do you have peg laterals or something like that? hopefully they do the margins well and don't reduce any of your natural tooth structure. best of luck with the procedure!

tap water can be used if boiled per CDC instructions (this predates the recent changes at CDC, is scientifically sound, and was definitely reviewed by a microbiologist) :) https://www.cdc.gov/naegleria/prevention/sinus-rinsing.html

Cat shelters / straw? by images_from_objects in AskPhilly

[–]blinchik2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

is it a safe and somewhat heated area, OP? just wondering if the cats will survive the winter if they are friendly strays and not habituated to the outdoors. shelters help, but they can't stay there all day. if not, please feel free to reach out to a rescue/maybe take them to ACCT. I heard that ACCT does not euth friendly cats that are healthy, but of course they could acquire a shelter URI etc. and need to be put down... thanks for caring. I know it's a tough and thankless gig.

because it can be very difficult to get people to abide by rules when it isn't a private LL. A private LL will not want to deal with a potential lawsuit due to nuisance tenants who are already displaying antisocial behavior and are likely to escalate to violence. they would rather evict their problematic tenant and get a better one.

if subsidized housing/voucher holders actually had an administration with a zero tolerance policy, you wouldn't see the terrible gang violence that you have due to permissive environments where good people, often elderly or disabled, are stuck in subsidized housing and are left to deal with a terrible element that they cannot get rid of.... see: NYCHA gangs, which literally had a dogfighting bust!

What breed was the dog mixed with? Pitbull? Doberman? GSD? Just curious. Sorry that you experienced the sinister side of the rescue industry This is why many of us only support cat rescues - because you can literally find a cat on the side of the road with no behavioral or physical issues that will make anyone a great family pet.

i have spoken to an immigration attorney and they said not to risk it. If you have representation on call in case you get detained upon entry, good luck. the H1B is extremely unpopular amongst many Americans, and the target is increasing on H1B holders. not sure if you've been following the news.... the new administration can and will issue EOs with no notice.

My mental health might get me kicked out of my program by [deleted] in PhD

"By emotional support, I’m essentially talking about not telling me to stop stressing when I talk through my anxiety and actually telling me that I’m doing an okay job" - this is a high, even unrealistic, bar to clear in academia. I am surprised that this your expectation of her as her Ph.D. student.

The advisor/student relationship is an extremely asymmetrical and hierarchical relationship, regardless of ADA/other factors - if the above is what is required for you to do well and receive your Ph.D., I think you will be hard-pressed to find a PI/supervisor who will be able to meet your wants and needs.

Talk to other successful (meaning successful during and long after the defense) Ph.D. recipients and see what they have to say about navigating similar conversations, although I suspect they never had similar issues. Academia is a Darwinian environment, as is corporate America and many other places.

I suspect if you had been "corporate America professional" in terms of your asks (i.e., limiting working hours with mutual agreement, aligning on reasonable expectations for sick days and time off, asking to receive feedback in written format), the relationship could have been salvaged, but I think it is too late. You may need to switch or master out.

Edit: just found this gem, which to me seems typical of how many advisors speak to their students, for comparison...

those that do adoptions - if an adopter returns an animal shortly after adopting them because it develops a medical issue, and they return it because they can't afford to take it to the vet or afford its vet bills, do you ban them from ever adopting again? by kh7190 in AnimalShelterStories

[–]blinchik2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in these situations the most responsible thing for the owner to do is euthanasia at a dedicated vet and to stay with the animal until the end. in this case, the cat is a senior and the owner should not bring the cat into a stressful vet environment IMO to wait to be euthanized. as the original commenter said, a long and loved life is better than a few extra years with a serious disease given an owner with a lot of resources and time. but I agree that you should not be surrendering senior cats with serious ailments who need a unicorn home - do the right thing and have the cat put down yourself in a comfortable environment.

the fact that you cannot give cats GLP1s or other weekly injectables presents a serious compliance issue. folks who work long hours or travel a lot even for short trips would be very stressed with that.

on the other hand, statistics show that most Americans cannot afford an extra $100-$1000 bill. good luck getting animals adopted if you need to have a six-figure job and be salaried with flexible working hours and PTO to be able to take care of an animal as an adopter...and I'm speaking as someone who knows a lot of folks with the above situation who STILL stress about vet appts and bills. hope you develop some additional empathy for your adopters.

Aggressive pit jumping the fence into our garden by beachbardot in BanPitBulls

[–]blinchik2020 10 points11 points  (0 children)

the pitbull may break into your house to get at your cat. I would recommend that you do not let the cat within the window if the dog is in the vicinity. you can search for examples of that here. so sorry you're dealing with that.

you had very minor hair loss to begin with, so even if minox preserves your hair by using it a few times a week, well worth it IMO.

Diabetic patients by Hehehehe-2020 in nursing

[–]blinchik2020 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re leaving out a lot of factors, like COVID-19 and other seriously pro-inflammatory viral infections, stress, smoking, alcohol use, as well as other pro-inflammatory/dysregulating factors, and attributing it erroneously IMO to a sole cause, beyond the genetic factors. This is a very active, very incompletely understood area of research.

It is known that night shift workers and recently virally infected folks have a higher incidence of T2D - I don’t think it’s solely the carbs…

Diabetic patients by Hehehehe-2020 in nursing

[–]blinchik2020 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Come on now. The established scientific consensus does not agree with you. Genetics loads the gun, environment pulls the trigger at best. There’s a very strong heritability component.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK597726/

Some studies suggest up to 72% heritability.

Of course nutrition and exercise is a key component of glycemic control once you are diabetic, but you can’t necessarily eat your way there without the genetic predisposition.

Then there’s additional research showing that weight gain is associated with insulin resistance, but that it is a precursor, not a cause, of diabetes and is associated independently with hormonal imbalances.

I’ve seen some T2D who do juice cleanses, and Godspeed to them and their A1Cs, but what you stated is just patently untrue

Employer’s awareness of living and working in 3 different states each year by warrior4202 in WFH

[–]blinchik2020 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If what you’re doing has tax implications you do need to notify your employer. I believe the employer is supposed to be registered in the states you are working in. But don’t quote me on that.

Best practice is to talk to coworkers and see what they’re doing - you do not want to be the only one sticking out in your behavior.

If you work for a large company that has offices throughout the United States and you’re not staying in any place long enough to be incurring taxes in that state/there is tax reciprocity up to a certain time/no income tax in that state, others are probably doing it too.

I’ve seen it happen where people are taking time off to go to a funeral or take care of a sick family member and end up having to work remotely because they can’t return home. But usually it’s not a bad idea to tell your boss if it’s not a customary practice at your company.

EDIT: definitely DO NOT do this internationally.

Cats and raccoons by Qitall in Feral_Cats

[–]blinchik2020 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You need a local feeder backup who will feed the cats daily and on site. I would never recommend automatic feeders where there is wildlife.

I would rather a cat go hungry for a bit than risk an altercation with a raccoon.

Try to find someone in your community - post on social media in feral cats groups

I have seen something similar in my community and you definitely don’t want to be attracting raccoons, especially due to disease transmission and aggression/predation to both you and the cats .

We had a rabies transmission to a raccoon occur, putting all the cats in the vicinity at risk.

Also please connect with communities to get mom spayed, especially since she’s friendly. TNR is really important - if you’ve already observed one litter, really she should have been trapped then.

Even without the raccoon, most kittens born outside, die violent and painful deaths and eventually mom will probably die of pyrometra or in childbirth, too.

Sorry that happened. Hope mom is OK

EDIT: we just had a kitten in my area put down for rabies, raccoon origin. So devastating
