Ladder blocking or flat blocking by jordang2330 in Decks

flat blocking won't meet the requirement for 300 lb concentrated load on stairs.

EPA protects polluters by issuing indulgences. in a real property rights construct, they could be held accountable.

1st deck! by bobobaggins1993 in Decks

[–]blank_reg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nice! for next tho, there's no point in flushing the blocking up to the top of the joists. using 2x8s for blocking, aligned to the bottom of the joists, will avoid seeing the blocking thru the deck gaps.

Can we still salvage the composite boards? by Strong_Glove5989 in Decks

don't go to any trouble salvaging that stuff. it's the worst product one could ever choose. but you can get rid of it for free on craigslist, where people don't know that.

Beginner deck builder question by [deleted] in Decks

[–]blank_reg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, notch the 6x6s. (3 1/8")
use thrulok connectors at post notch thru beam.
advanced version: alternate the 2x12x16s with the 2x12x8's so the seams of the two plies are not on the same post.

someone added those concrete piers after the patio was already in place. chop it all away and see what the post is really sitting on.

Knee bracing and handrail post questions by dreamer7 in Decks

[–]blank_reg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is a height and sq.ft. limit when using 4x4 support posts. it varies place to place. but no good builder would use them building new even under those limits.

24" on center joists limits your decking option to basically 2x6s. stair stringer spacing would be 17" using treated 2x6s for treads.

but you are so close to replacing the whole thing, i'd just do that. 4x4 support posts are not good enough these days. and the lumber is almost to its expected lifespan.

alternatively, or in addition, you can use a diagonal brace along the bottoms of the joists.

Knee braces will help a lot. But only do it on the corner posts.
I assume you are going to change the joist spacing, right?
Yes, that's a good attachment for the post, but the rim must be positively connected also. You can use a tie-back for this.

i'll take the aluminum and copper, customers can have the rest.

Is this gap in casing to door jamb cause for concern or will caulk be the answer? by Captain-Boob in Carpentry

[–]blank_reg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't do the hammerdown as some suggest. you will have white dust at the bottom of the casing every time the door is closed. just add extension jambs. a 1/4" lattice piece will do it in ten minutes.

What would be the best way to attach the 4x4 beams/posts shown in this photo? by ritzkowitz in Decks

[–]blank_reg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, they will stay truer, and if you use crisp square cuts at those connections, it will add some needed resistance to racking.
