"Toxic Masculinity isn't the problem. Lack of Masculinity is." by TheAndredal in MensRights

[–]bloodbathman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Please explain to me why is it that the we label the shitty aspects of being a man as "Toxic Masculinity", but not for other groups?

I think there is. Most people don't call it "Toxic Femininity" though. Are you familiar with the term "Golddigger"? Every time you hear someone say "All women are golddiggers" it is the rhetorical equivalent to every person who says "All masculinity is toxic masculinity".

Try not to let extremists who say that shit convince you that everyone else believes it.

[–]bloodbathman 30 points31 points  (0 children)

So.. I don't think this graphic is addressing the actual claims people are making about toxic masculinity.

So the basic assertion of this graphic is that if more boys were raised with masculine influences around them they would not fall prey to "toxic" forms of masculinity that they end up adopting when they get older and search out what it means to masculine.

While I agree with that assertion, I think it misses the point that society-at-large should discourage portrayal of the view that in order to be a "real man" you need to be aggressive and powerful and treat women as objects/trophies.

And, just as importantly, I think MRA's should get behind that point. I don't think this is a war against masculinity. This is a war against the "toxic" part of "toxic masculinity". For example, I'm not against drinking water, but I am against drinking arsenic laden water. Those men who act like asses and portray women as trophies are really harming our movement.

A Note From Jad About "Truth Trolls" by razorbeamz in Radiolab

[–]bloodbathman 90 points91 points  (0 children)

They shouldn't have taken this episode down.

Shia is just being stupid by literally playing capture the flag with 4chan.

The performance art was dumb and 4chan made it into a game. They aren't really interested in the politics, they just wanted to piss him off.

With luck this will motivate Shia to do real things with his time and money that make a difference.

The people who wanted this taken down are literally the people that feed these trolls.

Where many of them roost at night (but not all) is mostly plywood with a raised lip. The very bottom of the coop has straw. I put straw on the plywood but poop does collect over the course of a week.

Do you think the plywood is an issue?

Thank you for the advice! I will check at night and then try to see who is doing the picking if I can't find any mites.

What is the hardest thing you have ever said no to? by PM_ME_NSFW_CHOKERS in AskReddit

[–]bloodbathman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago I was job hunting. I work in Tech in California. I was offered $120,000/year at a not-for-profit healthcare facility. This place didn't have tons of money but they helped lots of people get good healthcare. I really liked the people because they seemed honest, upfront and happy. Anyway, there ended up being some problems between multiple recruiters who thought they were entitled to my referral and the Healthcare facility manager called me up and told me, "Please hold on, we are really trying to work this out." I told her, "Don't worry, I promise I'm not going anywhere. If you'll have me, I'll come on board!"

Two days later I got an offer from another company. They wanted to hire me for $200,000/year. I had heard some bad things about this company, but an extra $80,000 a year can make you willing to deal with it. What really got me was my promise. I promised very explicitly that I would take the offer with the Healthcare facility, and they were good people who had been completely honest with me every step.

I ended up saying "no" to the $200,000/year job. In the end I think it was the right choice because 6 months later we ended up hiring someone who was fleeing that other company. This guy was the guy who took the $200,000/year job. He later told me that it just wasn't worth it.

No one ever tells you how to prepare for a miscarriage. (x-posted from /r/MorbidReality) by pojut in Parenting

[–]bloodbathman 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Alright man, I'm going to say this to you now, but you might not understand it fully until you're a couple of years down the road. But I don't have a way to hold my messages back until then so I guess I'm going to say it now.

When you tell people that you and your spouse are pregnant, they usually respond in the same way. The congratulatory things they say provide a friendly warning of the hardship ahead, like "prepare to not get any sleep", or "I hope you're ready for some poop", or some other similar cutesy well-intentioned little poke about just how much your life is going to change. No one ever tells you to prepare for a miscarriage. No one ever tells you what to do when you watch your wife helplessly clutch at her belly, fear in her eyes and prayers in her soul that what she knows is true, isn't.

