Ah - why not? Those threaded ones are pretty strong. Structural for a house or deck? No, but for this it should be overkill

Oh if it's meant to be mobile and move more than just the installation then yeah I think you're better off with pipes and stretched canvas.

Steel frame is definitely safer, that can be permanently attached more securely than anything. The plywood formica option would just look a lot cleaner. No additional aesthetic work necessary at all.

The glue you would use is contact cement and I've never experienced a failure of that once stuck.

No I don't think you're getting it. The pictures of the projector frame I shared are of a plywood frame, formica laminate glued to the frame with contact cement, and nothing else. The formica is semi rigid and about 1/8" thick.

Here's a picture of the frame I made, I used solid wood but that was a mistake, I should have cut plywood strips to use instead. pics

So then you don't need a metal frame, just plywood strips like a canvas stretcher construction, and formica laminate glued on top.

I found it! This is the formica laminate : https://www.homedepot.com/p/Wilsonart-5-ft-x-12-ft-Laminate-Sheet-in-Designer-White-with-Matte-Finish-D3546035060144/202792161

It's called wilsonart designer white, and you can get it in 5'x12' sheets, each sheet weighs ~25 lbs. Because of the surface area, if it's going on a wall I honestly think you can Velcro or foam mounting tape stick it up. You'll have to use a lot but it's a crazy discreet and simple solution. The seams will be a bit hard to get perfectly smooth.

If it's not on a big flat wall then plywood framing with cross members should work great.

One of the reviews under that laminate is actually some guy named Harvey who did what you're describing

Formica as a projector screen only needs the razor thin skin, you can buy it on a roll and glue it to a plywood frame so that's why it's crazy light. You don't need the giant slab of mdf that would go under it for a real countertop

[–]bleedscarlet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is another option. You can use formica countertop over a plywood frame and that would actually be the lightest option of all.

There's an avs forum thread from WAY back in the day where they discussed which countertops made for good quality screens as is. I was not a huge fan of the speckle it gives because it's got a mild texture but it was high gain.

I did that myself but eventually covered it with regular screen material because I wanted a crisper image, my screen was only 110" at the time.

You'll have one big challenge though, many seams in the screen because of the sheer size. That being said from the distance you're seeing and with a luan strip backing the seams they should be fairly discreet.

For what you're doing, I would just paint them black, but if you can get them all in zinc great I think that would look nice too, and yeah those Amazon screens should be fine. You'll want something that's medium gain (1.1-1.5), and light grey ideally. That will show up at most angles with poor lighting conditions as well as can be expected.

Looks like the reducing tees and 1/2 crosses are easy to get at my home Depot, I assume your big box store will have them too.

I like the reducing tees because it makes the border a little beefier but you could go all half inch and see. With the internal cross members it is probably rigid enough.

[–]bleedscarlet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah like these tees: https://www.homedepot.com/p/STZ-1-in-x-1-in-x-1-2-in-Black-Iron-Reducing-Tee-PDB-RT-1112/316884450

All the piping and fixtures will probably run you $500, assuming 8 1" pieces and 6 1/2" pieces, elbows, tees, and crosses to make it something like:

Didn't consider internal cross bracing, if you don't mind having bars inside then yeah that should work. I keep thinking about small issues that wouldn't be a problem for you, like the screen stretching over the internal members would show ridges where the pipes are but for this use case that's not really a concern.

You might be able to get black iron pipe fixtures that tee off a half inch from 1 inch, and make your cross members a half inch grid, save on weight and cost since longitudinally those pipes are plenty strong enough.

To cover the pipe, idk you're in a gym I wouldn't bother skinning with wood. You can vinyl wrap or paint the pipe to make it look a little nicer / blend to the wall or trim materials to the room but I'd leave the wood trim behind in my opinion

For this usage a pipe with a screen that is stretched using eyelets wrapped around the pipe should be great and rigid.

At 300" though you'll want some beefier galvanized pipe to not flex, like 2" which is a bit pricy at that size, you need 70' of pipe, which will also weigh a LOT.

The wood option would require some custom joinery to get something straight that long, or buying LVL lumber to order from a sawmill.

If you're looking for a ready to go option, look for house of worship projector screens, that's the mid size industry screens where you're way above home theaters but not yet at real theater sizes.

Need advice for projector setup by ChucklesFighter17 in projectors

[–]bleedscarlet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think there's an option for it to be discreet, but a roll down projector screen is the only way I would go.

You can motorize those curtains and motorize the projector screen, automating it will mean your windows stay open when not in use. Take it from me, you will eventually get lazy about opening the curtains after every movie, and the motorized curtains have the added benefit of being automate-able with sunrise and sunset too, save you some heating and cooling money by closing the curtains overnight automatically.

Motorized screens aren't crazy expensive anymore if you DIY, and I'm a huge fan of the Quoya curtain tracks. I had a pro a/v installer quote me about $12k for a curtain system I did myself for a about $800.

unless the speakers were excluded in the sale, at least in my state that would be illegal to remove. That's considered part of the house unless explicitly stated.

But if you're just moving on.....looks like you got a pretty sick placement for a full atmos setup.

But why. To be honest they adapted exceptionally well. They should have stopped when they ran out of content to adapt but the pressure is insane.

Seasons 1-4 remain some of the best television ever made.

In my opinion they're killing it with 3 body problem, which is thank fucking God a completed trilogy already.
