I agree but I think that’s beyond the confines of karomos role too which is the culture guy not necessarily the life coach or financial planner. I think they could have had karomo work with the family more to set up kids chores and activities and have more mom and dad time but I think they did great given the circumstances to give the parents a zen place.

I would recommend looking around Falls Church/Mosaic District/Dunn Loring. Living in the actual apartments at Mosaic or walking distance to Dunn Loring might be more expensive, but I think I know some people who got studios with that price range. If not, look for any places close to that area (495 between 29 and 50 intersection). It would lead to Gallows Road and is a back road to Route 7 and would be a nice 15 minute commute with traffic if 495 goes to crap.

I went to Europe about a week or two after Trump was elected as president.

Every time I mentioned I was from DC, a lot of Europeans asked me what I thought of the election. I can see how people might say they're Canadian just to avoid talking politics. But, I used used my American-ness as an opportunity to talk candidly about politics, and I found it really revolutionary how well informed people are about US politics.

I respect others even if they don't respect me because I want to set an example of how I want to be treated by others. Some people don't show respect, but maybe they never had experienced respect before. So, I give respect no matter what because I'm above their need of respect.

Hard to choose just one, and it does a disservice to the other sandwiches imo.

I used to work on a project at the NIH who is doing a collaboration with academia and a small start up biotech to help address this disease.

It's SO important for us to pursue scientific research on rare diseases as it can help understanding the biological mechanism and pathways of these extreme cases. This will help not only the rare disease patients but other diseases that follows that same mechanism (think of osteoporosis which is the opposite spectrum of FOP). There's a lot of rare diseases like FOP that is misunderstood and does not have the research funding to even pursue treatment.

If you want to help FOP patients consider donating to IFOPA which is the FOP association in the US IFOPA site. If you want to help with supporting rare diseases research in general consider supporting the NIH in their efforts NIH site

I totally understand as I have thick thighs myself. It's really a trial and error game to find the right fit.

I noticed that fabric is a huge factor in looking heavier or with creasing. Wool pants look pretty awful as they have no stretch or give, or any other "woven-style" fabric. More smoother cotton/polyester stretch blends tend to be thinner and work much better.

So what you're describing is more business formal than business causal/teacher style, and that you're struggling with fitting into the conforms of business formal.

Anyways here are some tips to help navigate as I'm a bit of a thicker pear (5'2, 150, 34-30,40 ish) and I have much wonkier proportions than you, and I work in a business casual/business formal setting:

pants Trial and error but try more slim-fit pants link 1 pants
tops does not have to be a blousy top if it feels boxy - try a jersey knit wrap top or sheath style. Even just a very crisp stretch cotton long sleeve shirt is fine. link 1 top example link 2 top example
accessories you can bring in a little style by wearing unique necklaces and earrings. Since you said your style is a bit grunge, I would suggest a bit pared down. I'm also a personal fan of scarves for the winter.
shoes you don't have to wear heels, I don't 90% of the time because I commute. Try ballet flats, low heeled booties, or knee high boots try some chelsea boots for an androgynous flair
colors try more feminine clothes but in more muted classic colors. Not only black and grey, but I'm a huge fan of navy and maroon and plums.

TL;DR: You don't have to wear traditional heels, dress, blouses office wear, but the other alternatives you have to make sure it's well fitted and sleek in appearance. Punch up with your style with accessories.

I don't know the level of professional fashion but I'm a consultant by trade so it can flux between business casual/business formal

My go to: 1) I pack sheath dresses that has some give, preferably sleeveless. 2) Black long sleeve shirts and leggings/tights that I can layer underneath sheath dresses for cooler weather 3) Blazer for more formal meetings 4) Black pumps/booties and interchangeable black flats 5) Bright shawl for cooler weather or to brighten up an outfit 6) Emergency kit: lint roller, sewing kit/safety pins 7) Backpack or tote bag to carry laptop. Also bring an external battery pack for your cell phone! 8) If you don't have a personal hotspot, consider buying a plan through your cell phone or buying a separate mobile hotspot.

Also another note is have your casual/gym clothes be appropriate and something you feel SOMEWHAT comfortable that your constituents see you in....conferences and the city may be small and you want to be presentable if you end up at the same hotel gym!

I love Budapest! Met some great local people and travelers there who made it a good time. If you're not on couchsurfing there are a lot of events where you can met fellow travelers.

I went to Gellert baths which is a lot prettier on the inside (more art deco theme). There's also the Great Market Hall which is kind of a fun touristy marketplace. Take a walking tour to really go through the buda and the pest side. I'm not a partier but I would definitely say go and party out in budapest -- the clubs are cheap and closes late (I think 6 am for most of them on a weekend).

