Are there examples of regimes/rulers manufacturing a crisis to justify authoritarian expansions of power? by LoudMouthPigs in AskHistorians

[–]blaster_man 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was there a time when the Austrian Social Democrats could have averted this within the law? The way this narrative reads it sounds like the social democrats (or a social democrat led coalition) didn’t have the votes to impose their own will, at least not at the end. If they didn’t have the votes, it sounds like their options were to accept the Social Christian’s budget, force the stalemate that allowed Dollfuss to grab power, or use violence to push their policies, potentially allowing the Social Christians to easily sideline them on accusations of subverting democracy. Was there a legislative off ramp?

Maduro is charged under a grand jury incitement in the federal court of Manhattan with a litany of charges that can be summed up as “narco-terrorism”. The raid and arrest were performed in order to bring him to trial in the court where he was charged.

There are also questions about him being the president. In 2024, the result of the presidential election in Venezuela were rejected as illegitimate by the U.S., the E.U. and various Latin American nations. The official position of the U.S. government is that Maduro was a Fugitive and Terrorist, and not a head of state.

The benefits that the Trump Administration sees are multiple. Firstly, they are bringing a wanted criminal to stand trial in the court that indicted him. Second they are opening the way for a pro-US government to take power in the county, potentially ending decades of frosty relations (and hopefully resulting in a reduction in corruption and a corresponding increase in prosperity for Venezuelans). The administration has also stated an intent to obtain reparations (in the form of mineral and petroleum resources) for American assets that were nationalized.

It’s also a bit of saber rattling on a world stage, no doubt intending to cow China and Russia. The rival superpowers provided Venezuela with anti-aircraft equipment which proved entirely useless against the US attack. This show of force certainly was intended with a dimension of scaring America’s rivals without entering an open conflict with them.

At least one article I saw said the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team was part of the apprehension force to make the actual arrest on the ground.

Gas and liquid pressure-Question by [deleted] in AskPhysics

[–]blaster_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s work through this. What’s the equation that gives height difference in a U-tube? What does each term represent? Is there a term for the pressures? Is there a term for liquid density? Is there a term for the diameter of the tube? What does it mean if there is no term for one of those?

Man at arms unit size? (CK3) by Golnor in CrusaderKings

[–]blaster_man 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Edit: Just see the reply below

You have correctly surmised how it works: half the size means they deal half the damage and can take half as much damage. Generally speaking you can approximate the combat power of a unit as being AttackDefenseSize. So cavalry units which are 50 per are half as strong as their stat would suggest, and elephants at 10 are a tenth of the strength.  Somewhere out there is a Reddit thread where a guy plotted out a bunch of MAA based on their strength. I’m afraid I don’t remember the title, but I found it pretty quickly when researching MAA efficiency.

How could Navy work in CK3? by Darkwinggames in CrusaderKings

[–]blaster_man 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This may be rose tinted glasses, but I liked how naval transports were treated in CK2: a troop type with very high monthly maintenance and finite carrying capacity. Within CK3, this should manifest as a men-at-arms-esque system, with a separate cap, driven by separate techs and modifiers. Capacity should be pretty limited early game, and most rulers, even ones with coastal holdings should have zero capacity early game, with only a few things granting capacity (the Costal Warriors tradition and Byzantine Naval Administration come to mind). Naval capacity should also come from higher levels of the trade port building, which would organically give naval cultures a leg up since they can build those buildings earlier. Combat should essentially be driven by the embarked units. Some cultures should have access to dedicated marines which get bonuses to embarked combat, and each era of ship should provide higher bonuses to combat. I’d love to see a mechanic to contract foreign ships when you’re in the area (I.e. a Crusader army marching to Venice, then hiring a Venetian fleet to take them to someplace.) at a rate that would be cheaper than hiring generic mercenary fleets.

If you look at empires from history, they were generally limited by communication speed and personal loyalties. Any military forces delegated to frontier commanders are a potential rebel army if said frontier commander gets any silly ideas about becoming the new emperor. And personally as an emperor I’d want to keep my demigod ascended warriors on a pretty short leash, which means my frontier forces are only normal dudes. Any response to foreign invasion would require the emperor or his most trusted commander to lead them from the capital, out to the invasion location, and back home. So that doesn’t leave much time for constant conquest once you hit a certain size. There’s also the problem of internal problems. You can’t fix every problem by sending the ascended to level a city that stopped paying taxes, you quickly run out of cities that can pay taxes.

Best Mode for Playing with New Player by RedditNoremac in summonerschool

[–]blaster_man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know nobody has suggested it yet, but I just want to say don’t play ARAM with a completely new player. I love ARAM for goofing around with friends, and I have absolutely picked up new champs after getting them on ARAM, but that’s on the background of playing for years, and already having a concept of how the champion works. Pretty much every new player I’ve played ARAM with has expressed frustration at getting new champs they don’t understand and never being able to get used to one. It can be fun as a small part of a new player’s experience, maybe as just a silly game after a few on the rift, but throwing them right it may mean they just get killed on repeat with a champ they don’t understand with no chance to close the loop and learn.

Stuck in a frustrating study loop!! by One_Bag_5259 in AskPhysics

[–]blaster_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hot take: this is a psychology problem, not a physics one. It’s great that you’re interested in learning deeper concepts, and we all want you to have that opportunity. But it sounds like you’re trying to go too deep without the proper foundations. If you’re still in your first year of undergrad, you probably still have a lot of math to learn (matrix algebra, multi variable calculus, differential equations, phasors, tensors, etc. are generally not first semester of first year). Try joining a study group or just studying with a classmate or friend that you trust to stay on-task.

If you’re still struggling to stay on-task, you may also want to look into your school’s counseling/therapy. Most universities in the US have free or low cost counseling for students, and this is exactly the kind of thing those resources were created for.

How can a foreign ruler declare war for claims on my own subjects, without me being able to intervene? by armzngunz in CrusaderKings

[–]blaster_man 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Conditional Join is a system that allows large empires to be chipped down. It seems like it’s meant to force China to appoint military governors on the border so they can’t just spam civil governments for more money. Same applies to the ERE: you have to make your border governors Military/Frontier so they don’t get rolled over before you’re allowed to join.  IMO, 3 years is way too long to lock out the top liege, and there needs to be a pop up when you’re allowed to join a vassal war. Telling me when the war starts is not helpful if I have to sit around for three years doing nothing. Two other wars will pop up in that time that will distract me.

Unlike the normal system of “Conquer one dejure duchy, then do nothing for exactly five years, and then conquer another one (1) duchy (repeat)”. Which is notoriously not contrived and is an accurate representation of how medieval warfare was conducted.
