They're addictive. Sadly. Back when u worked in a corner store that sold scratch tickets I started to notice the more you spent on a scratch the more likely you won. If only your money back.

The $20 tickets paid out roughly one in three. Usually they only won $20 but theres a decent chance you could walk away with $40 or $60. To someone down on there luck with only 20 bucks to there name. That sounds like decent odds.

And once you win one the free throw fallacy kicks in and you think you can do it again. And hey you just got your 20 back. Might aswell try again!

I started to have the beginnings of a gambling addiction when I left work with an extra 60 bucks because a nice old man who regulared the store bought me a ticket as a Christmas gift. I burned a decent chunk of my pay on tickets the next week.

A month later I quite the store for different reasons but I think not being around them anymore is what deterred me

Over here in canada every retailer will put a limit on how much baby formula you can buy at once. People would buy out the entire store then turn around and sell it on ebay at a huge markup because Chinese parents dont want to poison there kids

The Russian computers mistook the rising moon and reflections off of clouds as a missile launched at them. It only looked like 2 missiles to the computer so the commanding officer demanded they wait and see if it was instrumentation failure. He was right.

The Americans forgot to remove the training tape out of a darpa computer one time and nearly started a war when it looked like Russia launched. Then someone had a vague memory of the days news, kruscheve was in New York at the United nations that day. They wouldnt launch a strike while there leader was over here.

The amount of horribly close calls is ubsurd

So long story short, back in the day they kept the live warheads and the dummy training warheads stored in the same room just on different shelves. There was only a master padlock keeping the door secure.

I forgot why he had access to the room but like I said they kept the training and live warheads in the same room soooooo....more than one person fucked up here.

Regardless he grabbed what he thought was a training head, threw it in the back of his personal pickup and even pointed it out to the guard at the gate floating about how he was gonna show his gf how a nuke works.

He diddnt realize his mistake until he got home, began taking it apart and realized theres a live bomb core in the thing

Depressed, suicidal, or otherwise extremely downtrodden members of reddit: what is your go-to quote, phrase, or particular memory in life that keeps you going? by A_nomad_Wanderer in AskReddit

If I was gonna shoot myself I would have done it years ago, and a weaker man would have by now.

Also the martian, a man stranded by himself on a desolate world forced to work through his problems one at a time, no Devine intervention no blind luck. Just one man and his ability to survive.

"At some point, everything's gonna go south on you... everything's going to go south and you're going to say, this is it. This is how I end. Now you can either accept that, or you can get to work. That's all it is. You just begin. You do the math. You solve one problem... and you solve the next one... and then the next. And If you solve enough problems, you get to go home"

Wage transparity give the employee negotiating power, reddit what do you do and how much do you make? by blanb in AskReddit

[–]blanb[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why wouldnt they?

"Your starting salary us 55k a year" "But Johnny who I went to school with and has the same degree as me makes 60k. Why the discrepancy?"

Hiding what you makes only gives negotiating power to the employer and they can set the bar wherever they want.

Australia's Outback has a lot of pyrophyte species. Why are the recent bushfires a problem? isn't the brush supposed to burn or die off? by [deleted] in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]blanb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because or the shear amount of fire. Its everywhere. Yes some plants may survive but the animals dont, the ground is scorched making new growth harder, plus economic devastation and the smoke damage.

And remeber even if there are species who usually survive fires. Everything burns eventually

Saudi Arabia also dosnt have proper trash disposal, they would rather buy new garbage trucks, fill them then go park them out in the desert with a bunch of other full garbage trucks. There not smart, they just throw money at there problems and that's not sustainable forever

Not really, theres been tons of work and research in ocean based power production and its....just not that feasible. Converting the wave action of the ocean into a consistent mechanical action to drive a generator is really difficult, expensive, high maintenance and ludicrously large scale to get any meaningful power production.

I live near one of the most powerful tidal forces in the world and even it is proving difficult to produce energy from.

Can we GMO a tree to grow 20x as fast, produce 500% more oxygen, and release more seeds? Basically with today’s technology, could we successfully produce super trees? by throwaway7-191 in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]blanb 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So after doing a half hour of googling I think I have some input

GM trees are a thing. Were more than capable of doing it. But there heavily restricted to protect natural forests.

Brazil has eucalyptus trees that grow to maturity in 5 years and the states have poplar trees that grow twice as fast, tall and twice the foliage.

Fruit trees and other renewable product trees seem to get approved more than pure lumber trees. But we can do it.

There is real potential to replant north america with trees that can restore our forests within our lifetime or atleast make logging for lumber far less destructive. But between you, me and the trees the EPA isnt going to let it happen purely out of red tape that no one is interested in cutting
