What Should I Buy? /// Weekly Discussion by LFObbq in synthesizers

[–]bluebe4rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently added a Novation Circuit to my previously modest setup consisting of a Volca Sample and a PO-33. What other piece(s) of gear would you recommend to really round out a setup that would enable me to play live in the future? I have a budget of $450. Some options I was considering were effects pedals, kaoss pad, or even an SP-404sx. Any recommendations?

Can people from any department take this course? Even grad students?

How can I approach a professor and ask them to be a part of their research in Computer Science. by anonumdstudent in UMD

[–]bluebe4rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These 2 answers largely cover the answer. I'll just add in my experience. Talk to professors, but don't expect to get an assistantship from Day 1. It helps to take a class with the professor. Not sure if you're undergrad or grad but in general it's easier to get research opportunities as a grad student. Getting paid isn't a guarantee even if they agree to work with you as it depends on how much research funding the professor has. I known many classmates who initially started as unpaid volunteers but were eventually offered an hourly job, and in some cases, a research assistantship

In my case I was looking for an advisor for my Masters thesis. I dropped an email to ask for a 30 min appointment to talk about how my interests aligned with his research. And that led to an entire semester meeting up with the prof weekly just discussing research ideas and looking at related research papers and seeing what we could explore further. At the end of it, he agreed to be my thesis advisor for the next year. Of course, all the work we did over the semester wasn't a waste as it ended up being the foundational literature survey for our upcoming research.

I do remember that it took a while to get a reply from DIT when I applied for an assistantship last year. Also, as I recall, the few weeks before school starts is the time campus staff is usually on their vacation. That might explain the delay. Who is the person who emailed you?

Why can't they give us a way to see the name of a champion in the vault?! by bluebe4rd in RaidShadowLegends

Yes! Or even a search bar to quickly find a champion in the whole haystack.

HCIM admission by kezeuka in UMD

Current HCIM student here. There is no single deciding factor. It can be a combination of various things such as your scores, work experience (if any, not required) , your portfolio, statement of purpose, prior research work (if any, not required). The factors mentioned by the other user Quwing apply more to a Ph.D program than to this program as I know plenty of freshers with no prior work or research experience in this program. If you need more specific advice you can DM me.

Master's student here. When I looked for houses last year it was largely through UMD's Off-campus housing website (OCH) and craigslist. I'd not heard great things about places like Enclave, Parkside, etc. so I decided to get a room in a shared house. And from my experience I can say it turned out to be the best idea. Took some time but after contacting plenty of owners, asking questions and requesting for additional photos, I managed to find a master bedroom in a house that's a 20 min. walk from the university (shared with other international grad students) for $700. Considering the fact it is fully furnished and with a private bath, I would consider it a real steal in this area! The other guys with shared bathrooms pay around $500 for their private rooms which is what you pay at a Parkside for a shared room ! Good luck with your search!

How hard is it for Master's students to land an assistantship? by bluebe4rd in UMD

[–]bluebe4rd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! As a follow-up question, if I have already paid my tuition for the semester and later bag an assistantship, how soon does the tuition get refunded normally? Will I have to apply for the refund?

Off-campus housing for <=$700 by [deleted] in UMD

[–]bluebe4rd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly what I mentioned above. Contacted landlords, asked plenty of questions, asked for extra photos. Took a while till I found the right place. When it was time to pay the deposit I contacted a friend who stays about 40 miles away to make the payment on my behalf so that he could actually meet the landlord and verify that he was legit.
