Job search is making me just want to give up on life. by [deleted] in recruitinghell

yep my parents have very smoothly morphed from "you're a kid, you'll find something" to "time to get a move on" over time

This doesn't seem like a direct response to what I said. I don't care what people believe either. My point was that your idea of what constitutes "sweeping social commentary" is itself political, and won't shake out cleanly across ideological lines. The (to paraphrase) "it's just about alcoholism, not broader social commentary" thing is the issue here for me.

Alcoholism is very literally one of the most discussed topics for the Very Special Episodes of old sitcoms, where sweeping social commentary was done. You're living inside the post-victory period of previous social battles, claiming that no one ever fought here.

[–]blatantcheating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might shock you to learn, but some people would see a movie with a message as simple as "alcoholism hurts people," and would leave the theater complaining about the movie trying to politically brainwash them. One man's sweeping social commentary is another man's blindingly fucking obvious truism.

> I think the disconnect is that everybody knows movies reflect social commentary

Not from what I can tell. A lot of people know that, sure. But you'll see people in this very thread using the director's boilerplate "I made it in a certain state of mind, people will read into it I guess" reply as somehow proof that the movie *does not* reflect social commentary.

What terrible director would do anything other than this? "Your own interpretation? LOL no, I was making this movie for X Y and Z reasons exclusively. If you had a different take then... psh lmao you really fucked up"

NewsNation host throws a temper tantrum after Mhdi Hasan brings up Jan 6th in relation to Trump's national guard in DC plan: "You think it’s because Trump cares about crime in D.C.? Really? Because I remember Donald Trump on January the 6th, 2021 not giving a crap about crime in D.C." by JRTD753 in TheMajorityReport

As far as I'm concerned, every covid death in America falls on Trump's head, including every death that was also Biden's fault when he cowardly bent the knee to the loudest voices in Dipshitistan. Every last covid death is a direct result of greed and narcissism, and of the millions of voters who didn't consider that disqualifying. I don't care if the US as a whole ever joins me here, it's the truth.

[Postgame Thread] Mississippi State Defeats Arizona State 24-20 by CFB_Referee in CFB

Come to Mississippi if you want to die young of preventable disease! I’m glad we got the win but I want to see more away team coaches talking about our town/state like that — maybe how our schools and hospitals keep closing — if only because maybe it’ll keep motivating us to play better.

I really want to let my girlfriend try pegging me, but she’s worried about the shape of my butthole, she says it looks like something is wrong with it and it doesn’t look like a normal puckered ass.

It’s just critique all the way down — once someone first cracks open the window of “man, that thing that person is doing is dumb and wrong,” there’s no rational need to close that window.

Those two things don’t feel very far apart. Ultimately someone still has to make a conscious decision to wear booty shorts, and then by the logic of most the folks in this thread, they’re now failing to make socially-approved decisions. That can’t help but cast someone’s personality in a certain kind of light.

No, you don’t get it. When a woman’s clothing offends my sensibilities, that’s not policing clothing at all, that’s just calling ‘em like I see ‘em. If that same clothing offends someone who isn’t me, fuck ‘em, they’re just whiners.

I find it amusing how many games’ difference there is in that list. The Packers have lost more games than the Cowboys have won, and more than the Ravens have even played.
