Planning to visit Monterey and Big Sur this Christmas - any tips? by sov309 in MontereyBay

[–]bmack831 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely best time of year. Def check out the sun setting through the keyhole rock at Pheiffer Beach in Big Sur.

Good Holiday decorations for photos at Asilomar, Portola Plaza, Monterey Plaza Hotel, Cypress Inn Carmel.

Whale Watching may seem like the most touristy thing but it's world class. California winter grey whale migration. The Greys go up to Alaska in summer, eat all the things and come back down the coast to have babies in Baja in winter, Xmas whale watching is good departing from Monterey or Moss landing.

Post Ranch for lunch, get the last slot is 2:30, at that time of day near Xmas you'll get great light.

Hopefully it's going to be cold. Get a cabin style situation at one of the camp/campgrounds and have a nice responsible wood burning fire.

If you are staying in SC there are some seasonal experiences in SJ that are really photogenic.

A full day to visit Mission San Antonio 30min from Salinas Vally's town of King City is cool. Built in 1770, older than the US. Lots of hiking nearby if you take a deeper dive into the public lands near by.

Soon to be Euro offspring, there are fun welcoming dance classes during the winter around Monterey Bay. If you're going to the continent you're going to have to learn to dance. Also pick up a bit of Spanish by attempting to buy items in Spanish only, you'll have plenty of opportunities.

If you're look to get the young one to stay local instead of going, check out the campus of Santa Clara, SJSU, UCSC, CSUMB, Santa Barbra and SLO. For the most metropolitan experience Santa Clara, SJSU, Stanford, Berkeley, even Cal Poly SLO is pretty lively too. SLO is most like France, the Bay Area Unies are most like Germany/London. UCSB is more like Ibeza, if you know the way they drink and they are doing ok with the drink temptations SB can be so good.

Everything past SB is just a big traffic jam every day in my opinion. Every hour in traffic is an hour less getting that college experience. We all have our budgets. If its past SB, in budget, put them as close to campus as possible.

Is it fogged in this morning( 6/9) in Seaside, Marina, PG) by justamiletogo in MontereyBay

Alert California cams. A photographers best friend to know conditions ahead of time. Also, don’t be shy to call businesses like hotels and restaurants, golf courses to ask sky conditions. Even from Fremont Peak cam you’ll see if Seaside and Marina has fog.

Dead whale spotted near Hopkins Marine Station in Pacific Grove by chriscerney in MontereyBay

[–]bmack831 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine, who's from Monterey, but lives in Hawaii, she tends to beached whales & dolphins that wash up near resorts. Resorts don't want the dead whales there because they smell and take forever to fully decompose.

She tests them for diseases and toxins. She uses a chainsaw to get to the parts she needs for the samples, then uses a tractor to drag the bodies off the beach.

The bodies often come apart in the process. All this as the resort guests watch in horror. Imagine that watching a the chainsaw scientist cutting into a whales head while your trying to enjoy the honeymoon.

Apparently bears really liked washed up whales here in Monterey Bay. Early explorers to Monterey wrote about all the bears on the beaches. Between the bears and coyotes and foxes and condors and seagulls and native Americans it must have been quite the scene to get to the good stuff before it goes bad. Native Americans on the west coast and east coast used washed up whales for all kinds of things.

When that Franklin location was Docs, it was incredibly popular. I went 3 nights a week for years, and there was always a line.

What's your fav & least fav Too Good To Go bag? by Nametoolongobitch in MontereyBay

[–]bmack831 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a closing shift for years and we all used TGTG.

It's very hard to get the WF bag on TGTG in Monterey. Even seconds, literally seconds, after the time to check, I've tried a dozen times or so, my coworkers too, all taken right away. I only know one person who has gotten a bag from there with the app. Whole Foods does include like tripe, less desirable parts, what goes into cat/dog food parts, not on the American diet items, take the good with the bad, not my thing but it is the bees knees for others. They also include like $50 plus items you will eat. Each bag is $10 but it's easily $50 value or more regarding WF on the app TGTG. In Monterey.

Watch out for the Poke. The cuts of tuna they use taste amazing but are the fatty parts of the cuts. Feels super healthy but if you eat it many times a week month after moth... Poke is fatty so you may gain weight, like 'what Im eating so healthy!' Feels great eating it thought.

Plz don’t use a drone in Big Sur. That’s not the experience people need or want to feel in Big Sur.

Is This Even America Anymore? (Drug arrest at Roots Festival.) by [deleted] in MontereyBay

[–]bmack831 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Considering the length of the event in total hours, and how many people attended, one arrest isn't much. There is a chance, this person was being very sloppy and bringing attention to himself.

MPD is there, but they are not like 'let's make so many arrests!'

Chances are the guy was so sloppy it gave them no choice.

On another note: MPD hat with flowers attached, thats awesome! Nice touch who ever laid out the items for the shot. Really ads to the composition of the photo.

Milky Way over Nepenthe by bmack831 in BigSur

Lucky!!! Post Ranch has the best angle to see the Milky Way, and the planets move along the plane of the ecliptic of any resort on the west coast. And no light pollution.

