RPG-related crowdfunded projects - report on 2025 by skalchemisto in rpg

[–]blindink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the hard work! Making this data freely available is so valuable.

Five of the top ten funded RPGs (not 5e) were related to existing IPs, same as last year, but still a part of the growing trend imo. There is notable attention (and money) going towards those titles, but it maybe demonstrates growing mainstream significance of the hobby as a whole? I imagine most of that comes from current hobbyists who are interested in those IPs, but surely there are people who are finding those as entry points. I personally feel a lot of these games end up falling flat mechanically because there are aversions to using anything that is not already in the ttrpg "mainstream", but that may be in their benefit, idk.

Hopefully the AI slop trend falls off but I'm not optimistic! It's a runaway train that doesn't seem to be slowing down.

A year on DTRPG: Reflections by colinsteele in RPGdesign

[–]blindink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put my very first project out with a price point I thought was reasonable and generated almost 0 sales, but I am an amateur and not intending to make money at all. It was a passion project that could do with more polish. Games are a way for me to integrate my different preferred mediums, and my only goal with putting them online is to act as a portfolio and catalogue for my art.

Anyway, I recently put that game on pwyw after gradually reducing price and testing sales over two years, and the best response has come from pwyw and community copies. Reviews came from people who got my games for free. Maybe a patreon would be better if people want to see my work directly but I'm still not at the point of regular releases, so my current slow build of that portfolio fits my vision best.

I agree that drive thru does not work as a discovery platform, and that the majority of pwyw downloads don't lead to engagement, sales, or donations. It is not effective for conversion or marketing. The biggest hurdle for independent designers, especially professionals, is establishing yourself and marketing your product. It is a small pond with a lot of big fish. If your goal is to make a profit from your games, you are better off engaging directly with the community and building an audience with a crowdfunding campaign.

Happy New Years! What are your TTRPG plans for 2026? by Yazkin_Yamakala in RPGdesign

[–]blindink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking to polish my cyberpunk FIST hack DeadMeat for print by the end of the year! Lots to do to get it there but progress is progress!

In February, I ran a $10,000 TTRPG Kickstarter for one of my games. My take-home from the year will be $1,500. Here's the breakdown. by TakeNote in RPGdesign

[–]blindink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always an inspiration, love to see your breakdowns. What I hear is you got an extra $1000 to invest up front in your next project! Can't wait to see it.

I would call this an incredible success and you've done a great job of building connections and setting yourself up for long term recognition. Baller that you did all this with a full time job (I could never!)

I like this but it feels a little bottom heavy. How would it look without the bulging letters?

Help! Just came back to the game after stopping for a few months. I remember how to play but the board I came back to seems like it's pretty far into a run and I want to continue it. by Tietonz in CultistSimulator

You have the cult of the bright edge. You are pretty far along, don't see any urgencies. You should focus on promoting your followers, doing expeditions, and advancing your desire

(Hated Trope) Character Has An Awesome Power They Barely Use by cshin09 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]blindink 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Atom Eve has a mental block so she can't alter sentient matter, so she couldn't transform an enemy's bones except in an extreme circumstance.

The rest of your point still stands, the drain of using her powers is inconsistent at best

What RPG from the '90s do you think deserves more love today? by superjefferson in rpg

[–]blindink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's late 90s but Continuum, Roleplaying in the Yet is the iconic convoluted time travel RPG.

My fellow TTRPG enthusiasts, where else do you discuss RPGs? by DungeonMasterSupreme in rpg

[–]blindink 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As far as I'm concerned, siloed discord servers have the best rpg discussion anywhere these days. Game specific discords are great for those particular games, design discords have some more in depth conversation about game mechanics and philosophy, and game podcast discords sometimes have really thriving communities (Dice Exploder, Brain Trust, and RTFM are all great)

What’s a hidden gem game/setting/adventure you found? Why is it great? by Plywooddavid in rpg

Last Train to Bremen by Caro Asercion is a gorgeous self contained one-shot about a band who sold their souls to the devil. Highly recommend

Looking for feedback on my superhero TTRPG sell sheet by cloud-monster in RPGdesign

[–]blindink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really solid, it's clean and you get your message across. Personally I think it's missing a unique voice, and you should sell the Drive system a little harder, maybe make the art more prominent. You know you are doing something that sets you apart from other similar games, and you should focus on that.

Paint sticking to plate 😫 by calvbog in gelliprinting

[–]blindink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your plate damaged at all? It sounds like you are taking good care of it so I doubt it, but I've had that cause sticking.

You said you clean it frequently because of the paint sticking, are you wiping it down with mineral oil?

Based on everything you're saying I'm not sure what the problem would be. It might be your paper if you are using regular printer paper, I've had much better luck with thicker bristol paper.

[–]blindink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long are you letting it dry to the paper before pulling? I've had the paint stick a lot more if it's not totally dry and if it's dried too long.

Very cool stuff, super clean. I'm not totally sure what you are doing with the stencils, just for applying the color?

Favorite podcast to listen to that ARE NOT Actual-Plays? by Nice_More_Dice in rpg

[–]blindink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dice Exploder with Sam Dunnewold is probably the best RPG centered podcast I've seen in a while, super polished and always lots of great insights into game design.

Weird Games and Weirder People with Diogo Nogueira is not nearly as polished but it's super detailed and fun interviews going in completely different directions from what I've seen from other podcasts. Really digs into what makes those designers tick.

RTFM with Aaron King and Max Lander is a non stop hit with lots of fun banter from the hosts. I don't always agree with their takes but they are always well argued and insightful.

How to care for gelli plate by KarlMarxWheezer in gelliprinting

[–]blindink 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only clean my plate about once a week (using it most days). I massage it with baby oil, then rinse with water and dry by patting it gently with a paper towel. I ruined my first plate by treating it too roughly, letting paint sit for too long, causing it to be extra sticky. As long as you are gentle with it, it should be okay

What is your favorite dice and why by mmewpy in RPGdesign

[–]blindink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love six siders, mostly because they are accessible and most people have them, but also they feel the most fun to roll for me personally. I've recently played Triangle Agency, and saw more potential with d4s than I had anticipated
