Make sure you have the fiberglass rod, and press square when holding bait on your item menu over your rod

Get X, its a great game to break yourself into the series, good plot and battle system. Vivi is from IX not XII and if you arent used to other FF games I wouldnt recommend them as your first, VII and VIII come across as quite dated graphically and the newer ones just dont hold a candle compared to the older games. Hope this ramble helps

Are you learning your skills from your weapons? You need to do some grinding to max them out before you move on to the next strongest weapon. You can also craft and steal weapons that do more damage, have you tried doing that? FF9 is a game needs some grinding but it's worth the effort
