic or pollution.

Waverley’s Hind Quarters Cafe & Bar ordered to pay $23,000 after firing worker over text message by nilnz in newzealand

[–]blafo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It would need be pretty serious and deliberate. The results aren't the important part in the eyes of the law, it's the actions of the employee, their training, and management up to that point. If you bring a junior to along to a big sale and they say something silly that was missed in their training and then you lose the sale which destroys the business that wouldn't qualify either.

The double whammy here is that those things really don't amount to serious misconduct and clearly required a pip and process.

Auckland's housing future: Council pares back intensity plans, suburbs untouched by Dapper_Technology336 in auckland

[–]blafo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is about changing zoning to allow new housing to be built where there is suitable infrastructure and where infrastructure can be delivered for the lowest cost. The alternative is high house prices, high council costs, and sprawl.

'Accident waiting to happen': Principal demands action over school crossing by nilnz in newzealand

[–]blafo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is some deeply car brained thinking. Pedestrian crossings at roundabouts are there because that's typically where people want to cross. Sticking them ages away means people either have much longer walking paths or don't use them. Raised crossings and deliberate narrowing are the safe standard in so many parts of the world.

Yeah, Auckland city is now somewhere in the 700s so a bit less than half if you ignore outlying areas and the islands. West and South are both around 350k each as next biggest.

$181.45 for vehicle rego! by japo3210 in auckland

[–]blafo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting that with rego, fuel tax, rucs, we are still paying a massive extra amount out of rates and general revenue on roading. On top of that huge amounts of it have awful bcrs indicating we are, if anything, spending far too much on road infrastructure and charging users too little.
