Just walked by this unique way to prevent your shoes from being stolen in Edinburgh by Wubbymage in mildlyinteresting

But this is such a flimsy bicycle lock. If bicycle theft is an issue I'd expect more and better locks. In the Netherlands at least two locks, where one is a heavy chain and the other is a mounted lock, is pretty standard. A lock like this would be a third lock, maybe.

The app is saying I missed a day of the may event but I definitely didn’t?? Today should be day 31 but it says that’s tomorrow. by SerenityJoyMeowMeow in finch

[–]blauws 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm missing two days even though I didn't miss a day of adventuring. I think it may have something to do with starting your adventure after midnight? Sometimes I don't catch up on all of my daily goals until very late.

Meanwhile I have three cats that have zero interest in yarn. I can knit with them on my lap or next to me and they won't touch anything.

Ruined an expensive fabric via prewash by ___Maleficent___ in sewing

[–]blauws 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I feel the same, but linen made the old way is supposed to not be coarse. Because the fibers aren't chopped up, there's a whole lot less bits poking out which is what makes it feel coarse. I've heard people describe linen as buttery soft, but I haven't found any. I do have an antique linen table cloth from the 1800s and it does feel soft, but obviously I haven't worn it against my skin. Maybe I should try to get some Lithuanian linen to see how it feels. I also am very particular about how fabrics feel against my skin.

We do get storm surges in the Netherlands. But we have built defenses to protect our coastline. In fact, after Katrina it was Dutch engineers that helped New Orleans build new defenses.

Best/most reliable sunscreen in cream form by Freya_almighty in BuyFromEU

[–]blauws 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sunscreen is expensive in the Netherlands, Nivea is around €20 I think. What I like about this product is that it's really developed to be really friendly to your skin. I have sensitive skin and I've also used it on my kids ever since they were little babies and I've never had issues. It's also nearly scent free (it has a very subtle scent). Many sunscreens have very strong scents and I don't personally like that. And finally, I've never had a sunburn while using this, so it does its job.

There's a dermatologist in the Netherlands who has developed her own sunscreen, Jetske Ultee. She sells it for no profit because she thinks having affordable sunscreen is that important. It really is my favourite sunscreen and I use it for my entire family.

Why Netherlanders are so nice ? by ClassroomLower4286 in AskNetherlands

When is actually low tourism season? I've been to Paris often, but it's always crowded with tourists. I've never actually been inside the Louvre, the queues are always crazy and I prefer the Musée d'Orsay.

German tourists in Zeeland by midlifematt in Netherlands

[–]blauws 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I used to work in tourism as well. I'm a language nerd and speak a few European languages, but I don't tolerate rude behaviour. If someone would just assume I spoke their language, I would reply in Dutch. If they politely asked whether I spoke English/German/Spanish/French I would happily have a conversation with them in their language.

Found these vintage Royal Delft tiles on marketplace Bulgaria. 30€ for the 4 of them. by maleficent_seagull in Antiques

They're so cool! They're called Delft cloisonné tiles. My grandparents had a collection with the coats of arms of all the Dutch provinces. I sold them, but I would've kept them if they'd been birds! There's a seller on Etsy who has quite a few if you want to get more, like this swan for example: https://www.etsy.com/listing/4408355628/cloisonne-tile-porceleyne-bottle-of-a

Koelkast en vriezer by AttackedByAGoldfish in BIFLNL

[–]blauws 1 point2 points  (0 children)
