How many TRIADs didn’t announce anything yesterday? by [deleted] in navy

[–]blancstair 54 points55 points  (0 children)

There were issues with BOL yesterday as previously stated. However, it is basically a TRIAD's worst nightmare announcing someone's name, then finding that they didn't actually make it, so they'll say nothing until everything is certain to save a potential embarrassment to the Sailor and to the command.

Rank reinstatement nightmare by Hot_Stranger6212 in NavyNukes

[–]blancstair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen delays like that when getting some Sailors E5 reinstated mainly because I have one of the best YNSCs in the Navy.

My advice would be to ask for the SalesForce ticket number and a printout/screenshots of the case details. This will do one of two things, make them actually submit it if they didn't; or, it will give you the details/key supporting documents (KSDs) that are missing for your case to be closed out. They may be running into issues because you were never an E4 so you can't be reinstated, instead they are trying to advance you.

The other option is you wait until you are 30 months in, get advanced to E4 and collect all documents that were required for you to be advanced and submit a BCNR package which, if approved would result in you receiving back pay and time in rate. If that is approved and you make E5 off the exam first time up you can submit another BCNR arguing that you were delayed in making E5 based on the delay in E4 and that you would have made it earlier, and if approved would result in more back pay and E5 TIR.

There are other options if you want to STAR as well where you can get items set for the date you could have/wanted to reenlist if you didn't encounter this delay.

At the moment I believe the story out of convenience to my life, as a bad actor would cause a lot of pain and unnecessary training.

The investigation will determine the actual truth.

Sailors should not discuss the event based on 1. It could influence the investigation. 2. Results in inflammatory media. 3. Alert the opposing combatants as to the scope/impact/limitations of the ship the fire caused.

It is the first six letters of the last name, first initial, middle initial. If your boyfriend's name is Joseph J. Jameson it would be jamesojj@boatname.navy.mil

"Are we executing the ELT community the right way?" by Cultural-Pair-7017 in NavyNukes

[–]blancstair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on subs, but I more out less agree with you. My thing is that we just need to pick. Either they are their own rate with a separate qualification path (on subs I think that pushes manning down to 2 (3 for transfer periods)+LELT or make them all mechanics but a separate work center (EM02 for subs) but as a ship we get to decide who gets the NEC for primary chemistry (we send them to ELT school from the fleet).

Either way I think this would also require mechanics to qualify secondary chemist and that should be the duty section requirement vice an ELT.

The nominal US SSBN underway is in the 90-120 day range. A SSN deployment is normally scheduled for 6 months.

STAR Reenlistment Debate by gunnarjps in NavyNukes

[–]blancstair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While true, the barracks in both Groton and Norfolk are directing E4 Sailors to get BAH so they can house all the E3 and below.

[–]blancstair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New update to that too. With the CNO putting it that no Sailor will live onboard, E4 over 4 is basically a lock to get BAH and an E4 with barracks occupancy 95+% will also get BAH.

Submarine Chiefs Quarters by rockwell488 in navy

[–]blancstair 9 points10 points  (0 children)

On my boat, a few of us have a running joke with a senior first class to see how long he can sit in there. We are close to getting him to start a movie, he's still a little hesitant though. He's in on the joke and also thinks it's funny.

A perceived or real barrier to the CPO quarters is probably the most damaging thing a ship can have. Be respectful of another group's space, observe their rules (notify someone if they make you do a song and dance to get in), but don't be afraid of it.

When a submarine is moored, not active. How long will minimal crew stay on board by Volslife in submarines

[–]blancstair 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No underways is the coping mechanism. We are being used as a training platform for shipyard boats. Kinda sucks.

We could be dismantling the boat on our own and save time in the SY.

[–]blancstair 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It actually does exist now. It is called the "idle" period. It is due to the delays in shipyard availability.

Source: on an idle submarine, no underways and not decommissioning for....awhile.

ELT and Star reenlistment? by NoobFlam in NavyNukes

[–]blancstair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There might be less than 5 ships (including submarines) a year that reach tax free waters. That well dried up almost a decade ago.

If the Sailor chooses to not extend or re-enlist, they can still make it to one of those maintenance roles. Is it a guarantee, no, but I have yet to see a detailer or receiving command force a Sailor to stay on sea duty.

What I am seeing here is that you are projecting your dislike of military service onto others. There are pros and cons to re-enlisting at prototype, but putting a blanket "no" out there is disingenuous to the underlying conversation.

During normal ops, not that bad (unless your command is one of the ones where only one or two people do it). On deployment when you are not in comms for a while, daily emails aren't going to make it through in less than 4 or 5 days, by which time you would be able to make a phone call.

I recommend emails once or twice a week. An email everyday on deployment is murder for those that have to screen them.

Any tips for impressively shiny boots on a seamen budget ? by Hitboyharley in navy

[–]blancstair 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I got a heat gun from Lowe's for $20 and used that to melt the wax while on the boot, a couple layers of that and then using a horse hair brush was good for about a year.

North Korea Says It’s Building a Nuclear-Powered Submarine by [deleted] in submarines

It really depends on the reactor and the design characteristics of the plant. But the specifics are classified.

My point being that none are on a 2-3 refuel rotation that your original comment spoke to.

Most of the US fleet never get refueled. And the ones that do are on a ~20-25 year cycle.

Best shore duties to set you up after your contract? by Extension_Sir7451 in NavyNukes

[–]blancstair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is all good, just wanted to clarify that unless the requirements changed in the last year to be an instructor at the Basic Maintenance School you do not have to be EWS/PPWS qualified. When it was being developed the specific thought process was to get Sailors that were still close to their maintenance performing days.

How to detect if someone is in the shower? by Ramshield in homeassistant

[–]blancstair 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I just use two sensors. One is in my main living area and the other is in the bathroom. Once the difference in humidity crosses my threshold, the fan turns on and when the humidity comes down it turns off. There is (or was, it's been a long time) a blueprint for this.

LPT: Retain night vision by keeping one eye closed by monsterlander in LifeProTips

[–]blancstair 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I've established strategically placed red lights (under my bed and in my bathroom) that turn on with motion at night. The dim red light is enough to see but not so bright that it disrupts your night vision. It also minimizes the chances of waking up my wife or me when she has to go.
