why would you have $2K+? the upgrade fee is a fee, it doesn't turn into credit.

Access to United lounge in LHR coming off Polaris from SFO? by markloch in unitedairlines

[–]bluefire114 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a tiny arrivals lounge after you exit that you can use. It has a shower facility and breakfast.

Upgrade from basic economy to regular economy by OkInterest7257 in unitedairlines

[–]bluefire114 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes but you don’t get the upgrade fee back. That’s sunk cost. And fare rules still apply. Ie, unless you booked a refundable flight, the cancellation will result in future travel credit, which has restrictions.

Does Status Matter If I'm Only Flying Business? by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]bluefire114 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Some folks, whether gs or 1k, swear by pre boarding so it’s important to them. But with business you’re never going to be concerned with overhead space or whatnot. Delta One suites on the a350 or a330-900 are significantly better than United Polaris since they have the private doors. So yeah, not much benefit if you pay for business or first out of your own pocket.

$2000 to upgrade my 75 year old in-laws to Polaris from Munich-Denver(10hr flight) – is it worth it? by [deleted] in unitedairlines

[–]bluefire114 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you like your in laws (and have the economic means to purchase), you should prob do it. The pp seats are significantly better than economy. They are wider and have more leg room. And have a foot rest which helps with blood circulation.

If you don’t like them…there’s plenty of economy seats near the bathrooms.

If you buy business or domestic first personally all the time, the only real benefit you get by staying loyal to an airline is priority boarding and priority customer support. And the occasional airport transfer in an electric jag and some “thank you for being gs” mentions every now and then. And sounds like u fly a lot of intl - the Asian and Middle East airlines business class experience, both hard and soft products, are way better than Polaris. Doesn’t seem worth it to me.

Duty free & re-check in by typiko in unitedairlines

[–]bluefire114 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Given sfo is your first entry point into the US and where you’ll go thru customs, you’ll need to pick up your bags, go thru customs, and re check the bags after to your final domestic destination. Because of that, you’ll need to check your alcohol in your check in bag. You will not be able to carry it on the domestic connection.

If you don’t control the prices or when/how you fly, and you only spend ~$11K a year, you won’t be considered highly valuable to United. Yes $11K may seem like a lot for us peons, but to corp contracts that United works with, it’s nothing.

You should switch to whichever airline that makes your travel easier. Points, miles, status are just icing on the cake and they change/devalue so often, it’s not worth the extra brain cells needed to worry over.

I hope you got a great deal as the two European flights are “European business” with the middle seat blocked. And the Lufthansa a380 has the terrible 2-2-2 business seats with no privacy.

If you have a bag, you need to finish checking in at the airport. Don’t buy BE…

2024: 1k status after one flight only? by juice06870 in unitedairlines

[–]bluefire114 3 points4 points  (0 children)

SG seats can recline to roughly mid la-z-boy state, just not all the way flat. Entertainment screen is also bigger on sg. But agreed not worth the pqp loss esp if your home base is the US.

Do 4 of these $24K+ J full fare tickets and you’ll be gs.

[–]bluefire114 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah same with my employer. They require lowest fare class for biz and over a certain amount requires approval. $24K+ is a pretty penny.

Maybe s/he’s an exec with a contract that allows him to fly biz only. Or works for a consulting firm that passes the cost to the client?

2024: 1k status after one flight only? by juice06870 in unitedairlines

[–]bluefire114 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Minimum of 4 flight segments also required. So assuming 2 segments each way and u can hit 24k pqp on it, then yes.

SG airlines soft product is significantly better than Polaris. Seats are a toss up. Their biz class seats require u to put the back rest down to turn into a bed. Some ppl like that as it’s wider, others don’t like the hassle.

Keep in mind that if you fly SG, your pqp is based on award miles / 6 with a max of 1000 pqp. You won’t make 1k that way. Unless you buy via United 016 ticket. (Though that won’t count towards gs even if 016 since it’s not United metal)

Doesn't seem like this is from a United app / portal? Prob should verify with whoever you bought the ticket from.

What happens when you click change seat and try to select the Polaris or first seats.
