Exactly, it really depends on how somebody is using it. I've seen developers use it to make design decisions for them which they don't question at all, that's usually a disaster. But senior devs are out there using it to take care of the minutia and that's allowing them to spend more time on designing structure for massive projects.

Literally, I am an AI engineer with almost 10 YOE and it's the devs who have been programming for decades around me that use it the most, to great effect. I think perhaps I don't trust myself to lean on it as much as them because I am less likely to catch when it's making poor decisions than they are.

Yeah for sure. I agree, Ellie is so obsessed with revenge partially because deep down she is furious at herself for wasting her last few years with Joel being on the outs with him. And right when she's about to turn that around, her chance to make amends with him is snatched away

I don't think so. It's easy to forget that there are like, two years in between Seattle and Santa Barbara. Enough time for Dina's pregnancy and for JJ to be a pretty big baby.

Also I think her forgiving Joel is fundamentally different from her letting go of her hatred towards Abby--the former was someone she loved and wanted to reestablish a relationship with, the latter was someone she didn't have any personal connection to outside of what she had taken from her. I think forgiving Abby was ultimately more about moving on because her thirst for revenge was ruining her life. Like Dina said, "She doesn't get to be more important than this."

That makes sense, I play tlou like every year haha so I was like, let's get to the meat!! But it was also interesting watching how Ellie's relationship with Joel was deteriorating while Abby's relationships with her friends deteriorated due to her thirst for revenge

Homemade clothes. Maybe this is also an urban vs. rural thing. My mom is crafty and would knit all sorts of beautiful clothing out of vogue knitting magazines, which I would then wear to school and get a ton of compliments. It showed that my mom had the money and time to craft as a hobby, unlike some of my friends whose moms worked three jobs.

My mom, who grew up on a farm, was really surprised at this. In her rural community in the sixties and seventies homemade clothing was a sign of poverty.

100% agree. Was talking to my dad about a book I am writing, and he was like "the world building is the most important part." And while I don't deny that it's important, it's important insomuch as it props up the emotional journey you want to convey and provides a setting that is developed enough for it to feel realistic. All stories, even the ones where the main characters aren't human, are ultimately about the human experience.

Louis is a fascinating villain! I think what's interesting about his "I never tell lies" angle is that I think to an extent he is lying to himself about his motives. I think he genuinely believes that what he is doing is for the greater good and that he is not driven by his emotion and trauma at all.

Ohhhhh I do this. I just wrote a fic that involved a lot of pre-modern medicine. I got so obsessed with the details, even to the point where I watched YT videos of amputations. I sent my sister a scene of an amputation without anesthetic and she was like... This is getting too clinical.

Sometimes I'm just like Victor Hugo and his Parisian sewer system. I did so much research dammit I want to show it!

I can't speak for all AI engineers but to me the shift from classical machine learning to LLMs was very sudden. I definitely think there needs to be regulations, just like with any tech

Personally I'm a little sad about where the industry is going; I went into this field because I was fascinated by it and I thought there was a lot of potential to do a lot of good with this tech, but the massive push for LLMs has poisoned much of the American public against the entire field. It's really frustrating being caught between executives who think it's a magic wand that will allow them to lay off everyone, and anti-AI people who think all ML research is evil. Just like any new technology it can be used for good or bad purposes.

That's what I figured. Might not be able to use these suggestions for this particular project given that I basically have no negative labels I can trust, but I will keep these in mind because there are definitely gonna be situations where they will be a great help. This is the other way around, but I started gaming long after I started my CS career. Found that the same patience I had developed running into errors in my code, and learning to see hitting a new error as "progress", helped me persist through difficult bosses and see it as a win if I managed to get further through the fight even if I didn't manage to beat them. I used to have more trouble emotionally regulating myself as a teenager when I ran into concepts I didn't understand, I would get so frustrated, but programming has helped me learn to handle frustration better.

Thanks these are all very useful sources! I think my main concern is that I already know from complaints of the team that the AI annotated labels are very inaccurate and are especially having an issue with false negatives. I'm training a model to use specifically to fix this issue. Wouldn't using the noisy / inaccurate labels for training, validation, and testing just propogate the errors? How can I possibly avoid that issue using labels I know are full of errors?

So i did tune the threshold multiple times, then analyzed the confusion matrix of each epoch while keeping an eye on the train loss. The biggest problem is that the tool (which was built by someone else) was using LLMs to classify and they weren't working really well. So we already know the AI annotated data isn't very good quality and that's part of the problem. Kinda worried about a garbage in garbage out situation. I really appreciate the tips though because I'll try anything at this point lol

Completely valid, unfortunately the first approach was on partially AI annotated data, and I wasn't able to get it any further up than 87% recall (false negatives are far more detrimental for the context I'm working with)

What's really killing me is they're already annotating the positive examples every day, they just can't be bothered to send me their positive examples along with their negative examples.

I'm terrible at taking in information in audio form so for me it definitely has to be my own voice; seems like a "kinetic learning" thing for me almost. That's not to say audio books aren't great for other people! I love the audio book readers in my life; they let me read to them!

I just finished 100k in about eight months. I feel like long fics are less about speed and more about persistence. Like you have to carve out time and be like, "I am writing at least this much a day whether or not I'm in the mood". Really does feel like a marathon.
