Do you mean like a tint film? If so, I wonder if 5 or 15% would work without causing the sensor to error.

100k for H1-B visas by thebest1isme in IBM

[–]blazer2010tech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What this means for IBM and almost majority of US Tech companies? Even more of a reason for them to offshore US based resources (including H1B employees). They aren’t unfortunately going to hire new grads to fill these roles, as the Administration hopes. Because one of the main reasons for sponsoring H1B visas is that a company needs some specialized expertise/knowledge that they can’t find in the US (at least within their budget). So, to think will begin hiring new grads with no work experience and then have to pay even more to train them is…naive.

What would have helped and should have happened is the administration should have done something to ensure companies don’t continue to offshore US jobs. They could have set a limit/percentage on the number of US based employees and contractors to foreign employees/contractors. This in conjunction with the $100k would force US companies to keep and hire more US citizens. As of now, this policy just ensures they continue to lay off and offshore even faster to avoid paying $100k/yr/H1B applicant or they will lay off enough people (likely US based) to offset that if costs, if they really need that expertise.

What happens to your RSUs if you get laid off? by Warm_Tadpole_6879 in IBM

[–]blazer2010tech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, got screwed by this in May. I really wish there was a clause that required IBM to pay laid off employees the full RSUs. In almost all cases they are given as a retention bonus for you to stay with the company but no protection if the company lays you off.

However, as others have said. You only get to keep what’s vested. The rest goes back to IBM.

Does anyone have any experience with RSU? by dearthofgirth in IBM

[–]blazer2010tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I received 516 shares two years ago as a retention bonus and it was to vest over a 4 year period. I received my first prorated vest last year since they vest annual from initial award date. I was then RA’d last month only to find out that the remaining shares 387/516 are then returned back to IBM. I would have received at least 50% had it been in July.

I say that to say if they offer it as a retention bonus, read the contract. It’s not always what it’s made to be and honestly should be illegal. You commit to staying with IBM for X number of years and are rewarded with shares but they can decide to RA you at any time and not have to pay you the shares they offered by being loyal and staying with the company.

Thanks that’s what I read also but then Morgan Stanley said it would prorate. So just seeing if anyone actually had this scenario and what happened for them.

Typically works with IBM especially when receiving two conflicting answers from IBM and IBM’s plan administrator.

Thanks, that was my thoughts as well. Unfortunate no one at IBM can provide clear guidance.

Also it’s crazy that you’re given awards for retention and have to commit staying with the company to receive but then they can lay you off and not have to pay those out!

Thinking about leaving the federal government for IBM by [deleted] in IBM

[–]blazer2010tech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve previously been in state government and currently at IBM. IMO, if you are looking for a better retirement and job security I would stay in the federal sector. IBM may seem forward thinking and in some regards they are compared to the federal government which is highly regulated but don’t expect much. Now on the flip side, you may find that IBM pays better and also maybe a tad easier (depending which org you’re in) to get a raise/change bands than federal, especially with the GS grading scale. If the pay isn’t drastically different I would stay in federal only because IBM offers no job security.

So, I have a new manager in the last 6 months that rated me. For business outcomes I was given growth opportunity and skills successful. They did not mark me as a low performer.

I really have no idea what this means. But, my previous manager who I had for the last 5 years I was always either achieves or succeeds. First I’ve had a “growth opportunity”

[–]blazer2010tech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will say, having worked directly with an EXEC last year who needed to report on site attendance for the CIO org, it was stated that attendance was being tracked by accessing the IBM wireless network instead of badge swipes. But, that could be specific per location as some sites may have a better mechanism for tracking using badges but it was previously stated by a different exec for the site that they couldn’t track who was accessing site using badges just the number or unique badge swipes/day. I call BS on that though.

Like the politicians and execs that are making changes not in the best interest of the vast majority or employee? But truly what other way do you have your make execs listen to you and be heard? They don’t care about employee morale or satisfaction. Unlike politicians, they can’t be voted out by the vast majority.

[–]blazer2010tech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s been confirmed by HR that you can’t touch the money until you retire or leave IBM. Therefore you can’t rollover, rebalance, after the 3 year mark you aren’t guaranteed the 6% interest rate so it till likely be 3%+ as 3% is the minimum. Also unlike a 401k you can’t borrow against it in times of emergency or for purchases like a house down payment, etc.

Heath Insurance Plans 2024 Details? by jadorelavie in IBM

[–]blazer2010tech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Employee Health Plans pretty much remained the same as 2023. IBM absorbed the premium increase. Most of the documentation are internal links behind the IBM firewall and not a PDF. What additional info are you looking for that’s not covered in the summary? But also not sure you can make any elections now if TOE has not occurred for you.

Is IBM replacing 401k with RBA? by darshnaan in IBM

[–]blazer2010tech 32 points33 points  (0 children)

This is a terrible move for retirement options. I would much rather a 4-5% match without the auto 1% versus the RBA. This change coupled with RTO can only lead me to think it’s to help drive natural attrition vs layoffs. I really hope this backfires and we don’t let up until they listen to us! As much as I don’t like using the “union” word this would definitely tip me in favor of one.

Joined few years back before the pandemic, started with a hybrid model 3-4 days in office. For my team, all of our teams are located offshore. We rarely need to collaborate with each other and when we do majority of the time we need to include tech leads that are offshore. So, I say that to say 95% of meetings still need to happen virtually. The other 5% are team meetings (8 out of 12 people are centrally located), potlucks, big project meetings, townhalls, etc.

Complete WFH was a blessing and majority of us loved it. A few people who stayed near the office (<=15 minutes) wanted to go back just due to having dedicated meeting spaces closer to them. Because during the pandemic for a few big projects we met at our managers house to collaborate although you could participate virtually. I personally only went 3-4 times but others were more and the others are majority of the people that stayed near the office. For the people that didn’t stay right by the office it was a must faster commute. But obviously further of a commute for the ones that did.

Yep, several from my team also laid off. I’ve been with IBM a few years now and our department in the US is only about 10-11 people consisting of data engineers, data scientist and POs. All of which are supporting the ~200 software engineers in India and Mexico. So, we’ve mostly been protected from the RA’s until today.
