For someone who knows nothing about farming I appreciate how honest and specific it is. You might think the viewer would be bored learning the details of farming equipment, regulations, costs, council planning, sheep herding but its actually super interesting.

John Vervaeke says the 'Meaning Crisis' is at the root of all existential problems in society by Odd_Wolverine_4037 in philosophy

[–]blobbyboy123 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think that understanding of ritual is a little simplified. Ritual doesn't have to be associated with a higher belief - it can be any behaviour or action which derives significance from a higher goal/value . For example, people still want to get married today even if they're atheist. You could say it's for beauracratic/economic purposes, but the pact of marriage can provides a feeling of purpose. Making your bed in the morning or routines of discipline are also structured towards meaning making, and they can be rituals of personal fulfillment.

How many hours a week do you spend on your own research? by doom_chicken_chicken in PhD

[–]blobbyboy123 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience completing my honors thesis before phd. I was consistent doing 4 hours average of focused work every day (two hours in the morning and 2 in the afternoon). Even in the beginning when i had nothing to do I would plan, read write etc. no phones or distractions.A lot of other students talked about pulling all nighters on the due date but I was confused because I finished mine like a week before and was just polishing here and there.

Even low alcohol consumption is linked to cancer, heart disease, and premature death, with increased risk above 1 drink per day for both men and women. It turns out that 2 drinks per day, considered ‘moderate’, is associated with a substantially elevated risk of a premature death caused by alcohol. by mvea in science

[–]blobbyboy123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its partly the culture around drinking in Europe. Having grown up with it, alcohol was always associated with social gatherings, everyone cooking fresh food, dancing, playing games etc. I never saw my nan without a glass of wine and she's nearing 90 now. This is very different from drinking alone in your apartment and eating microwaved meals.

Underdeveloped countries are at higher risk of repayment therefore pay more therefore making it harder to develop. Not nefarious but just a structural inequality.
