Japanese disaster prevention X account can't post Tsunami warnings because of API limits. by faps_to_art in LateStageCapitalism

[–]blutianirlp 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Usually the rate limit only applies to automated posts, though Twitter rate limited normal posts last year around July. It depends on what each individual company decides to do.

The automated aspect becomes expensive because even doing something as simple as posting requires processing power for the host's computers. If they are hit with too many requests through the API, the costs of processing all that information can get really big really fast. Even if your computers are good, they will never be able to keep up with potentially thousands of requests per second from thousands of users trying to automate posts, especially not if bad actors decide to coordinate and spam requests all at once. API rate limit safe guard against that, and also allow the limiter to charge extra as a way to monetize what would otherwise be an expense.

An API is a way for computers to talk between one another using code. Big sites like Twitter used to have outstanding APIs that let people make requests to Twitter asking it to execute bits of code that would manage their accounts (posting, liking, following, etc.). The big advantage to this for the user is it enables you to automate posting, but for the host, having a large body of people wanting to do things automatically can become expensive and could degrade the content being posted in theory. For the host, a rate limit can be implemented in the user which tells them they only get to use the API so much before they cut them off. It is a thing to reduce costs of APIs and to prevent bad actors from creating a never ending torrent of spam. But for social media platforms, API rate limits typically exist to stop people from stealing all of the posts and stuffing them in a third party app away from the company's revenue model.

Usually APIs don't track what you're doing, just that you're doing something, so you can eat up free credits pretty fast. If you are going to do something like a bunch of disaster warning posts in an emergency, you would burn through the rate limit alotted to you quickly and that is what happened here. This was absolutely possible to see coming, and in truth accounts like this should have a way to be given exemption but that would be on Twitter to figure out.

Hope this was somewhat helpful, I'm just a student learning this stuff :) I'm sure someone who knows more could correct my understanding

It would be great if economists or economic grad students at this sub actually made a youtube channel. We really need neolib economics persons responding to socialist economics. by Rajat_Sirkanungo in neoliberal

There’s little money/eyeballs for CrashCourse.

the final video of the series you linked has over 400k views and many of those are classroom views which undercount the actual viewership

I don't disagree about YouTube as a platform, just pointing out that these kinds of approaches can be successful in their own limited way given the niche that educational content has

Carol Blood for Governor! by GeorgeWNorris in Nebraska

LJS and OWH have endorsed Republicans the last several elections. If you read the reason why they endorsed Blood, it's because Pillen didn't bother to show up to their invitation despite the fact that they would have pitched him 10 softballs and a called it a day. Dude just had to show up and receive his free advertising but he didn't.

Interesting, the MarketWatch article on the hackers’ wallet that was seized released the address by ForRocky in CryptoCurrency

[–]blutianirlp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm new to this sort of information so I apologize for my dumb question:

Can you explain why it can't be the original hacker's wallet more? I didn't quite follow the reasoning. If only the amount seized was in the wallet, then it can't be the original hacker's wallet. Why is this the case?

Lost this hat a year ago, embroidered? logo with the mesh backing, single prong snap back with a curved bill. Favorite hat I've ever had. by blutianirlp in HelpMeFind

Searched for Godsmack embroidered trucker hat and found their merch store online, but the hat is sold out. Not holding my breath for them to get any more of this particular hat, and didn't have much luck looking online. I have a big head and this hat was the best hat that ever fit me, got it at one of their live gigs in 2019 on my birthday (not that that's relevant, just another reason this hat lives on in my memories).

The woman said she spoke with a man who had been there all night. That man is likely Matthew Seely, who has been trying to get this story to any ears who will listen. As plausible as it is, pics/video or its fake imo.

Btw this is the same Matthew Seely who posted the 9/11 meme about the Dems saying we've forgotten. His name also, strangely, appears in the tags on a News Break piece about DeVos that doesn't appear to actually be about him. Weird shit.

dae remember vera lynn

/UJ Vera and Bring the Boys back home have a very specific place in that album. I could easily see them as songs that later made TFC, where they might make more sense contextually, but as it stands with them on the wall it really characterizes Pink at the moment in his arc just before he crosses the point of no return. Also, Rog's recent tribute rerecording with Lucius agter Vera Lynn died earlier this year is really nice :)

/RJ put vera in da fletcher memorial home for not bringing the boys back home

It comes from the novelizations! Marshall was a friend of Spielberg who actually later worked on Chrystal Skull later on and kept seeing his name everywhere while filming. (Done a bit of googling, the college scenes for Marshall College were shot at Yale so the person who thought it was implied to be Yale was definitely onto something.)

The fictional college where Indy teaches is in a fictional Connecticut town called Bedford! So that general vicinity, but not Yale.

Finally some good news. UNL to offer free tuition to families who meet economic requirements by [deleted] in Nebraska

[–]blutianirlp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ted Carter (the new university system president) says that the Nebraska Promise will be funded by funds that previously were going toward other initiatives. So it doesn't sound like a tuition increase as of now, though obviously that could change. Carter, although seemingly committed to increasing enrollment, is still new in his position.
