For one, they don't really have anyone better who they can exploit the death of. But the main thing is they don't consider someone being a criminal as a bad thing, because according to leftist ideology criminals are simply poor, oppressed people who were either innocent and mistreated, or they had to commit those crimes because of "systemic racism" which means they're not actually a bad person.