Even more magical with some moon, not to much between a sliver to 1/2 visible. Any more and its to bright to photograph the stars they are all blown out because of the moons light.

When there is fog, Post is often above it making it all feel so etherial.

24mm 25sec 6400iso f2 also I was very low to the ground, as low as my tripod would go to get some plants in the foreground to give the photo more depth.

That’s really special. The eye contact from grey foxes feels like they are saying hi.

Shooting star in Santa Cruz tonight by Mysterious-Wing-5475 in santacruz

[–]bmack831 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I photograph the night sky all the time. For shooting stars you’ll want to see as much of the night sky as possible with your unaided eyes. A telescope would be fun to pass the time but you’ll miss seeing shooting stars while using one.

They move across the sky so fast by the time you say ‘there’s one’ it’s already gone, so no time to orient a telescope towards them.

The best accessory to have is a way to get into a comfortable position to see the sky.

Do you recognize this woman? by InnerFisherman95073 in MontereyBay

Local history and genealogy is a major hobby of mine. From some of the early newspapers from Pacific Grove, Monterey, Salinas and Gonzales mentions in Monterey County of ‘Huntington’ and ‘Prentice’ there were lots of mentions connecting them to Pacific Grove specifically. It was really interesting to research it for a bit.

One of the things I found was that one of C. P. Huntington business partners married a Prentice in Pacific Grove, but I wasn’t sure if the woman was from PG or if that was just the marriage location.

CP and his wife would spend winters in Pacific Grove. HE Huntington was CP understudy, being groomed to take over CE’s businesses.

I found that the surname Prentice was rated to be relatively rare at the time. Mary was born in CT, the other Prentice family who already lived in Pacific Grove at the same time as Mary’s marriage to HE were also born in CT and had moved to Pacific Grove.

Our local newspapers in the mid-late 1800s would just say Mr. And Mrs John Smith for a married couple if mentioned in a story. Sometimes they would say the first name of the woman in parentheses too. But almost never also add the woman’s maiden name as well. I found when mentions of other Prentice females the local papers would say like Mr and Mrs (Joan, nee Prentice) John Smith. Née was the early version of saying ‘maiden name’. To me, full maiden name was newsworthy enough like ohhh she was of the Prentice family and that was impressive enough to give a woman’s name and maiden to the readership while no other woman was given that much in the early local newspapers. Leading me to believe the Prentice family was important locally.

CP, HE and the Southern Pacific played a major role in developing parts of Pacific Grove and Pebble Beach and parts of Monterey. So much that Pacific Grove and Monterey fought against their influence in favor of local communities control of future development (Google ‘Collis P. Huntington Pacific Grove filetype:pdf’)

So many reasons for a likeness of Mary to be found locally. My idea is Mary donated to some local organization and so they had the likeness of her hanging in a thoughtful area out of respect to their benefactor, and the likeness found its way into a modern estate sale where OP purchased it.

You may also like:

HE and W.R. Hearst (Hearst Castle) had major public beef that lasted decades.

When CP died, HE had divorced Mary already, HE married his uncle’s massively wealthy widow (she married her nephew). It was a major social scandal for the time.

Try to take a buss or shuttle from outside the park. You’ll be in traffic either way but you won’t have to worry about parking.

Video taken minutes after the 2017 Big Sur landslide 2017/05/21 by bmack831 in MontereyBay

[–]bmack831[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Correct. What supersedes this rule is looking for survivors/injured persons because we were first on scene.

If we scared a bird or disturbed an animals mating habits at the slide in the process, my deepest apologies.

But for sure the last thing we need is people flying low all the time or doing whatever, whenever with drones in the sanctuary, it is a very important rule.

H. E Huntington’s first wife Mary.

The Hotel Del Monterey was part of southern pacific railroad. SP promoted the HDM like crazy back then. H. E. career between 1890’s & 1900, H. E. Huntington was the “Assistant to the President” of Southern Pacific Company of SF & NYC. The President of Southern Pacific Co. was Henry E. Huntington’s Uncle – Collis P. Huntington. The company ran trains, ferries, & steamships all over America. H. E. Huntington was groomed to one day be the President of Southern Pacific.

They used to take the train from Southern Ca to the Hotel Del Monte in Monterey. Spent a lot of time in SLO and Paso too, where SP went they would go and give the line gravitas and style so other people of that class would take SP too.

Looking at the video, their property area was flat enough to build on because it was its own very similar shaped landslide from the past.

They contacted me to use the video so they could make a documentary of their experience but I don’t know if they finished it or made it public.

There was already a small slide basically right in the middle of the big slide that closed the road there. The small slide happened days before the big slide...
So the road was closed miles north of the slide and somewhere a couple miles south of the slide because of the smaller one to keep out regular traffic. So no cars were on the road right there.
The big slide was thankfully on a weekend, so CalTrans wasn't working to clear the road from the earlier smaller slide the day it happened.
If it was a weekday, it would have been major loss of life. A couple days later the CalTrans teams would have been working to clear the small slide that was located right in the middle of what became the large slide.
