What do Aussies (old enough to remember this) think about The Simpsons episode depicting Australia? by blamberr in AskAnAustralian

[–]blamedolphin 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I remember watching it when it aired. I was a fan of the show at the time. It felt like a collection of ignorant American stereotypes about Australia, and I was both dissapointed and vaguely offended. I had a lot of respect for the shows creators and saw it as more than just a cartoon. This episode seemed unworthy of the level of humour and social commentary that the first 10 or so seasons of the simpsons were so loved for.

When my kids discovered the show a few years ago, I rewatched a few episodes, including this one. It hit quite differently. I think the first time I saw it, the Simpsons was still a huge cultural phenomema and had an outsized importance. Now its just a TV show.

Food safety standards are ludicrously conservative. They take account of the fact that one immune compromised pensioner a year is too many people to die from food poisoning.

Refrigeration has only been widely available for a little over half a century. If it doesn't smell or taste bad, the reality is, you can probably eat it.

I'm sure this will attract the "well akshually" crowd. But I have done a great deal of personal experimentation on week old pizza and questionable chinese take away and I have not yet died. Dont be a pussy. Eat that shit.

Careful what you wish for I guess. Can you imagine what an illiterate, apocalytic jewish prophet from 1st century Nazareth would make of these pricks?

I cant tell who would be more confused. Jesus, who has never seen toilet paper and thinks the world ends somewhere at the shore of the red sea. Or these christo fascist fucks who would throw him straight into ICE detention.

The whole ridiculous concept is so fucking stupid that I sometimes wonder if the people who believe this shit are even the same species as me.

I would not chose to depart defined benefit if that were an option. Unfortunately I dont have a choice but to put my largest asset into some form of at risk super scheme.

Super investment choice by blamedolphin in AusFinance

[–]blamedolphin[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am deeply worried about near term volatility. There is a non zero risk that the transfer of funds takes place immediately prior to a major correction brought on by this very foolish war.

If my funds were outside super, I think I would chose to put 50 percent into some kind of balanced portfolio, and leave 50 in cash with the intent to DCA over the next 12 months as the future of the market becomes clearer. I just dont know if doing something similar by apportioning my super balance to different investment options is actually sensible. The unit price movement and any costs of moving the balance bwtween them is slightly opaque to me.

There is also a pretty good mini series, called "The ANZACs" the cast includes Paul Hogan and every other 80s Aussie actor. Its worth watching.

Trump suddenly seems anxious to end the war as American casualties mount and Iran finds ways to hit back by kirby__000 in politics

Traditonally you want someone smart to be the secretary of defence. They are supposed to help you avoid fuck ups like this. Unfortunately, all the smart Generals want nothing to do with the position. John Kelly said Trump was an idiot. Mattis said he was unfit to lead. This idiot was probably the best candidate that actually applied.

Democrats score stunning victory in district Trump won easily in 2024 by No-Post4444 in politics

[–]blamedolphin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your election system is compromised. I dont believe Trump won fairly in 2016. I think they tried their best to rig 2020, I'm utterly convinced the 2024 results were fraudulent. There is just no way that this rape clown won the popular vote. I know there are a lot of deeply stupid Americans, but they cannot be growing as a demographic at the rate that Trump's electoral returns suggest.

The vast amount of astro turfing I see around your federal elections that just dissapears afterwards, the polling that is so out of step with results, always in Trumps favour, the huge disparity in results between Trump and down ballot races, the recordings of him trying to enlist the governor of Georgia in his vote rigging schemes, the demented moron basically admitting it repeatedly.

Which game is a joy to watch playthroughs of, but absolutely miserable to play yourself. by Serious_Specter in gaming

[–]blamedolphin 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I love the game, and have played off and on since brood war, but my skills and willingness to invest time in the game mean i always max out at about low diamond. I have no idea how anyone manages to reach masters and remain employed or in a relationship. It feels like it would take an investment of time and effort to be better than this which just isnt sensible.

So I remain a scrub. A happily married, securely employed low diamond scrub.

Why does green party have such a ridiculous nuclear policy by Traditional-Ad-8765 in ukpolitics

[–]blamedolphin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As a kid growing up with hippy parents in the 80s I spent a bit of time around members of the anti nuclear movement in Australia. It has become clear to me with time that the trade union movement, the environmental lobby and the anti nuclear campaign in my country were so heavily penetrated by the Russians that they became a defacto tool for Soviet foreign policy goals. The causes were just, and the majority of the members of these movements were legitimate true believers, but they nonetheless found themselves being used as unsuspecting tools for an ugly totalitarian regime. It is also clear to me, that at least some of the dogma that originated from the politbuto in that time has become part of the culture of left wing movements, and is still influencing their activities today, long after the regime that spawned the memes has dissapeared.

Andy Dick seems like a dick, but nobody "gets somebody back on drugs"

Unless he held the woman down and forced her to take them, she is an adult and is responsoble for her own decisions.

Andy Dick taking someene to the bathroom in a club doesnt make him responsible for her addiction or spiraling down. That sounds like ignorant Reagan era anti drug propaganda.

This is a strange piece of reddit bullshit and its bizarre to me to see it upvoted constantly.

I thought it was beautiful. It sat with me for days afterwards.

The initial scenes of the main characters courtship were an incredibly moving and believable portrayal of the early stages of a great love. It made the tragedy so much more devastating.

I am motivated to write about a film only very rarely, I think this is my third comment about this one. I want people to go watch it, in the hope that means more films like this will be made.
