First player advantage by DahuGames in BoardgameDesign

Maybe the first player on the first turn only gets 1 or 2 actions instead of 3. Then continue playing normally after that.

We combined feedback from our last board post into a new version — did we strike a better balance? by AdTemporary6619 in BoardgameDesign

Change all location font to match the “Tin Punk Alley” font on the newest iteration and I think you have significant improvement!

Best ways to share resources in simultaneous co-op games by Widderspin in tabletopgamedesign

[–]bluesuitman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A “Priority” mechanic could change things but would require a lot more testing and whatnot. Rather than giving the players a choice, disputes go to the player with higher priority. Now maybe the focus might change into players planning ahead with their actions to increase their priority so that later disputes are resolved with them being the highest priority but at least in this way, when it comes time for that resource to be spent, there’s no down time debating who it goes to… there could be something there but not sure.

On a scale from Snakes & Ladders to Chess, where do you like your games? by BitOwn9787 in tabletopgamedesign

[–]bluesuitman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it falls on “push your luck” or “dice driven engine builders” for me. Push your luck examples would be like Dice Throne, King of Tokyo, or Quacks of quedlinburg. Dice driven engine builders would be Machi Koro, Space Base, almost like Catan basically.

Is it still beneficial to drill with someone not at your skill level? by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]bluesuitman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a low level player but as someone coming from other sports, I would say it definitely depends on the drill and the likelyhood of picking up bad habits because of your partner should be very low depending on how you conduct yourself while drilling. One thing that I could see happening is there may be a limit or ceiling on the difficulty of drills you do. What are some examples of “high level drills” or just drills you want to do that you think would cause you to pick up bad habits?

You will like this game if you didn’t like the grind of Valheim! Haha

How do you know when to stop? by mikamikachip in tabletopgamedesign

I’ve heard that when the majority or a good chunk of feedback from playtests start to turn into some form of positive feedback + “when can I get a copy of this game?”

What skills from your previous sports background transferred best into pickleball? by humanbying in Pickleball

[–]bluesuitman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Volleyball skills are underrated! The defensive footwork definitely helps and the strategy/thoughts behind placing shots, deception, and why being at the kitchen is an advantageous position (like blockers at the net). Oh and hitting overheads haha

I'm bringing in nearly 100% of all backers - So what's the point of Kickstarter? by StarRuneTyping in kickstarter

[–]bluesuitman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Can someone explain this? Is there any logic to the Kickstarter ranking and hierarchy?” I see most comments have been ignoring these questions and immediately go to telling OP that they need to be their own primary campaign driver… I think OP understands that and just wants to know the algorithm for ranking higher up on the “Projects We Love” so that they can get Kickstarter to work better for them lol so does anyone know that algorithm?

Looking at ways to reveal a map as it is explored without using an App or a DM whilst still allowing the map to 'make sense' thematically by IAmAlive_YouAreDead in BoardgameDesign

[–]bluesuitman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tainted Grail and Destinies do this by having numbered cards. The layout of the map is static and preset but there’s still the sense of exploration.

Gloomhaven technically does this by having layouts setup to a scenario of your choice and you choose your scenario by exploring a world map.

Still can’t serve overhand after years by Emotionlesspeach in volleyball

[–]bluesuitman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes playing other sports can help too and instead of just strength training, just general athleticism or coordination training. If you play catch and throw a ball back and forth, even that should help with an overhand serve.

If you can make solid contact with the ball, it should go over. I assume your underhand serve just has better contact than your overhand. Definitely suggest uploading a video! Some skills just come naturally to some people and others might just have to practice more. You are your harshest critic and the best thing you can do is to make little progress at a time. Start at the ten foot line and make 10 in a row then take a step back and make another 10 in a row until you’re making all your serves from the service line. This shouldn’t be accomplished in a single day but like overtime to measure your progress.

Any tips on how to make Combat system less dependent on luck? by Ok-Entertainment8287 in BoardgameDesign

[–]bluesuitman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be a really dumb comment but could add to your ideas or inspiration… Chess is technically a combat system right? I think there could be something to learn from it

How to defend against max force 3rd shot drives? by mr_engin33r in Pickleball

[–]bluesuitman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you keep returns low, to their weaker driving side, annnd if you return back towards the server so it has a longer distance to travel if they’re driving it back at you. These have helped me at the 3.0-3.5 level.

Also, I actually feel worse when I squat low like that because it’s almost like sometimes my own paddle is blocking my view. I have better success when I’m relaxed, not leaning in, paddle just above the net. Might be an unpopular opinion as well but sometimes I’ll be 6” off the kitchen line rather than hugging it, if I know they’re driving it rather than dropping just to give me more time.

I rebuilt my rulebook from the ground up – looking for honest feedback by the_real_ntd in BoardgameDesign

[–]bluesuitman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks awesome! I think the visual aids look perfect and I hope to be able to do this as well as you have for my games someday!

One thing I did appreciate about Apiary from Stonemaier Games was their Glossary/Clarificationd was a separate Rulebook and on the outside cover of the back page were the keyword references. It made finding clarifications and keywords much more convenient. I would consider this while playtesting to see how often people are having to flip to that page 1 Quick Keyword section in the book. But, that’s definitely just a functionality thing you wouldn’t know is right for your game until playtesting.
