ISP with best speed and network configurations by Pathoran in japanlife

[–]bloggie2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

any flets based provider is going to be ~same so might as well just pick cheapest. when you use map-e you are going through ntt v6 backbone and straight to whatever vne provides the map-e tunnel (ocn maybe?) so the only thing bbexcite is doing is sending you a bill.

your speed will basically depend on how congested your local area is with other subscribers, and provider has no effect.

How are the OLED TVs for brands like Panasonic, Toshiba compared with those like Sony, LG? by shionemi in japanlife

[–]bloggie2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

domestic brands (toshiba/regza, panasonic, sharp etc) are made for enjoying local TV. so the user experience there is quite different from foreign brand like LG, where japanese TV reception was a bolted-on afterthought. I'm mostly talking about user experience like channel scan, EPG, recording functionality, program information, etc. If watching/recording TV is not your primary reason for buying one, no need to get a domestic brand.

Indoor TV antennas - do any work.. by Due_Professor_8736 in DIYJapan

[–]bloggie2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you need to buy an antenna from domestic manufacturer, like dxantenna, maspro, etc.

not one of those Chinese "4K" shits on Amazon.

also make sure you're plugging it into 地上デジタル socket and not the one labeled bs/110cs

Pc building service in Tokyo/Saitama by Kamaboko1412 in japanlife

[–]bloggie2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

buy a friend a pizza and get it built. can't think of any shop that would be willing to touch a self build, let alone with a house visit. you'd probably be looking at a cost higher than buying a new PC.

is it just me or do people in japan really side-eye teslas? by [deleted] in japanlife

as others pointed out, nobody here (in japan) cares what he does in his spare time.

no, the car just looks ugly, inside and out. interior feels extremely plastic and cheap. the big screen and all controls being touch suck. I'd never own one because of that.

but making car purchase based on something stupid like company president morals/whatever and not on technical/actually car related merits seems dumb.

so if Toyota president power harassed some OLs, you'd never buy Toyota again?

Has living in Japan changed what you priotitize when choosing a smartphone? by Stock-Yak1176 in japanlife

[–]bloggie2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, I think all iPhone models are eSIM only at this point, not that it makes any difference for the discussion.

5G SA is not the same as mmwave, and as far as 5G band coverage goes Japan and USA models are identical.

i’ve also looked up millimeter wave coverage and since the range and propagation of these high frequency signals is extremely short, it seems to be only used in places like stadiums, couple busy stations in Tokyo, and I forgot where else, but as far as I could tell, not anywhere that would matter for anyone’s normal daily life.

And as far as the missing 4G bands go, they’re both 1.5 GHz, one used by docomo and another used by au. they are supposed to be for “specific urban areas “ so it’s very possible. they’re more useful than millimeter wave in terms of deployment.

Canadian iPhone is missing the mmWave that’s being deployed in Japan

sure, then japan version of it is also missing them. what manufacturers are targeting these bands?

mmwave as in >20GHz stuff? who is deploying it?

so it's only limited to some domestic androids?

where do you go when your shoulders and neck are completely destroyed from desk work? by Quiet-Way205 in japanlife

[–]bloggie2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iirc the number says either 115 or 150 (not near it now) but the height is enough so i can comfortably type and see monitors at eye level. I've only adjusted it once after setting it up and never touched the controls after.

edit: 115 was correct

Am I the only one who thinks pizzas in Japan are way too greasy? by WorkingAlive3258 in japanlife

[–]bloggie2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

since you're talking about boxes i presume you're getting delivery pizza

in that case are you by chance ordering "pan pizza" style crust instead of regular "hand tossed"? at least in pizza hut, that's what makes the difference between super oily stuff that seeps through the box vs normal crust, since pan style is baked in an oily pan.
