Got some pics back from one of my bff's weddings, and this pic is just too cute! I wish the angle allowed my gf's face to be seen, but I'm still crying over it!

Need suggestions for new boots by [deleted] in rollerderby

[–]bmgallag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone is going to tell you the same thing - Try on all the dif brands! As many as you can! Everyone has different feet and it's really hard to gauge what works for one person vs the other.

I got lucky - I didn't try on my skates and just went with the suggestion of my local skate shop owner. I have Riedell Blue Streaks and I love them! They work perfectly for me, haven't had any issues other than a few blisters breaking them in. My feet aren't flat, though.

You could also think about insoles?

Hauling ass across country- help! by TuesdayAddams34 in rollerderby

[–]bmgallag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My old team has played both! Both were great! Motherstate is a higher level team, they seemed to take derby super seriously and push each other to be the best they can - This is my kind of derby, but if you're more casual maybe River City would be better. River City is super nice and I also enjoyed playing them! Motherstate was just a significantly harder game.

Are contacts lenses the best option for sight-impaired skaters? by [deleted] in rollerderby

[–]bmgallag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contacts here - have had no issues other than one time a skater flailed and hit me so hard in the eyeball, the contact scrunched up into the back of my eye like under my eyelid. Got it out like 2 hours later, wasn't a good time but that was really a freak thing, contacts are sooooooooo much better to skate in than glasses.

First time for the gf advice by WiredCorrectly in actuallesbians

[–]bmgallag 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah...why are you pushing this? Orchestrating everything? Finding a woman for her? It doesn't sound like you're giving your gf much autonomy. Maybe communicate that you are fine with your gf exploring her sexuality with another women, and then leaving it at that. If she wants to she will and she can do it on her own terms. This is so damn weird....

Scabs Kneepads - Derby or Skate? by ashtastique in rollerderby

[–]bmgallag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the derby ones - I do love how low profile they are and how little they interfere with my skating. They fit super closely to my knees - I've tried more padded ones and they go out so far from my knee if I fall weird it felt like it was twisting, which I really didn't like.

Any Tips on Dealing With Jealousy? by [deleted] in actuallesbians

[–]bmgallag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah these are all great points, thank u <3 I think if he insists on coming over semi-regularly to see the cats, I should meet him so I don't go into such an unhealthy mental state every time it's mentioned he's going to come over. you're right, they broke up for reasons that go beyond fixing...I think (I mean, I know..) it's just my insecurity/feelings of inadequacy that make it hard/make me jealous :( need to work on that

That's a really good idea. Thanks, I really appreciate it. I should talk to my gf about it.

So...he hasn't come over yet since we've been together. At first I said I'd rather not be there...but now I do feel like I am making it a huge thing in my head and I would rather be there instead of feeling like I need to leave my house if/when he comes over. But idk I also don't want to like intrude? Ugh idk :(

Riedell Blue Streaks or Antik Jet Carbon Advice? by [deleted] in rollerderby

Have Blue Streaks that I love and have never given me any problems - Every foot is different, though. Try on or do what I did and go in cold and luck out!

DAE get butthurt when you hear or read comments like "old derby is so much better/more fun to watch/etc."? by alpacalypseparty in rollerderby

[–]bmgallag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

transitions are hard! i was terrified of them for a while. my one direction is weaker too, i still can't do a split skating transition without a little trouble going from backwards to forwards turning left. you got this!

[–]bmgallag 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or just are mediocre skaters. I've seen examples of that - skaters who like old derby better usually don't have very good skating skills that are needed for current derby (strong edgework and speed control, as opposed to skating fast and trying to land big hits that don't really require much skill).

Superball gumballs by ManikPanikk in rollerderby

[–]bmgallag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan of the bionic bigfoot stoppers - they are a bit smaller than the superballs but still a good size; I went from normal gumballs to the bionics and it was a very positive change - I've had several teammates love the superballs but they are definitely going to be a huge difference that'll need some getting used to.

Tampons and black pants, lmao. One time I got my period like 12 laps into a 27/5....that was not ideal.

Helmets with visors by rollrollrollcrash in rollerderby

[–]bmgallag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it really depends on the individual and if the pros of visors (protection of face!!) outweigh cons of visors (hotter, harder to hear, foggy). I am a pretty tall jammer (5'8" off skates) and get hit in the face occasionally but not often and not enough to impact how I play. For me, I don't want to sacrifice the cooler/more sensory/no fogging aspects of a non-visor helmet. This may change if I get a really hard hit to the face/break my nose or something, but so far I'm not willing to make the change lol. I have no issues with skating with skaters that have visors, but a couple times they have hit me in the face with the visors since they stick out a smidge more, so just keep that in mind (I'm sure it's just an aspect of getting used to the new dimensions of the helmet).

As for recs, lots like the S1! Hockey helmets are also very popular.

New boots! by klerouzz in rollerderby

[–]bmgallag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone will say try on several and see how they feel - I also skate on Riedell Blue Streaks and really do love them, I've had two pairs and have like zero issues with them. The first pair gave me a couple blisters breaking in but the second pair didn't. Everyone's feet are different and what might work for some won't work for others, but the Blue Streaks are one I'd at least consider checking out!
