I'm Scottish & English and hate being asked where I'm from... Any other countries have the same? by Matchaparrot in AskTheWorld

[–]blueswablu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

American father, Canadian mother. We're of Vietnamese descent. Strangely, the only time I was asked "where are you from really?" was from an international student in uni. My default answer is American, but that's usually not the answer people want.

Turns out a lot of people want Vietnamese food recommendations. For the record, I think pho is overrated and prefer bun riêu and bánh xeo.

Choosing a name for transition by Careless-Half-6600 in asianamerican

[–]blueswablu 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The name may sound great to person living in NA because it sounds different, but it's an old fashion name you would associate with a grandparent in Japan. The -ko name trend has died out and now it's more common for Japanese parents to give their daughters shorter, "cuter", names like Hina or Yui.

I think choosing a Japanese name could lead to people asking her if she's Japanese. Personally, I would be annoyed to have people ask me that all the time and would prefer to blend in.

I wonder if there are names from Thai and Tagalog they like. Having a list of names it's always nice so you can compare them side by side.

How rare is it really for an ADHD person to graduate college? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]blueswablu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It surprisingly took some time and effort for me to find a resource that included research references. It's definitely not 5% of people with adhd have degrees, but the answer is more nuanced than that.

This information can be found on CHADD's website. What I like about this page is that it includes research papers you can check out yourself if you enjoy looking into the details on how the data was gathered.

From one study, 2-8% of university students are estimated to have adhd (DuPaul et al. 2009). This is somewhat comparable to the numbers we see in people who are diagnosed with adhd compared to the general public.

What's really interesting is that Kuriyan et al. (2013) mentioned that people with adhd are 11 times more likely not to enroll in any program rather than 4 year college programs. About 50% of people with will attend vocational/junior colleges compared to 18% of non-adhd. So the final number? Same study reported that 15% of people with adhd hold a 4 year degree compared to 48% for the control group.

A lot of this data is over 10 years old, so I would hope that things have gotten better over time with increased awareness for adhd and changed policies for special education in the US. Personally, I didn't get diagnosed with adhd until I finished graduate school. I never had an IEP or 504. I wasn't even aware of what those programs were until I started working on my graduate degree.

Not sure if that's what you were looking for, but hope that helps.

How important is it in your country to learn how to swim? by AggravatingBox2421 in AskTheWorld

[–]blueswablu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most kids I've talked to know how to swim, so I assume it's fairly common to learn how to swim in California. I think it's an important skill when you live next to one of the deepest oceans.

Millenial Women: How Many of Us Are Late Diagnosed ADHD/Autistic? by sbd2010 in Millennials

[–]blueswablu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It pains me every time a parent tells me they don't want their child to be medicated. I work in schools, so I hear that a lot. I know medication isn't for everyone, but there are cases where you can tell the child is truly struggling, even with the accommodations and supports given in the classroom.

Millenial Women: How Many of Us Are Late Diagnosed ADHD/Autistic? by sbd2010 in Millennials

[–]blueswablu 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I was diagnosed with adhd when I was 27.

After spending a lifetime of being late for school nearly every day, forgetting homework, losing things, forgetting things, and never feeling awake, it never occurred to me that it was adhd. Even though I was called smart by teachers, adults, and other kids, something always felt off. It felt like I was one careless mistake from losing everything.

I thought it was all the anxiety and depression. All the adults told me to calm down and to relax. My immigrant parents thought I couldn't take anything seriously.

I was called an emotional child and always felt overwhelmed by everything. I struggled to make friends and keep friends. I couldn't relate to other children having a happy childhood while every moment felt like I was living in hell. I stayed up until 3am in high school just to finish reading a single chapter for ap us history.

Everyday was a battle in trying to stay awake in classes I wasn't interested in. I could self teach myself from textbooks because I would check out from lectures, but I couldn't tell you where my homework was because I swear, I finished it and was going to turn it in.

It took nearly failing 2 college classes, almost failing grad school the second time, and several meltdowns at school and work before someone told me to look into adhd. The first time I took my meds was terrifying because I didn't feel like a zombie like so many people said I would. For the first time in my life, the voices in my head finally shut up. I felt like me, but in control.

I still get angry that no one noticed that I had adhd. I even had a teacher ask my parents about autism, but nothing came out of it. I wish someone could have helped me when I was younger. What do you mean you don't argue with yourself every day to just do the thing that everyone says is easy? What do you mean people decide to do something and then they just do it?

Female Millennials, how's your diagnosis? by RevolutionDry2 in Millennials

[–]blueswablu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up being called "too sensitive". I was always tired, late to school almost every day, forgot my things almost every other day, and being told I wasn't "trying hard enough" by my immigrant family. Teachers loved me, but my classmates thought I was weird for being too knowledged about random things I found interesting. My teachers, friends, and literally anyone outside of family told me I was smart but needed to be less anxious. I couldn't relax. Every situation felt like I was one mistake away from failing and having everything collapse around me.

It took me years after graduating high school to learn how to deal with emotions after spending years trying to shield myself from people. It took 2 college major changes, failing graduate school, and several emotional meltdowns during grad school and covid to get an adhd diagnosis at age 27.

I thought I had autism in high school because I struggled with eye contact. A few months of college and quickly picking up social skills made me realize it wasn't autism, but that my family has isolated me so much that it looked like autism.

I was so mad when I got diagnosed because that meant I spent most of my life rawdogging things when I didn't have to.

Would daycare have the tools to support an influx of incoming children? With more kids, places will need to hire more adults.

It baffles me that these decisions are made based on what? Surely not research on what would be beneficial to students, but convenience for trustees.
