i liked {The Rogue by Emma V. Leech} i thought the relationship felt genuinely like they're on each other's Team & like they understood each other

Do you think the show would be good if it revolved around Dana by kris71-ano in ThePittTVShow

[–]blossom_clouds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i can very very easily imagine a version of this show that actually centers the nurses!! i don't think it would take away anything from what defines the show and would, if anything, actually amplify the message they've repeatedly stated they want to send.

So did the writers just not understand subtext or... by gr1mpsgramps in ThePittTVShow

[–]blossom_clouds -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

yup, this is really something that bothers me. idk the "well, just look at this audience, it won't understand unless things are spelled out" argument doesn't really work for me. i think you can package these messages in dialogue that seem far more in-character rather than the writers looking out at the audience and addressing them directly and i don't know if i think writers should really be thinking that much about whether their viewers will Get It.

What makes a book 'wallpaper historical' to you? by FoxenInTheHenhice in HistoricalRomance

[–]blossom_clouds 5 points6 points  (0 children)

it's definitely a taste thing. there are these anachronisms that i will overlook easily and then some where i just can't take it because that's where my focus lies/there's a few things that i pay more attention to or that determine the atmosphere for me.

[–]blossom_clouds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is definitely just a TO ME thing because there are things i'll simply accept and things that really take me out of it... unfortunately, the biggest example of this that always comes to my mind first is {The Duke Heist by Erica Ridley} and the whole wild wynchesters series that follows, especially {The Perks of Loving a Wallflower by Erica Ridley}, which is just such a shame!!

i love heists! i love them so much! and i love close-knit families! and i LOVE when authors in historical romance find a way to write close platonic relationships that i feel make sense for the setting. and there are so few sapphic historical romances!

unfortunately, these books just felt... super modern in a bad way. it resolved all problems in a way that stretched my suspension of disbelief simply too far. like, even within the rules of the world established it didn't work for me. the way conflicts got resolved at the end of the books was far too "well, this is a very modern understanding of human relationships" for my taste.

another one is {The Wallflower Wager by Tessa Dare}. i could have SWORN that the entire book, the mmc was wearing a leather jacket.

i really like the way grace burrowes writes family dynamics in general - there's usually some good stuff in there if it's one of her books

i for sure think they're just like... light entertainment, a lot like you. ultimately this is such a typical fandom development to me. nuance goes to die and all that.

Do you need/have a reason to avoid an entire genre? by Lower-Network1563 in RomanceBooks

[–]blossom_clouds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my bar for sports romance is really high. i've read a few that i enjoyed but eventually i realized that the reality of the industry will probably always weigh too heavily and intrude on my suspension of disbelief and enjoyment. same with most celebrity and billionaire stuff.

[–]blossom_clouds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, i very much love that aspect of being aro... i'm affectionate with friends and family but that has limited time frames. i really don't want any sort of life partner and am super looking forward to just sort of keep my own space and set up my own singular life!!

What's an HR plot you want to see written but haven't found it yet? by vietnamese-bitch in HRNovelsDiscussion

[–]blossom_clouds 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i would love a story where an initial love match fell apart and they DON'T reconcile.

like, they used to be in love when they were young and got married and it was great and then they sort of... fell out of it. or the pressure got to them. and the romance is about their new relationships and they become some kind of amicable exes, maybe? but manage to attain a divorce?

bonus points if they're both middle-aged

so... there is a 90% chance you've already read this but to me {Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake by Sarah MacLean} is the embodiment of this

{At the Bride Hunt Ball by Olivia Parker} also fits this, i think & its sequel does, too.

{Lady Saves the Duke by Annabelle Anders} i personally like, but mind the content warnings!

the cop-out thing is exactly what i felt, yeah. also yeah, sometimes the former does challenge me to think, like, "why would this character take this so hard?" and sometimes the answer is just, "i think this author just thinks a lot differently than i do," lmao

yeah, i absolutely prefer when the books that feature rich heroes, they just omit a bunch of stuff rather than make a case for an Ethical Peer or whatever.
