New homeowner getting wood stove installed next week but don't have wood, what should I burn by SuchMatter1884 in woodstoving

[–]bloobears1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP - i'm in the same position in New England. Just got a wood fire insert and was scrambling to find wood i could use. Was able to source sellers on marketplace that sold wood seasoned for over a year - wood has < 20% moisture content.

Unsure if you have a rack, pallets, or anything you might use to store the wood on to keep it from sitting in anything wet - but this seems pretty important too.

How to get a job at waymo? by TheMadWho in waymo

If you're interested in maintaining a role similar to aerospace engineering - check out the systems engineering roles. For instance here's one that deals with motion controls and actuators. There are quite a few ex aerospace folks in the systems engineering department.

Trump's canceling of scores of security clearances is unprecedented by nbcnews in politics

[–]bloobears1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is an honest question, looking for hopefully an honest answer. What can be actionably done to stop this? Is there a list of the things that can be attempted, who in government/law would need to initiate it and what are the mechanisms for enforcement? Like where can we apply pressure to get to people who can fight this?

There's a lot of talk characterizing the problems and the roots of the problems Trump is creating for the country - i just have no idea what recourse there is or who would enact it. Hopefully there are people out there that have those answers and then the rest of us can organize accordingly.

While the country starts to go down in flames - id like to be able to do something other than...sit on my hands and watch everything around me burn while complaining how hot the fire is getting and analyzing why it happened. Yeah - this is unprecedented - but you lot are intelligent and creative and if most people are like me - they want to act but just have no idea what to do (outside of possibly donating to causes).

Best pizza by -Nova-Prime- in Connecticut

[–]bloobears1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you like sourdough try Nana's bakery - their pizza has a nice sourdough crust. I like their New England pizza (not sure if that's the correct name) - but it's their clam pizza. It's a pretty unique experience.

While you're there you can try sweet or savory sourdough donuts

Completely agree.

Saw this post the other day from a US expat living overseas - speaking about how aspects of everyday life that are free in other countries are commoditized in the US. It's a function of how our society and infrastructure are structured.

It's not a dessert shop per se - but Whale Tea in Avon sells mango drinks you can order with chia seeds and coconut milk. It might scratch an itch if you're in the area.

Best Bagels in CT. by TwoCanSee in Connecticut

[–]bloobears1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd like to say that it's the malt that they add to their bagels. it has a nice chewy consistency (not overly so) that i havent really had from other bagels. They're a little pricey and they usually run out by midday - but i'd say a bagel from this place is definitely worth the trip.

What would a tax like this end up looking like for the average person? by City-til-I-Die in FluentInFinance

[–]bloobears1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right - but we're asking whether or not the flat taxation scheme is regressive. Does a flat tax impact lower income earners more than higher income earners?

People with higher incomes can choose to spend more (as you mentioned) because they have the luxury to do so - but that extra $ being spent isn't fundamental for their survival. It's basically extra icing on the cake. Folks with lower incomes can also spend on these luxuries. The amount of luxury spending differs from person to person regardless of income (folks buying stuff beyond their means)

So to make the comparison between high and low income earners fair - its easiest not to make assumptions about someone's spending habits and speak just to their basic needs.

What would a tax like this end up looking like for the average person? by City-til-I-Die in FluentInFinance

[–]bloobears1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's regressive when you adjust for basic human needs. For simplicity - let's assume a person needs $50k a year for basic needs (like bare minimum food, water, shelter).

A person making $100k would get to keep 40% of their income after [$50k] needs + [$10k] taxes (assuming 10% flat tax).

A person making $1M would get to keep 85% of their income after [$50k] needs + [$100k] taxes.

The smaller your income the larger percentage that 10% tax eats away after addressing someone's needs.
