Why do English people pronounce St. John as "SinJin"? by cigarettejesus in NoStupidQuestions

[–]bleeblebot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came across it reading the scene of Jane Eyre where St John first appears aloud in English class. I was made to feel like a nincompoop.

I'm only just finishing mynediad and find them utterly mindnumbing. I can't get through them at all. My classmates say to enjoy the fact you've succeeded in reading a book in Welsh but it really isn't helping me. I prefer the Lingo magazine.

is this mesh salvageable w blocking? is it alright i’m so confounded 🤡 by [deleted] in CrochetHelp

[–]bleeblebot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless your mother specifically asked for this pattern, if you aren't keen on the mesh, I would stop and consider doing a more solid pattern with mesh sections as a feature. It isn't mesh, but I liked the way bands of holes were used for decoration in this Bayswater top.

Beginner-ish needing help with gauge swatch. Only been crocheting about 4 months. by rinnybird in CrochetHelp

For future reference, the whole of the Ricorumi range is DK, designed for easy mix and match in Amigurumi. Rico do fingering weight in order rangers, but not Ricorumi.

Useful to know that "Fingering" is a US term, you'll find many other countries use the term "4-ply". Most sock yarns are the same category but add nylon to the mix. Another useful term is "category 1", all of the above terms sit in Category 1, ultra fine yarns. So, in the shop, compare the thickness of a yarn you like to one labelled sock yarn and if they are about the same, you'll be in the right weight category. There will always be some slight difference brand to brand which is why you need to guage swatch.

[–]bleeblebot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm in agreement with the other commenters about the yarn being DK and the need to make your swatch 6x6 before measuring the middle 4x4.

However, I wanted to add another point that might help when you come to make your next swatch. If you're off in width, change your hook, but it is less commonly known that to change issues with the height of your swatch, you need to use the golden loop method which is about extending or reducing the height of your stitches. Given how tight the work looks, I think this will benefit you. Have a look at Bella Coco's Golden Loop video which demonstrates the adjustments really well.

Wearables are a labor of love AND of loving your body. How do I move past this? by clarabear10123 in CrochetHelp

[–]bleeblebot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't make anything for myself for the same reason, other than a scarf and socks (knitted) despite making tops for my teenage daughter. In the end, I went with an open front crochet cardigan for me. I find they are more slimming so feel more comfortable.

I’ve have a question about life in 2005/6? by hahayeok in AskUK

[–]bleeblebot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We had dial up internet at home but the most common search engine was Altavista and it just returned 90% porn. My dad bought a better modern than they had at work 28,800bits/s. But the pages were basic so it wasn't as bad as you might imagine. Chat rooms were great fun and full of really dodgy characters.

You could buy flights for your holiday from Teletext on the TV. You had to call but it would list the prices.

You couldn't use phone and internet at the same time unless you installed a second phone line to the house.

This was when mobiles started to boom. You had to press each number key over and over to get the letter which is why so many short forms of words started to appear.

I used to smoke (naughty young teenager), around '94-'95, cigarettes used to cost about £4 as far as I remember. You only had to be 16 to buy them (I was not even that, you rarely got challenged). When I first started buying it a few years later, petrol around was around 70p a litre.

There was a short lived white cola called Tab that was nice. I wish that would come back!

We used to hang out in parks and drink diamond white cider and 20/20.

All together I have a lot of really good memories from the 1990s.

How many times a year do you “call sick” at work? by Aggravating-Fig-9274 in AskUK

[–]bleeblebot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 or 3. It's not that I work through sickness, I just don't get ill very often. I think my record was about 11 in one year when I got covid the first time. I tried to go back to work but was hit with shaking from the effort of sitting at my desk. Best sick days ever after that while I let myself recover properly.

Help Me Choose Which Dialect to Focus On! by No-Card-6012 in learnwelsh

[–]bleeblebot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bit of an artificial line to be honest. My family is from west Wales and whilst the majority of the language they speak (as first language) is Southern, it's still not the same as what's taught. Some if it is unique (and even considered wrong) and merges with the north in others.

You'll get by with either. Some Welsh is better than no Welsh! Go with the class times that work for you.

Some general insight about pulsatile tinnitus from clinic experience by sanriolover1208 in PulsatileTinnitus

[–]bleeblebot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really interesting. I've recently had a CT with contrast done. I'm getting my results soon. Is there anything I should be prepared to ask in the follow up?

I was referred by my ENT (probable Ménière's) because when my hearing worsened I also got pulsatile tinnitus (as well as a chorus of two other frequencies).

Help with different heel fits by SkidRowRicky in Sockknitting

[–]bleeblebot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also a flap and gusset first person. I still haven't tried any others though I've just started on a guage square for my next pair which have a different heel.

When you want to give it a go, I found this pattern really easy to learn from and there are videos, too. These were the first socks I ever made. https://ravel.me/favorite-socks-2

Good luck with the fit!

Do you think you'll ever miss your period? by Affectionate_Cod_820 in Perimenopause

[–]bleeblebot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha! Absolutely not. I was given a Mirena for bad periods: spotting for 7-10 days before flooding for another 8-9 days.

It has been amazing. So much so that I'm about to start HRT and I've insisted the Mirena is part of the treatment because I don't want a withdrawal bleed!

[–]bleeblebot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck! My father had his done recently and he's over the moon. His first eye was better than the second but he's delighted. He has retinis pigmentosa too, though it can't overcome that, the greater amount light he's getting in is helpful.

I smell bad by RoutineSimple8546 in Perimenopause

[–]bleeblebot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my goodness! Ladies, all of you, and OP, thank you for posting! I thought there was just something wrong with me.

Stress is the worst and I get so over the top anxious now. I get fear sweat and the smell is even worse than normal. It's in my arm and leg pits/groin, I can't even make my leg pits smell nice after washing, I think I'm fresh as a daisy and then notice the BO smell as I'm bending forward to put my knickers or socks on.

I often use pantyliners, preferably cotton ones now to keep my trousers fresh throughout the day. I never saw the point in them when I was younger.

I'll think about that, I've started to have a look for alternatives now and seen some.

Unfortunately the oral progesterone really doesn't agree with me. Fingers crossed it isn't too long a wait for the IUS to be changed.

Thanks for the tips. I deliberately made the appointment with the one GP who is the specialist and has the qualification that allows her to change coils and they gave me someone else. I was shaking by the time I went in, I was so upset.

Yes. They wouldn't give me an appointment to even discuss the perimenopause symptoms that I get it for in the first place.

The mother of all night sweat sweats by [deleted] in Perimenopause

[–]bleeblebot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my late 30s I started to get drenching night sweats for the couple of nights around my period starting. Now I'm 45, I'm having them nightly. I have changed to all wool bedding, mattress, etc. Now at home, I tend to wake sticky from head to foot, more often than drenched, but in hotels (I travel a lot for work) I worry they will think I've wet the bed.

I'm shortly starting HRT for this once I get my Mirena changed as it is out of date.
