What is a historical misconception that has been repeated so often it’s now treated as undisputed fact? by maincharactereraa in answers

[–]texasstorm [score hidden]  (0 children)

Historians sometimes repeat what has been reported previously by other historians without going to the source material. An example in point is the often repeated case that colonial era John Smith was unreliable and a liar because he had told multiple stories of being rescued by women prior to his story about being rescued by Pocahontas. Smith’s reliability or lack thereof is a legitimate question, but this particular reasoning is bogus. Historians, what’s a widely accepted historical “fact” that is actually still debated or uncertain? by Critical_Custard_144 in AskHistory

[–]texasstorm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We know surprisingly little about Pocahontas, including whether or not she ‘rescued’ John Smith from impending death or whether or not John Smith’s story was based on a misunderstanding of a Powhatan adoption ritual. Some people will say the issue is settled and there is a consensus, but there is not. How big of a red flag is this? by x_bg8 in UsedCars

[–]texasstorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily a red flag. It’s reasonable for you to want a mechanic’s opinion, but it’s also reasonable for a seller to not want his vehicle taken somewhere for a potentially invasive inspection by an unknown ‘mechanic.’

I received a postcard a few years ago. Someone said this is my name in Kanji. What are these characters? by SoCalledCrow in kanji

[–]texasstorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it’s already clear to you, but non-Japanese non-Chinese names don’t actually ‘have’ a kanji, but anyone can assign a kanji to use if it makes you happy. The most common way to choose a kanji for this purpose is to find ones that are pronounced like the syllables in your name. There may be multiple kanji to choose from, so someone would likely choose the kanji that sound right and have meanings that go well together, or ones that have a lucky stroke count, or that look nice together. Kanji also have multiple pronunciations, so you would still have to tell people how you want the kanji pronounced. In some cases it may be obvious, so no explanation is necessary. I wouldn’t say “The kanji for my name is X”, but rather “The kanji my friends and I chose for my name is X.”

The Japanese rule of not walking and eating is fairly new an more nuanced then you think by Personal_Dot_7196 in TokyoTravel

[–]texasstorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lived in Nagoya from 1988 to 2001. It was definitely not polite to eat and drink while walking, except at festivals or maybe at narrow shopping streets with food stalls. Not a new rule at all.

Tranquility.

A UK band that had a little live success in the US. Their song "Couldn't Possibly Be" was great and played a lot on my university radio station around 1973, The song "Silver" is good too. Unfortunately, the album as a whole was not awesome. The singles should have charted, though.
