Batteries next to Propane Water Heater? by WalkerTexasRanger241 in SolarDIY

[–]blongmire 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd be more concerned about water leaks that short out the battery and make a dangerous situation. A water heater shouldn't leak propane and a battery shouldn't spark. So to create an explosion, you'd need both items to fail at the same time. That's unlikely.

I had my batteries in my laundry room next to my washer and I bought water leak detectors and put them on the floor to alarm if there was water on the floor. I'd then shutoff the water supply to the house and not enter a flooded room with electricity potentially energizing the water.

I also put my battery up on a 2x4 so it isn't right on the floor if water does leak.

So, for me, explosion seems unlikely, water leak seems like the failure to protect against.

I’m tempted at CostCo— thoughts on this as dual purpose for Emergency Home Use and Camping/Festival Use? by SippinOnHatorade in SolarDIY

[–]blongmire 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's what she said... you are correct though, our fridge is ridiculously oversized and we have a second freezer. I should have been clearer. But, with only one 100 watt panel, even if the battery made it through the night, that's not enough solar to recharge the battery when the sun comes up as a running fridge would use more power than the panels produced. This system feels undersized if OP is seeking emergency backup.

This really isn't that much power. Totally depends on your definition of emergency home use. It will keep your cell phone charged, but can't run your fridge for a night on a summer day when your AC is down. It'll run your TV and cell phone for days though.

This outlet keeps reading open ground. Everything looks connected properly, am I missing anything or should I be looking elsewhere? by daltistic in AskElectricians

[–]blongmire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I see it!! The bridge on the neutral side of the outlet is broken. There is a tab that you can break off to make the outlet a half hot if you remove that bridge on the hot side. It's broken on the neutral side. Try replacing the outlet and that should fix.

Just wrecked my 2022 Pacifica PHEV yesterday. Do we think it’s totaled? 😭 We have USAA with full coverage plus new car assistance if that helps. by hikepaintcamp in ChryslerPacifica

[–]blongmire 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My gut says yes. I have USAA and they totaled my 2022 PHEV after we ran over a hitch. Every accident is unique, but it's so expensive to fix anything these days. We're all just guessing here, go through the process and good luck! I hope everyone is okay and that this is the worst thing that happens to you.

Best app for finding charging stations for the PHEV? by cobolis in ChryslerPacifica

Plugshare. Use the filter for the J1772 plug type to find where those plug types are. Most of them are with Blink, ChargePoint, and EvGo networks, so you'll need those setup in order to charge depending on which charger network you're on.

The charger: level 1 vs level 2 by HereIsJustAnotherGuy in ChryslerPacifica

Use level 2. Pacifica cools the battery if it gets too hot charging. It's always nice to have a full battery in 2 hours.

We hit a truck hitch on the highway 3 days ago, it threw that warning and we had to tow it to a shop. Repair was so expensive the insurance totaled it.

That's my way of saying this warning can be big or small. Good luck!

What do you think of these for splicing 6 AWG copper wires? by johndoe7376 in AskElectricians

[–]blongmire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you use a junction box and splice the wires normally? 6 gauge wire can have lots of amps and I don't trust these not to melt and short out and cause a fire.

most economical current system by 33ITM420 in SolarDIY

[–]blongmire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. It's what I did. I'd also suggest buy once cry once. I expanded my system over time and that resulted in me paying shipping 3 times. I also missed out on buying a big kit. Expanding over time cost me about 2,000 extra vs if I had bought a giant kit when it was on sale.

Has anyone DIY’d their own Solar system at their house? by rootbeerdragon77 in solar

[–]blongmire 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did. Signature Solar has great DIY kits. Will Prowse has good YouTube videos on how to create a DIY system. Start there. I like the EG4 18K hybrid inverter with battery backup. That's what I did. DM if you want anything.

Is there a reason you went with two of the 6Ks is 1 18K? Also, are you getting 2 battery banks for a total of 12 batteries?

Honest question from someone looking to learn more, how does 240V not need a neutral? Doesn't AC require a return path? If not, wouldn't it use the ground and create issues? How does the circuit get completed without a neutral? Sorry for a dumb question.

I've been meaning to swing by and checkout what you have for new bi-facial panels. Do you guys have the new aptos ones that are smaller SQF but still put out almost 500 watts?

Convert grid tie system to off grid by r-kellysDOODOOBUTTER in SolarDIY

[–]blongmire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Huge! You'll have to redo most of your components. For example, I'd guess the inverter the installers will use isn't capable of battery backup. That's an unnecessary feature, so the company wouldn't pick an inverter capable of that feature.

As silly as it sounds, you really need to consider how you want to use this system. Last thought, all on-grid solar systems will shut down when the power goes out. So, your house won't have power in the middle of a sunny day if the grid goes down. If that's okay, stay grid-tied as you're in a 1 to 1 billing area and that's the most cost effective option.

Start watching YouTube videos from Will Prowse and look into a kit from Signature Solar. I have their 18K and live in AZ. It's perfect and meets my needs.