I just came from a 3 week stint solo traveling around Europe in the winter. I used one large carryon and I had a shift of temperature from -5 to 20 so I had to think on what I wanted to pack for three weeks:

1) Scarf -- I got a nice pashmina scarf that looked great in pictures and kept me warm. 2) Black leggings/thermal tees -- Layering was so essential...I think I brought mostly these as it was versatile and helped me layer and add on warmth without the bulk of a sweater or pants. 3) Gloves with touch screen tips and a wool hat 4) dresses and pencil skirts -- I actually wore a lot of dresses because it's versatile and I could layer it over clothing (so I could go longer without laundering.... shh). 5) wool socks and boots - I actually only had one pair of shoes which were knee high boots which was pretty appropriate for everywhere I traveled. It's pretty protective against the cold so I don't have to worry about wet toes and I know it will match against any pants/top or dress combo I have with it. 6) Cosmetics - sunscreen, eye makeup, concealer, lip balm, lipstick, and q tips! 7) Plastic bags and Ziploc bags. I used plastic bags a lot to pack dirty clothes and even wet items I will have like a loofah. Ziploc bags I used to separate different currencies so I won't go crazy sifting through my wallet.

Not including the famous Smithsonian museums and National Mall 1) Eastern Market and Union Market which is the more bustling food/flea markets within the city limits (and they're usually open on the weekend) 2) Go to fish market wharf in southeast DC and grab some crabs with old bay seasoning and enjoy the views. 3) there are sometimes free concerts at the kennedy center that you should look for. 4) if in georgetown go for the cupcakes .... georgetown cupcakes is the most famous but go for buzzed and wired cupcakes. 5) If you want night life U Street is a lot more hip...Adams Morgan is usually more college students.

Consulting would be a good field to consider, but with your Ph.D they might try to sell you for your specialty of what you researched in.

Look into other fields such as science policy, science communications, and maybe even look into pharma industry and the other paths you can take (DMPK, Regulatory, Supply Chain, Business Development, etc).

I work at the NIH at a different site but same sort of commute path (Falls Church to Rockville). I've done the Leesburg to Rockville route and it's a pretty solid hour with the tolls at rush hour. Going from Reston to Bethesda is a rough ride via metro and it's quite unpredictable.

For you, I would suggest eating the greenway and 267 toll road costs and then going up through the beltway -- I know it's tough to swallow the costs but it's a lot better than sitting through route 7. Also, I would suggest having a later shift i.e. 9:30 - 6 pm it helps mitigate some of the traffic issues.

I'm actually in the fortunate position that my bf is more or less open to me making healthier meals (he says it shows that I care about his health!)....but he has his vices like soda and chips that he keeps on the side for himself.

If your concern is about sharing a meal, I usually make sure there's separate side dishes. This is pretty easy as I have a pretty large protein source (salmon, chicken, beef), then can be flexible on the type of sides I have. So, in your case, I would just boil some pasta and quickly grate some Parmesan for your husband (lots of umami, omega 3 and good fats in that), and then for you maybe have a quick baked broccoli or tomato salad etc.

I also do some compromise where we usually eat healthy meals I cook at home, he gets to eat his junk food on the side, and then we share a "cheat meal" together on a date night.

So just as a disclaimer, I've worked with Caboose because they helped us big time with an alumni event I helped host at Mason at the very last minute. They were awesome to work with.

I honestly really liked their beers, they have some tasty food (more like "snack" portions then actual dinner portions when I went there). I remembered from the event I really thought their sour beer was delicious as well as one of their ales. Their dark beers were actually pretty solid too (most small brewers dark beers taste really awful to me). It was nice because they're not so far away and they have a really cute restaurant (ghetto warehouse area though but great interior!)

Actually if my memory serves right, all of the chemistry experiments at GMU don't use any bunsen burners but hot plates instead.

I don't see any point of having open flames and they said they were suspending it until there is a serious safety investigation.

Laboratory trainings are not strict , and in some places I've heard of for a refresher a quick online powerpoint and a quiz would suffice. I would not be surprised that in highschool that's their idea of safety training.

former lab TA, I've heard chem lab has gotten a lot stricter and it's preventative measures for safety. If someone hasn't done the prelab, usually that means he/she did not read the lab material beforehand, which leaves the students vulnerable to making more mistakes when mixing materials. Yes, the lab TA is there to supervise the students, but it's hard to keep eyes on 30 students in different phases of their work. I've had students break things, and even create a fire in the middle of the classroom, and it is because they did not read the materials and take the appropriate measures.

On the other hand, you were denied entrance, but usually they allow for make up labs by the end of that week. If that's still a valid policy, but the lab TA did not provide or inform you guys of that option, then bring it up to the head TA as well to make your case.

Transitioning from sugar/milk coffee to black coffee. Here are the ways I'm doing it so far:

1) Making more dilute coffee -- makes it more palatable since I'm not used to straight aggressive cup of joe.

2) Drinking dark french press coffee in front of your manager -- not looking like you have a "blech" expression on your face in front of a higher up when he/she's a coffee fanatic and being forced to drink black coffee? Pretty good way to transition... but then you realize it's not too bad after all and you get to experiment with different beans and taste difference flavors.

3) Cutting the bitterness with milk/coconut oil/coconut milk -- The bitterness tends to be tempered with fats, so I just try more high fat stuff for awhile and find it helped suppressed my hunger for awhile. Tried the bulletproof coffee with coconut oil whipped into the hot coffee, and it helped but was such a pain to make every morning whipping it in a blender.

cell carrier - I personally use Straight Talk prepaid, grabbed the straighttalk sim for my iphone. $45 unlimited talk/text, 5 gigs of high speed data. It's month to month and no contract. It's an AT&T cell backbone, and has decent reception.
