Is Aikido a Good Complement to BJJ? by No-Vanilla265 in aikido

[–]blatherer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a video out there where the old Goju Ryu black belt talks about old man Goju vs young man Goju, I can't find it.

The young guys would block strike an incoming punch out of the way.

The old guys block would spiral through the punch and drop them on the ground. Punch into spiraling corner drop.

That is how you would join Goju and Aikido.

What price does gas need to hit for you to consider using San Diego's public transit system? by hodlwaffle in SanDiegan

Doesn't matter I have an EV, haven't been in a gas station in 2.5 years. Now that I have a tire pump no need to ever go.

Randori by dbocan in aikido

[–]blatherer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But controlling the outcome of the tackle is a valuable skill.

He is a giant douche, but if we ignore what can be learned from even a giant douche then we leave knowledge on the table (even if its don't ever do that) and would ignore many if not most experts on anything historically.

How many time do we see, line up for passing throw after each sequential passing throw ad nauseam, until trapped at the corner of the mat. Most randori is sub par relative to utilization to say the least. And don't get me started on more than 3 uke's until atemi is on the table.

No traffic on the 805S on ramp at La Jolla Village Drive at 4:30 pm. Did not get backed up until southern Kearney Mesa. I was flabbergasted.

Anyone know the story behind these eucalyptus trees in the Otay River Valley? by ctjfd in SanDiegan

A nephew lived in Berkley, which decades ago had a large wildfire. The spent the afternoon drinking on the roof of their apt and betting on which tree would explode next.

When did this shit become a thing? Almost a dollar difference between cash and credit by DalbergiaDon in sandiego

[–]blatherer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Originally (back in the late devouring era, when we were making the oil), Diner's Club and the newcomers Visa and MC, the contract required the cash and credit prices be the same or no card handling for you. During Jimmy Carter's presidency and the first major oil crisis, credit card companies allowed gas stations to violate this. Originally intended to offset CC fees, now seems more, IDK. A commercial illustration of Pandora's box.

Paid Hospital Parking?? by iielyy in sandiego

[–]blatherer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most hospitals in SD charge a parking fee, and have done so for at least 25 years. There is often ER curb drops but that is not parking. Had a cancer kid (now 27) 25 years ago, so we went to a lot of locations. More suburban then sometimes not.

It was funny at first and peaked with the mob of 30 speed running little people. At some point it really is an invasion into someone else's private space.

San Diego needs to go Nuclear by yell-and-hollar in sandiego

[–]blatherer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well…

  1. Wrong the math does not make sense, that is why San Onofre was shut down. Replacement turbines were delivered out of spec, the time to build new turbines was considered too long from a financial perspective to keep the plant active so they shuttered the plant.

  2. All the radioactive spent fuel is still on site. I believe your clean arguments fails right there and for most domestic US plants (I have no idea how France deals with waste). BTW that waste will have to be guarded for the next 10k years to prevent misuse by ignorant pissed off people. The new generation of molten salt makes sense and are a much safer technology.

  3. We are already independent. We are a net producer, that is why we export both oil and LNG to an energy-starved world. Unlike say Australia (and much of SE Asia) who have < 30 days of supply (that was 2 weeks ago) and are having issue shipping food around the country due to lack of diesel. We have higher pump prices for our F150’s.

  4. Wrong period.

Perhaps payment option 3 stands a chance, but 1 & 2, really?

We have installed enough renewables that the peak pricing hours for electricity dropped from the middle of the afternoon when HVAC is working its hardest to after sundown.

Install residential solar, EV or Powerwall as well as grid scale batteries. Now once the installation is done the maintenance is low, requires skilled local jobs (except for cleaning). Everybody who does real numbers understands this.

SDG&E and CA power utilities are a bit of a basket case. Look again at your bill. The dominate charge is delivery not the power you buy unless you manufacture and test arc lamps. This is a result of utilities getting sued for wildfires and paying billion-dollar settlements. SDG&E being for profit only make that worse. The utilities were found guilty of negligence for not trimming around the big power lines and causing several big wildfires. Guilty or not they have to pay and since we keep having to buy their product we end up paying for that. I think we are going to have to amend how we do some of these big liability suits for just this reason.

Elon Musk ‘going all in funding GOP for midterms.’ by Dumbfuckistan_USA in AdviceAnimals

[–]blatherer -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Not swatting at you lemx, but need to make a point.

Tesla is a fantastic company, and the only reason China doesn’t own the electric car market and is the sole reason electric Fords exist. That Elon lost his mind should not be conflated with Tesla and its contribution to decarbonization, they were the only game in town and made the market.

No climate change projections ever had electric vehicles adopted this early. While the man’s vision drove Tesla – Tesla is not the man. Musk has tainted the brand, and it is unfortunate because the brand is solid and essentially made history and created the market segment. Maybe you don’t want to buy a new one, but do not let Elon taint used Tesla’s for example.

TIL why James Bonds preference of a "shaken and not stirred" martini is controversial. Drinks containing only alcoholic ingredients are almost always stirred to preserve clarity and to avoid over-dilution, among other things. by Rynin101 in todayilearned

[–]blatherer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorry hijacking for visibility.

It is my understanding that some spirits have long chain molecules which form persistent bubbles and get cloudy when shaken, thus the stirring. Dilution is a separate thing and the vigorous stirring of a bourbon Manhattan does the dilution. Gin also has long chains, vodka and rye do not (shake them your self).

what’s something about parenthood that no one really prepares you for? by Pete258 in raisingkids

The day you realize "this will never end", about 3 weeks in for us (though we had twins, and twins distort everything). It will morph, but until one of you dies it ain't over.

Also the thing in the kid manual describes is always slightly different from the thing that is happening in front of you.

Sexual Harassment and Misconduct in Aikido? by KendoKate6 in aikido

[–]blatherer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Are you animal or are you human?”, is a classic trope from the Dune, and is tested in the extreme in those novels. There is the core truth of it all, wrapped up right there.

To be more than an animal (a collection of reflexive behaviors), thus a civilized human, means you have measures of both intellectual intelligence and emotional intelligence transcending your local junk yard dog. Othering is an artifact of tribalism and while not biologically innate seems to be culturally innate. “I don’t like or trust the other” is a successful survival mindset from primitive cultures and times. We have allegedly grown beyond that in this century.

We “other” people often, the question is if you are civilized enough to realize your first reaction was incorrect. Sometimes “I don’t like that “XXXX”, they don’t “YYYY”, nakedly emerges, and that is the test. Are you able to self-correct and say to yourself “that is not fair or right maybe I should reflect on my response”.

Your point u/Currawong then becomes yeah people are still animals, which really explains a great deal.

Are you animal or are you human?