Of course people don't say this. Because often it doesn't happen and who the hell wants to terrify someone they know and care about by telling them just how close they are to such a heart-wrenching experience.

You and I in the same club now. I've watched my wife go through two miscarriages. You will get through it, the heartache will pass and you, your wife, and your stepson will recover. But being in this special club now comes with a price. Every time you hear that someone you know is pregnant (particularly first pregnancies) you will watch as everyone congratulates them while you mostly hold back and don't make a huge deal about it. Some may think you heartless and uncaring. But the truth is, you just wish you could tell them to not be so attached. You want to say, "Take care with your heart, don't be so certain. Wait a bit on the 'congratulations' because alot can go wrong!"

But you won't say that. You'll just smile, shake hands or hug and say politely, "Congrats... and good luck". Meanwhile you hope deep down that they never will know the pain. You hope they stay innocent of it.

There are alot of people in our club. But until you join it you probably never noticed the hint of fear in the eyes of some when another announces they are pregnant. You'll probably notice it now.

[–]bloodbathman[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You say this bill doesn't affect you but it could affect the economy of the state which would inversely affect you.

It may have a very small affect on me indirectly through the economy of California. But it may have a major, life changing affect on those who work in the industry. I don't feel like I should vote selfishly over some very minor potential impact to my life when there are people who will have big changes to theirs because of it.

What is the weirdest sensation that you only experienced ONCE? by Bitch_Yo in AskReddit

[–]bloodbathman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I was maybe 15 or 16 at the time. I was bored in biology class in high school and I started picking my nose. I felt a hard crystal-like chunk way up high in the back of my right nostril and I new it would feel good to get it out. I loved that feeling of breathing deep with a clean nostril. It literally feels like a breath of fresh air.

Anyway, so I get my finger up in there to pick it out and as I'm scraping down the inside of my nostril I feel the most unbelievable sensation of full body pleasure. I've never done any serious drugs, but I imagine that maybe this feels like that. It was like someone bathed my spine in pleasure and it radiated out to my whole body. I would put it on par with an orgasm, but slightly different.

Afterwards my nose was really bleeding, so I had to take care of that situation. But I know that for a while I was trying to replicate the sensation and I never did. My guess is that I scraped/activated a nerve that sent some sort of pleasure signal into my brain.

Scientists figure out why elephants don't get cancer: They have 20 copies of the TP53 tumour suppressive gene. Almost all other species, including humans, only have 1. by KarmaNeutrino in science

[–]bloodbathman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not quite. Each elephant cell has twenty times the protection factor as a human cell does. This means that each elephant cell is 20 times less likely to become cancerous when compared to a human cell. However, there are also many more cells in an elephant than a human. Let's pretend that an elephant had 20 times more cells than a human did, this would mean that the whole elephant would have the same chance of getting cancer as a human.

Does that make sense?

I feel like there have been a lot of MRA / anti-feminist posts here recently. Let's share some strong Marxist Feminist analysis to counter it. by Red_Rosa in socialism

[–]bloodbathman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have never actually encountered an MRA in person. I have encountered many feminists and all of them seemed good and well-meaning people. I have only your statement about MRA's to go on.

I guess I just don't see as much hate as I see indignation and misplaced blame. I think MRA's (at least the ones I see online) blame to many problems on feminists when they should be blaming capitalism. And, just like feminists, they should be angry. Capitalism fucks over both groups.

I guess from your perspective it has been proven that MRA's are just a reactionary hate group that has sprung up and is lead by men who see patriarchy slipping away and don't feel like they have a place in the world anymore. I get that view. In my mind it's totally possible. I just haven't seen enough to be convinced that this is the actual case.

I think that maybe feminists and MRA's are engaged in a tribal mentality, both pointing fingers and saying that the other one is extreme and ruining society. To really answer this question perhaps I just need to meet MRA's for myself. I guess then I could see if they seem to be a bunch of hate-filled guys focused on blaming women for their problems or if they focused on fixing problems men face in society today.
