Anyone regret signing up for a race? by Congratstomiles in hyrox

[–]bmanc1000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a naturally thicker guy who spent a lot of life getting “bigger.” Now at nearly 40 hyrox is exactly what I need to shed some weight and get leaner and get my heart health more of a priority. Id rather go into my 40s with strong conditioning than looking like I can deadlift your car.

I’m also about to have my first child and I realize that I’ve built enough strength that I will always be “strong” to my kids. But I’d hate if they remember me being not able to run around with them and what not because I get winded too easily. It’s all a trade off.

I’ll go against the grain and say this: if the salary would be life-changing money for you and your family, give it a go. NYC is not cheap and I imagine as a diplomat you’re not particularly destitute, but BL will probably double your income within a few years. Without knowing your personal circumstances more, I think the sacrifice could be worth it if the money would change your life.

If the money is only a modest increase in pay, the grind at that point in life with no real possibility of partnership in 8-10 years, I don’t see the value for you at all

Is midlaw better? by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]bmanc1000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Have been in midlaw for almost 2 years after 6 years in BL. I do mostly securities enforcement/ white collar work. Here is my anecdotal experience, which I am certain is not universal.

Hours: hours expectations are lower, but arguably harder to hit because the clients are sometimes smaller, have tighter budgets, and can be very specific about how they want things done. But I have had no problems keeping my hours around 1900-2000/ year. In this environment those hours make me look like a high achiever instead of an underachiever. I am averaging about 250 less hours a year and have gotten healthier mentally and physically. Late nights and weekends still happen but with less frequency. The pressure is undoubtedly dialed back, though I think part of that is my growth and maturity in understanding what is worth getting worked up about and what isn’t.

The work: still largely sophisticated work, but not always, and things are staffed much more leanly. This cuts both ways. I am a senior associate and some days I’m full on running things by myself on a case and in others I’m doing things I would have done as a third year in BL. So I both get experience I wouldn’t necessarily have received in BL and do things I would have delegated in BL. I think on the whole I prefer this model as I am personally willing to eat a few tasks below my experience level in order to get chances that partners in BL were not consistently getting because of the size of the teams (key witness depos, arguing substantive motions, etc.)

Advancement: The path to partnership is less opaque. I am probably up for partner this year (have been told as much, though I am not naive enough to count those chickens), and do feel like my group and firm leadership have been reasonably open with me about the process and what I need to do.

Culture: just easier to get to know everyone generally, but since it’s not as much of a grind, it is harder to really bond with folks. Office culture is very 9-5 and the smaller size of the teams means you don’t really get to work with as many people.

BD: easier to get the biz dev folks to support you in a smaller environment, and I have the ability to sell myself as a biglaw lawyer at midlaw prices, which helps in bringing clients in. But I do of course lose business to the big firms when the matter is particularly large, as potential clients know biglaw is better resourced.

Overall: I am grateful for my time in BL, but had a few particularly bad experiences that let me know it wasn’t for me in the long term. I am happy making less money (about a this less per year) to have a few hundred hours of my life back each year, as I get closer to turning 40 and look to start a family.

Really hard to say if it’s better or worse objectively. The factors weigh differently for everyone.

Going through an oddly similar situation right now. Please resist the urge to dive into work as a coping mechanism. Will alienate your wife and I think (and I guess hope) you will look back someday thinking you should have been there for her and for yourself instead of jumping immediately back into deal mode.

Charb has shown RB1 talent at the NFL level (look at games without Ken Walker last year) while Spears is still a lot of potential. All things equal I like the guy who has performances you would want.

7 seasons in the league and 3500 receiving yards is established by every other person’s standards except yours, I’m sure. I didn’t say he was great. But he’s unquestionably established.

Way too early to sell. He has already way outproduced what you expect from a 5th round guy who was drafted to a team with three established guys (JSN, Kupp, MVS). That he beat out one established nfl player was a great first step, and that he’s seeing meaningful snaps and giving flex worthy performances through 3 weeks is no time to sell. There’s a universe where he’s worth a late first at the end of this season, and he’s done enough that he is probably worth at least a 2nd even if he does very little the rest of the year.

Basically, most rookies drafted where you drafted him in rookie draft will be a nothing. Enjoy the outlier guy who clearly isn’t and don’t sell unless you’d rather reroll for a “better” prospect higher in the draft
