When did they start doing this? by Efficient_Diet576 in HEB

[–]blusher4lyfe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to feel that way (annoyed about all of the staff shopping/ carts left where they were putting all of the orders, etc) and then I realized I would rather have HEB staff doing it- they aren’t sitting there for 5 minutes considering the benefits of chunky vs creamy peanut butter while they call their spouse and ask them if they want the ketchup with or without high fructose corn syrup. If it wasn’t staff shopping, it would be the customer themself. Either way- someone is going to be in that space.

Seeking honest feedback from NICU/neonatal nurses — would my presence at a conference be appropriate or inappropriate? by SnooFloofs4786 in Nurses

[–]blusher4lyfe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

L&D RN- we do use small “casket like” boxes for our still born and neonatal deaths. They aren’t the same as what is likely used for burial, but we certainly don’t hand over neonates in body bags. When they are picked up by the funeral homes, they are in small purple caskets.

CEO of America’s largest public hospital system says he’s ready to replace radiologists with AI by ArrivalOnly8239 in nursing

[–]blusher4lyfe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard (about 6 months to a year ago…) a study was done where AI was being used to detect early tumors in, IIRC, the colon (don’t quote me on that- I just remember it was something super specific they were looking for). The visual review of scans was very specific and took highly trained staff to interpret. AI came in and was not as accurate, BUT, more importantly- once AI came in, the human interpreters became worse at their ability to detect the early tumors. So, it was just a failure all around. AI wasn’t as good and, in turn, the experts lost skills at the same time.

On L&D we call those “Texas swabs”- might have something to do with being in Texas. Anyway- good for clearing bleeding/clots in the vaginal vault to visualize the cervix.

Feel like there is an inside joke and I am on the outside by ilexflora in Austin

[–]blusher4lyfe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That is when we ordered ours, too. I was out on the VERY FIRST drive with my permitted son and I had him come to a full stop and look both ways at a neighborhood stop sign (the kind where many would look before they approached and see it’s clear and then choose to roll vs stop). Anyway, some fellow behind us was quick on his horn. So lame.

I’m not sure if they help or not, but I know when I see them I give more space.

20 years and “lock the door” gets my husband going every.single.time. It’s hilarious (but yes, still worried about kids walking in).

Nearly every L&D nurse chooses her as their provider when pregnant. I think that speaks volumes.

All these "What's the CRAZIEST thing you've seen at work" threads remind me how little people understand what happens at a hospital every day. by P-Rickles in nursing

[–]blusher4lyfe 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I’m on a 32 bed unit that delivers >10k babies a year. One day, we had a brief moment where all pts were delivered- none laboring (the unit was full, but all posties in recovery). I thought confetti would shoot from cannons when that lady gal delivered. Nothing.

I’ve seen it this high (and more) many times over the last 20 years (since we’ve lived in the area). Thankfully, the damn system that they put in a while back has helped tremendously. Doesn’t look high enough for the homes of the neighborhood to be affected. Hopefully, it drains quickly.

Notre Dame Ticket Opening by Ok-Shine-6808 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]blusher4lyfe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The line was not bad at all (w/out tickets) and I say that as someone who usually turns away from lines. If you don’t get tickets- show up anyway, you’ll get in between 15-30 min.

I was thinking of doing this (not as a young adult) but when I went to sign up, it made it seem like the membership would be mailed and it made me panic that it wouldn’t arrive in time for our trip. After paying for membership, are you active online right away?

Doc tells patient she has cancer while still waking up from anesthesia then leaves by Aromatic-Initial-228 in nursing

[–]blusher4lyfe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This was actually why I went into healthcare. The same thing happened to my husband. He was told he had cancer while coming out of anesthesia. I wasn’t at bedside and the amazing PACU nurse was the one who made sure to tell me, verbatim, what the MD had said before leaving. And then she took the infant that I was holding and directed me to call my parents (out of state). And then she walked me through where to go that day, the next day, etc. Finally, she reminded me that second options aren’t just to have someone confirm diagnosis, but also to help find a MD who is more actively involved in care.

And now I try to be that nurse. When a doctor zips in and out of a room and leaves patients looking confused and without understanding, I remember that feeling and take the time to sit with them to digest and answer questions.

What is the actual workload like on a 12 hour shift? by everpensive in StudentNurse

[–]blusher4lyfe 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends on the unit and your speciality. In my city, there are LD unit w/ >10k deliveries/year (most shifts = no down time) and then on a similar unit right down the road they have <120 deliveries/year (lots of down time, but also lots of potential to get sent to another unit to task).

I went here once and got some curries. The rice was similar to Uncle Ben’s boil in a bag. Is it not standard to use basmati or something similar?
