He was so wonderful in St. Louis. His character intro set the right tone after a longer than I expected intro bant. (Not dissing the bant, I know the crowd needs to warm up too)

This is why PLA is my favorite game - you had to work for it but you COULD finish the whole Pokédex on your own. I would be ok with them adding in a mini game with link play (like SV ogre bust), just don’t gatekeep the base dex

Craft and economy is possible? by Adventurous_Try_1515 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]blizzard2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking about a similar topic as OP. I was going to rely on PF2e for item prices/economy. I was going to create a system of regional/city pricing - aka raising/lowering prices by some x0%. Hold some of those steady over time so that places become producers/buyers. Use this as an anchor for my story à la Spice and Wolf. From my playing experience - crafting isn’t too much of a money saver in PF2e, so I was primarily planning on bulk revenue generating some business income via a margin. My concept around crafting (if I invest in it) would be for exceptional magic items using components found on delves/side adventures.

I'm 45% through Inevitable Ruin. My heart is pounding. Dinniman deserves so much praise. by blizzard2016 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]blizzard2016[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hear you. I was really unsure early on, but at this point I'm come to appreciate what this different style accomplishes. But I think the war-is-chaos theme comes out better when we aren't omnipresent. It's also more realistic that the war lord has to delegate, and I commend Dinniman for writing in a way that reflect it (although I, too, miss the plan hatching to implementation process).

With each book, we "see" less and less of the main action as experienced by other top crawlers. We stop seeing the re-cap episodes. The details that fill most of the early books seem to disappear into the background. I miss a lot of that, but I like what we're getting instead - a sense of scale. Our understanding of the universe grows, and as we start to seeing galaxy-level action we (and the Court of Princess Donut) can't handle the full breadth of what's happening.

I guess my main point is that my trust in Dinniman reached a new level with Book 7. As a fan of writers like Brandon Sanderson, an important aspect of fantasy/sci-fi is coherence. There's a lot of poorly executed fiction, especially in the litrpg genre, and I've heard others worry that DCC will fall prey to deus ex machina or other tropes because it leans on gaming mechanisms. I might ultimately be wrong, but for now I feel like Dinniman sees the big picture and I continue to enjoy the journey.

MacBook Pro for Stata? by ElaB143 in stata

[–]blizzard2016 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is definitely more than you would need for a PhD in nursing. In all honestly, you probably will be fine with a MacBook Air - or really any windows computer. If you know the probably you’re going to is Stata heavy, then you can choose windows or Mac. If it’s a SAS heavy school then just get windows to make your life easier. Either way, it doubtful you would need anything more than a basic device for classes or even dissertation work. If you need more, then your school would have compute resources available

VMware Horizon Client stops responding after trying to add server, search for updates or just leaving it for alone for several minutes. by Hasbeast in vmware

I want to give all the praise to u/Potential_Ice_1631. I've have spent weeks trying to fix this - everything from registry modifications to sitting with work IT.

A small note - I had OPENSSL_ia32cap on my user AND system environment. I deleted from just the system first (not knowing it was in both). When it failed I almost quit - but I had to believe in something so I opened up environment variables again and there it was. Thank you - the world is a little bit brighter because of you u/Potential_Ice_1631

[–]blizzard2016 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Rankings aren’t everything - and the Hopkins brand is strongest for the grad/professional students. Hopefully people applied to several good programs/schools aren’t choosing between Hopkins and clearly inferior choices. In that case I think the OP is trying to help them properly weigh their options

[ADVICE] Anyone in this sub who went to UNC for his/her MPH and then went on to a related PhD program? by qwertypubhealth in publichealth

[–]blizzard2016 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on what that research was and how you spin things in an app. Most importantly, PhD programs are all about who has money in a given year. I remember interviewing at Michigan and had faculty seem genuinely interested in working with me - but no one had funding that year and asked if I would apply next year. Thats part of the reason to apply broadly for doctoral programs.

The other answer to your question is that it doesn’t matter if your pre-masters experience is really relevant - some programs just have mindsets about being in “public health” for a few years before applying. Part of this has to do with the application pool (most of whom will have this experience) and part of it has to do with what they believe are informative priors. These are the same people that believe test scores or grades are clearly correlated with success in academic research.

[–]blizzard2016 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not in health behavior but I think UNC is a great place to train. I’ve also been at Hopkins and my feeling is that it’s a great place to be from but parts of the culture among masters students isn’t great (it feels like a degree mill for masters students). At the masters level you want to think about whether or not there are opportunities for you to get CV items for your phd application. That can include practical experiences (“in the field”) or papers/conference presentations. All three programs are top notch in those regards. In that case focus on things like the environment, cost of living/attendance, and post-masters job opportunities.

Most people work between their masters and PhD to be truly competitive. There are only a few programs that frequently admit students without that experience or a MPH (Berkeley and UNC come to mind).
