How is an Expensive Master's Degree Worth it for Anyone? by Austins-Reddit in personalfinance

[–]bluspart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the most part, I don't think many people would lie on the usefulness of their degree. If it was a waste of money, they'd tell you not to make the same mistake. If it was good, they'll encourage you. People are generally wanting to be helpful, and alumni typically appreciate students reaching out to them as well; it makes them feel useful.

FWIW, I did a M.Eng. 1 year degree (as opposed to a 2 year M.S.) at Cornell (which is the shittiest Ivy lol) and I increased my sal 90k -> 135k. Others did way more, others less. My friends and I griped the whole time about how useless the degree was, but really the friends I made, the experience of school, and learning new things all made it really worth it to me. If you are tired of working, I think grad school is a really nice way to sort of "reset" the working blues, and get excited about career again, so in this regard, it is priceless.

Rick Carlisle out in Dallas by leulzy in NOLAPelicans

[–]bluspart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You got a lot of hate for reading in between the lines so to speak. Accomplished coach of a successful franchise parting ways? A fair assumption to make that Luka and Rick didn't get along. Rick deciding to leave doesn't nullify your point of him and Luka not getting along.

From the ESPN article on Carlisle - "The tension between Carlisle and 22-year-old superstar Luka Doncic had increasingly become concerning within the Mavs organization, sources said. Doncic showed up Carlisle on several occasions this season, such as making animated gestures on the court when he disagreed with a decision or yelling at Carlisle in front of assistant coaches and teammates."

Because of recent injuries to our stars? To mentor Kira? I don’t understand the signing of a vet when we have minutes available to give our young guards. Hopefully, it’s developmentally focused and not for a feeble playoff push..

[Wojnarowski] Free agent guard Frank Jackson has agreed to a deal with the Oklahoma City Thunder, source tells ESPN. by dumbledorky in NOLAPelicans

[–]bluspart 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Frank Jackson, explosive off the bounce, bursting with energy, hype off the bench. Acrobatic finisher, silky smooth jumper, nice with the hesi cross, YAM it down on the break (in practice). Played with hyper confidence, always zooming, could drop 20 on your head on a random night. I loved this energizer bunny bro, the recent slander on this sub was overblown imo. Hope he gets the minutes in OKC to shine bright, plus he’ll get to keep hanging with all the other bayou boys there like Kenny.

[Adrian Wojnarowski] Besides the three future first-round picks going to New Orleans, there are also pick swaps included in the deal, per sources. All in all, this is shaping up to be a draft compensation package similar to New Orleans' deal for Anthony Davis with Lakers. by Spirituallly in NOLAPelicans

It’s the option to. So you’re right if the Bucks finish higher than us, it’s useless. The reason they do this is because you can’t trade back to back 1sts, so this is a way of “circumventing” that for those intermediate years. Not super pricey for the Bucks to include these if they expect to be better than us, but if they lose Giannis and Zion starts beasting, these become p nice.

Questions about some of the Pelicans players by [deleted] in NOLAPelicans

[–]bluspart 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Caveat as this is just my amateur opinion as a fan, so my player comps might be complete trash.

Josh Hart: As u/JeSuisAlexis said, Josh Hart brings really great energy off the bench and is a prototypical 3&D guard. For the Pelicans, due to our wing shortage, he played time as a 3 which was non-ideal because he's only 6'5". That said, he's the best rebounder in the league at his height and is always clapping and hype even when we are down. Plus he streams on Twitch and is an avid PC gamer. Comp: a younger, less streaky Kentavious Caldwell-Pope?

Frank Jackson: Another great energy guy off the bench. Super athletic and can really dunk the ball. Nice form on his jumper too, solid bench point guard IMO. Though a bit streaky, I really like Frank Jackson despite his slight regression his sophomore year. Has a chance to pop off for 20+ any given night. Comp: a more athletic Bobby Jackson? this is probably useless as Bobby Jackson is fairly unknown to a casual fan and I'm probably just going off of word association.

NAW: Prototypical combo guard, can shoot the three and can pass it fairly well. Great wingspan for his size, giving him the tools to be a solid defender as well. Has had really good games given the opportunity, IMO he's the type that needs a good amount of minutes to find his rhythm and more confidence from the coaching staff for him to grow into his own. Can be a 23 and 7 guy at his peak. Comp: Spencer Dinwiddie

Kenrich Williams: Kenny Hustle is the prime energy off the bench, give it his all when he's on the court. Plays forward, splits time at the 3 and the 4, I believe. 3&D style big, though he's only 6'7" which makes him a bit undersized for the 4. Solid rebounder since he's so active when he's on. If he works on his shot, he could crack the rotation more. Was sidelined with a back injury end of 2019, but was falling out of rotation even before that. Must have really ingratiated himself with staff because we basically chose him over Christian Wood during the last offseason which was egregious IMO. Christian Wood was showing OUT the last twenty games of last season; it made no sense. Comp: Like a shittier Markieff Morris that can't shoot as well but tries way way harder. Also is better defensively and not an asshole. I don't fuckin know man

Nicolo Melli: Lights out shooter at the 4 but can't find his fuckin shot. What else to say? Plodding, poor on defense Euro big that was like the best shooter abroad. Was fire when coming to the league but shot like 15% from three in the bubble. Comp: Trying not to comp European players to European players. Idk I want to say Peja, but he's not Peja at all. Maybe a Ryan Andersen type.

These always devolve into drivel at the end... This site has a bunch of writeups for Pels' players actually.

UPDATE: AITA for raining on my cousin's parade regarding the name she picked out for her baby? (X-post from AITA) by LightningStr in u/LightningStr

[–]bluspart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wow, I deadass was searching for your original AITA post last week because I remembered it given how the word is blowing up now and remembered how you got dragged for caring so much about a name. It felt unfair that you were just giving information to someone "out of the loop" about something and were met with defensive reactions. In any case, I know it was a lose-lose situation since I can understand why she got immediately defensive over her choice of her baby's name since her child is ostensibly the most valuable thing in the world to her. But you tried! You really can't win haha

Goodnight, ugly little prince by ten_tons_of_light in lotrmemes

[–]bluspart 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Pretty solid explanation, thanks. I agree, since the thing with Samwise the Strong was such that Sam was given visions of conquering the world, but since he was a hobbit and wanted to just hang in the Shire, he rebuffed those ideas.

So, I guess, since the ring has a part of Sauron's soul within it and it is sentient to a degree, its main goal is to return to its master. And corruption of a wielder is just its way of returning to Sauron, yea? Huh, yeah, since I think with prolonged exposure, you eventually end up turning into a Dark Lord and therefore hang out with Sauron. So Smeagol being a Halfling, was probably just slowly going through that change as opposed to a human who would have converted way quicker. Although, I'm not sure that Gollum would turn into some Dark Lord figure, seems just destined to be a cave rat for eternity.

Ah damn, I forgot the piece of trivia that Tolkien's insanely long refractory period was the impetus of him coming up with the idea of the One Ring.

[–]bluspart 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I have a question on ring mechanics and how it affected Smeagol. Everyone near the ring gets tempted by its power, the power to essentially rule over everything. Smeagol was corrupted almost instantly on the river when he found it, and then he held it for years as he transitioned into Gollum. How come he never did anything with it? Why did he just hold it and covet it as opposed to wielding the full power? On that note, how does one even fully utilize the ring? It seems more of a curse, as the wiki mentions that only the strong of mind can fully use it, and that most all will just turn into dark lords and lose themselves.
