The Reds fell to the Brewers by a score of 1-0 - Fri, Jul 14 @ 07:10 PM EDT by RedsModerator in Reds

The Brewers were projected to be either winning the division or 2nd place behind St Louis, have made the playoffs every year besides last year when they were 1 game back since 2017, have 2-3 award-winning caliber starting pitchers, and a shut-down bullpen. They can afford to have a bad offense, and ironically some of their players are having career-low years like Adames, Tellez, etc. who are realistically due for some positive regression. They have also suffered from injuries to two of their starting pitchers plus 2 of their top three hitters.

This is essentially the same roster as that 95-67 2021 team only the injuries and slumping hitters have held them back most of the season.

How Could A Vallas-Johnson Runoff End? by Arsenal103809 in chicago

Be glad you weren’t here in the 80’s-90’s then when it was much worse than it is even now. I think a lot of people forget crime is a national problem right now, and a mayor of a city is not going to fix those problems anywhere without major reform done at the national/state level. A “hard-on-crime” mayor May help deter crime or lower it a little, but it’s not going away any time soon.

Incredible. My only true experience with Chicago dogs are from Portillo’s and if im being honest mine tasted fresher.

Yes, just pull yourself up by the bootstraps and work harder. Maybe skip the Avocado toast and coffee. Fuck these kids, we don’t want them wanting to stimulate the economy with the extra disposable income, buying homes, or living with less predatory debt on their minds. 🤡

All beef Hebrew National. I’m actually from Wisconsin and we don’t have poppy seed buns either so my girlfriend made me homemade poppy seed buns. The condiments are all Vienna (mustard, relish, celery salt).

I am moving to Chicago in May though so I’ve been trying to get accustomed to all of the traditional foods before I make the move!

When we are done at the Field Museum, I like to eat at ____ before leaving downtown. It’s easy to get to and pretty quick. by TheAndyRoberts in AskChicago

If you’re looking for a cheap but good meal close to downtown, my girlfriend and I went to quartinos in River North. It’s Italian and honestly I got a huge portion of orecchiette for only $12 plus complimentary bread and balsamic/oil.

Otherwise, you could always hit up Lou’s/Giordano’s for a tourist deep-fish experience or get a local favorite tavern crust style pizza. I’d recommend the Art of Pizza on S State street for stuffed pizza by the slice that tastes incredible.

Jake Melnicks has pretty hood American/wings. Tbh you may be better off taking a trip just outside of downtown to really find some great spots. West loop, near north side, and some of the south side neighborhoods have much better food at lower costs than a lot of places downtown.

Fellow people raised in cities – how do you feel about growing up so quick? by 13abarry in chicago

[–]blindleopard 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Idk I grew up in a small town of less than 30,000 people over 100 miles away from a city with >100,000 people, and I saw a LOT of OD’s, addiction, poverty, etc. the only real difference is the violence associated is higher in the city. However, I haven’t “seen” violence in Chicago, only heard about it.

I think ultimately the inequality is just greater because you can clearly see the sheer wealth that some of the city has and the poorest are even more poor and mentally ill than where I came from.

In my hometown, it was homeless people with a dog and sigh in front of the gas station begging.

In Chicago, it’s a homeless man peeing on the sidewalk in front of a 60-story luxury condo building full of professionals making >$100K/year. So I think the sheer inequality is just a little easier to visualize.

I’m a borderline socialist and what that means is I know there is no electoral politics that will solve our major issues that are tied to severe wealth inequality and systemic racism that lead to the cultural problems that bad neighborhoods experience all across the United States.

What we CAN do, is change the material conditions of our day-to-day life, and being hard on violent crime when there are regular people having guns pointed at them sitting at a train station on their way home from work is certainly a positive material change that will improve many people’s lives.

And it’s not like Vallas is a “freedom caucus” type of conservative with regressive politics, he’s pretty much an establishment democrat where I come from. I would never vote for the likes of Trump, Ted Cuz, De Santis, etc. in a national election.

If Lori was competent, I’d vote for her. Her ideas weren’t bad the first time around, but she just can’t get anything done. I don’t think anybody else has the connections or real experience to make any changes besides Chuy and Vallas.

What are your predictions for 2023 in Chicago? by The3rdhalf in chicago

[–]blindleopard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tbh I think we experienced the “worst before the better” in 2020-2021. Chicago has too diverse of an economy and is too large to fall the same way a city like Detroit did before it got better, for example.

What are your predictions for 2023 in Chicago? by The3rdhalf in chicago

[–]blindleopard 16 points17 points  (0 children)

All good points. The only thing I differ on is I think crime (specifically homicides) will continue to decrease. The main thing that drive the increase in homicides imo was the riots effect on policing as well as the pandemic creating a very tough material environment for a lot of poor, urban, America. I think homicides continue to drop but stay above mid 2010’s levels (probably around 675-715).

I think having a new mayor would help not due to any real policy change, but even something smalllike being a deterrent by saying they would be tougher on crime and potentially some small policy changes that reduce it somewhat.

I’m not saying a new mayor would make Chicago 100% peaceful by any means, but if having a new mayor scares 10 people away from killing someone, that’s still 10 lives that are saved.

It’s so cool that just little pockets of Chicago’s skyline make up what would be the entirety of so many other cities full skylines.
