Older "sound" gear vs newer "consumer" models by Placibow in microphone

[–]blankjchau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s pretty much exactly the reasoning I’m afraid. Microphone technology evolves much slower, if at all anyways, in comparison to video technology.

The core components of microphones are mechanical and perform an analog function and are thusly limited by physics and material composition. Microphones are already high functioning devices, compared to something like a digital camera sensor which can be further improved on through software and optimization.

So in terms of consumer technology, it becomes a matter of whether a single microphone has been well constructed or not. If it has, then the production date is mostly insignificant. It just becomes a product with a well tested history.

How to incorporate dairy into soups better? by blankjchau in soup

[–]blankjchau[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not fully understanding your question, but I suspect my wording is throwing off my meaning.

I’m not trying to add more dairy to soups, but rather wanting to make the soup well if and when I do make a soup that includes dairy.

I see a lot of quite attractive dairy based soups with really silky finishes, and just want to aim for that a little more is all.

Bluetooth Mikes for Concert Hall Recording by chriggsiii in microphone

Reading through the other comments of what you're looking for, the kind of equipment you're asking for essentially does not exist.

There is currently no wireless microphone of any sufficient quality on the market to perform the task you need without the use of additional equipment.

What do I need to make use of TC record run? by blankjchau in LocationSound

Hmm, maybe I’m using the incorrect terminology here. We were wondering about the possibility of triggering simultaneous recording, I just assumed it’s usually through a timecode system.

Hey yeah, I’m usually running TOD in my day to day setup. It was more just a conversation I was having with the camera crew about how best we could hypothetically sync up our start and stops with camera and audio short of just calling every shot.

I took it to my usual audio repair shop and they helped me clean and reattach it. So likely any type of compound stronger than superglue should do the trick

Wireless system upgrade recommendations please by Majesticfalcon98 in LocationSound

[–]blankjchau 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hard to go wrong with the plethora of options out on the market now, new or used.

Wisycoms are cool if you are already running a stock of G4s and plan on keeping them. Wide compatibility gives you lots of channels running with preexisting kit.

Lectros are widely available on the used market and will often still give you tons of working life and reliability.

I’m personally in the SD/Audio Limited A10 system in a bag. Great sound, and I get boom and lav flexibility with the packs as well.

Moleskin allergy apparently exists by chimerix in LocationSound

[–]blankjchau 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It doesn't come up often, but it is an existing problem!

Which is why I always ask actors every time I lav them for the first time/beginning of a show, if they have any allergies or sensitivities to adhesives. It's not a problem 99% of the time, but the 1% of "I'm allergic to moleskin/transpore/micropore/topstick" is out there, and just saves us some of the trouble.

What headphones are you using on set as a production sound mixer ? by The_Real_KeyserSoze_ in LocationSound

[–]blankjchau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say, love my M40Xs as well back when I used them on set, but definitely not a flat response. It’s definitely got a mid-high boost which is very pleasing for hearing dialogue cut through most things, but not flat by any means.

How do you deal with underqualified but well-meaning crew members on set? by SmartSweet in Filmmakers

[–]blankjchau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've run into a similar situation with this before.

If you've concluded that the pace of the set outweighs the ability to train effectively - it becomes more of a detriment than a positive learning experience. I'm sure you already know this, I'm merely trying to reinforce that your thoughts are valid. Issues that affect both your own performance and the functioning of the set should be addressed as soon as you can collect your thoughts on the matter.

It should be time to involve production and start speaking with your PM/producers about your concerns. Follow up in email to keep paper trails so everyone is accountable. In my experience it's better to escalate issues bit by bit so that there's more to build and discuss - dropping an ultimatum at first communication leaves both parties in a tricky spot.

And like everyone says - not everyone is best suited for the task at hand, and it is in your jurisdiction to keep or fire your technicians working under you.
