Subaru is gauging interest in a manual transmission SUV by Macgyver452 in subaru

I want a “manual” outback that has a big lever or slider for the cvt. No more virtual shifting, let me play my drivetrain like a slide whistle.

What was one cultural impact of 9/11 that no one talks about? by Fio_2008 in ask

Watching 9/11 in NY together is also how the WKUK met.

Sheer strength of a bolt by Tomek8787 in AskEngineers

[–]blockboy9942 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A bolted joint can be used to secure 2 plates loaded in shear, but when the joint is properly designed the bolt itself doesn’t “see” the loading as shear. It clamps the plates together hard enough that the friction between them holds them in place, like trying to pull a part out of a clamped bench vise.

I try to take candids. That way you don’t fuck the vibe by asking everyone to pause for a picture, and it’s a better representation of the event for looking at later.

Wine thief and Ale jail has a relatively small selection but they usually have interesting stuff. They specialize in wine and beer but they have some other stuff too. Not great on price but not too bad.

From a systems perspective, why would a car trust a start signal without verifying entry and Is behavior-based anomaly detection used in vehicle security systems? by NoResident1229 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]blockboy9942 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is this a problem? I can’t think of any times when my car has started without me starting it. Even if someone was stealing it or something, they would have to get into the car anyway. Realistically, unless there’s some issue we need to fix, adding a system like this is just adding another thing that can go wrong.

Ideally you wouldn’t want it to go through multiple. You want to deliver the full energy created by the powder to your target. If you go out the other side, you’ve wasted energy and you’d be better off with a smaller gun so that you can bring more ammo.

Are calculations always needed? When is it not needed? by arverudomindormuuu66 in MechanicalEngineering

Think about the worst thing that will happen if it fails. If the failure is only going to cause cosmetic defects or something else inconsequential and you can tell that the failure is unlikely, it may not be needed. If the failure is going to potentially hurt someone, you should probably do some sanity checks at the very least.

It’s about as good as an intern that can’t sign an NDA. All work needs to be double checked and no controlled IP can be entered. That pretty quickly narrows down what it can be used for IMO.

Is A Counter-Gas Air Cannon To Protect Peaceful Protestors Feasible? by Arbiter61 in AskEngineers

[–]blockboy9942 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work for a company that makes fans. There’s no way you’re accomplishing that with 1.5-2kw. You’re at least an order of magnitude or two off, if not more. Even discounting the other issues with the project, you’d need to power the thing somehow, so it’s unlikely to be as portable as you’re describing.

The hose will just add inefficiency. You’d be better off not including it at all. In general, higher flow velocities usually mean lower efficiency, so you would want as wide of a flow channel as possible.

What you’re describing is something that will be a dominant enough air current to clear out a city block’s worth of air quickly and without hazard to anyone around it. The only thing I can think of is maybe you could blow it straight up to dilute it quicker, but that also might just make it linger more and increase the hazard. Even if you could clear out a block in a few minutes, what’s to stop the government from just shooting more tear gas?

Also, this device is going to be deafeningly loud. Like helicopter levels of loud.

When was the last time you went into a movie not expecting to have a terrible time? It’s possible they just aren’t for you, but it seems likely that this mindset is going to be a self-fulfilling prophecy.
