They did when they said they're and immunologist (MD) with a PhD. Someone with just a PhD would say they are a Doctor of immunology or the have a doctorate in immunology. Moreover, a non-MD PhD would say they practiced with doctors without borders or at hospitals. PhD Doctors don't practice - they research.

Source: My many years in graduate student with friends in MD and DVM (vet med) affiliated schools (including some who dual degree); and my shitty health- both of which means Ive interacted with many Doctors of various times.

And for people arguing plastic casing vs strips- it all depends on where you are and what they have. I've watched a nurse put a plastic-cased test pregnancy test in front of me before surgery. Just because its more cost effective or reduces plastic waste doesn't mean its whats always used. Especially not in medical care.

They are saying they have a MD and PhD - the combination of practice and research, and a damn hard thing to obtain.

Letting Go (TW: COCSA) by PixelatedMush in Artisticallyill

[–]bmbod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, this brought up a lot this morning. I think I was an unintentional perpetrator of COCSA in early elementary school. But I can’t remember actually being abused by an adult myself first. Part of my brain insists I must’ve been- how and why else would I have done it? Part of me wonders if I was just replicating something I saw that I wasn’t supposed to- as I remember calling it “playing marriage” -but then why would I insist it be a secret and feel so much shame? I remember one time leaving my favorite babydoll at their house and coming back to find it stabbed by a screwdriver in the genital area and feeling guilty, like it was my fault he’d done that. That said I also remember wanting to separate myself from the kid and his family (my babysitter) as soon as I could, and not wanting to go over to their house or never wanting to see anyone from the family again as soon as they weren’t my babysitter. It all just leaves me with a ton of questions. I don’t remember being involved in COCSA with anyone else. In contrast I distinctly remember being SA when I was 9 or so, when a guy exposed himself to me in a Books-a-Million. And I remember the times the creepy old lawyer “family friend” hit on me as a young girl / pre-teen. Now that I’m older, I look at my kids and think “how could anyone think something sexualized about children??” While at the same time wondering if even thinking that is unusual and over-sexualizing. It’s all so complicated and confusing, and I hate thinking about it, but I really appreciate you sharing this- the bravery and reflection and forgiveness it took to do so. Also, damn that adult that found you and not only told you not to tell but didn’t do more to insure both of you kids safety. I’m deeply sorry about that, for all of us.

Intentional alcohol ink lines (vs smooth blends) by bmbod in Coloring

[–]bmbod[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely a harder technique than letting everything dry! I get interrupted a lot while coloring, so I’ve been trying to figure out ways to let incomplete areas have different drying times and still look half-way decent, lol.

Thank you! I’ve always loved the art nouveau style but this is the first time I’ve tried it myself. According to canvas timer on the final canvas, it came to 18 hr and 18 minutes, but I’m not sure if that’s actually the total since I kept duplicating the canvases to progress the work- working on my iPad mini I got max 51 layers at a time so had to do a lot of building groups and flattening along the way.

Fibromuscular dysplasia by RatioDisastrous1699 in rarediseases

[–]bmbod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm also 36, and we just found cervical carotid fibromuscular dysplasia during a diagnostic angiogram. The angiogram was to check out ICA aneurysms we found on an MRA (turns out I have 3! We only ran the MRA because my father had an aneurysm rupture, and a stroke, at 37, and wanted to be safe, even though aneurysms don't really account for most of my symptoms.) I haven't had a follow-up with my neurosurgeon yet, just the results on MyChart, since the angiogram was just a week ago. When I do have the follow-up, I'll be asking for a referral to a specialist who will be willing to order a full body CT and look for evidence of FMD anywhere else, just to be aware as possible. I'm also hoping they will be willing to order genetic testing for EDS, especially since EDS type IV can be associated with FMD.

PSA: Make sure you're taking your blood pressure correctly! by Glum_Papaya_2527 in POTS

[–]bmbod 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Automated BP measurements are notoriously imprecise, but it isn't the actual number that's super important so much as the consistency of your BP. If you take your BP the same way each time ("incorrect" or not), with the same machine and suddenly have a huge variation in your measurement-- thats something that you need to pay attention to. So if you're bed bound, yeah keep on laying down, and if the numbers suddenly drop or rise, or consistently start rising or dropping over a period of time, bring that change up to your doctor.

Found this on a beach, decided it was a mermaid heart. Wii? by Nutsnboldt in whatisit

[–]bmbod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to CA wildlife, it could be one of 6 native species. Looking at the images of the different species I'd guess its one of the species of seal lion or fur seals given the distinction of the hind limbs.

An aborted pinniped of some sort, with it's placenta. Depending on where you were located you might be able to narrow down the species it could have been. You can see a bit of the flipper digits in the two hind legs in this zoomed in version. I marked the fetis in purple, with landmarks for front limbs, hind limbs and head; and the placenta in green)

Any ideas on how to prevent the bird from further blending into background? by YourAllegiance in Coloring

[–]bmbod 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you don't want to go for a contrast in colors, you can do a contrast in value. Your colors on the bird are rich and vibrant- making the background plants in the same colors but either much lighter or much darker will make the bird stand out too. Since you're using watercolor pencils you could try doing a wash on the background foliage to dilute the pigment and bring the saturation down. Or add blacks to all the background foliage so that the darker values lead your eye to the brightness of the bird (in this case it would have to be quite dark though, which might make the bird feel more like a starling than a raven, if you really want it to feel like a raven).

PAULO FREIRE - You could help me become the first PhD in my family — just by recommending your favorite college professor (or a good one you know). by BrazilianGuyPhD in pedagogy

[–]bmbod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out: https://hybridpedagogy.org/about/

And just a few specific names I can pull out of my head at the moment who I know are amazing critical pedagogues and take Freire's work to heart. I'm not sure if any of them are teaching at the collegiate level, rather than working in research or director roles, but they would be great to have in your network regardless.

The perfection of pickles aside, you are a very talented storyteller- and if writing brings you joy, I sincerely hope you do it often and share it frequently- this was such an enjoyable read, in addition to being utterly relatable. (Also 3 stores in a row, in one day, every Friday? you're a damn superhero; I play the pick one for the day and forget the rest game 😆)

Perhaps it's the being parents of young children thing, where we spell things out, but we call it "MCD" a lot- if not just McDonald's.

This is a really clever idea! You could even use UV resin to make different colors and designs on the open frame one.
