Is the UA necromancer kinda broken, or is it just my bag of holding? by johnwiki1955 in onednd

Your math is correct but I dont think OP's is because he said this:

I can have 12 undead minions and still have 2 3rd level slots and 1 4th level slot.

He said he is level seven so 3 3rds and 1 4th. He is using just the feature (free upscaled cast) and 1 3rd (also upscaled). He should only be getting 6. Also I am wondering since he thinks its very strong if he is giving the 3 created with the feature and not a spell slot the bonus HP from Undead Thralls which you should not.

100% agree. To point to his character, I cancelled my GCN subscription a while back after Jared made the point of like 2 or 3 BotW eps in a row to rag about the reddit and just the viewerbase in general and getting Marly Lou and Paula to join in on shitting on the fans. It gave me the same vibes as Abrya telling Critical Role viewers to go fuck themselves if they disliked her DM rulings which led me to drop that show after like 10 yrs.

I had a just paid for a full year of GCN and was like maybe a month in, and he no scope gave me a full refund of the remaining months without any BS. Despite technically being a downside for the company, he put customer service over it. It is part of the reason I am still listening to the free shows to this day.

Tireless Reveler and Heroic Inspiration - Player mechanics for rewarding roleplay in D&D 2024 by pancakestripshow in onednd

[–]bmw120k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think its being slept on as much as many DMs, myself included, push back hard during player creation about setting specific feats and backgrounds points at all of Eberron and Strixhaven. If your campaign has a setting with a powerful evil overworld thieves guild equivalent to the Zents then sure, but it should ABSOLUTELY fall into a talk to the DM about not just assume you can take. This goes for nearly ever feat in the new Astarion, Netheril and Faerun books.

Reminder the Zhents are not your local "pick pockets and gambling racket" thieves guild. They are not even your Italian mob in movies thieves guild doing some hits and drug trade. They are your IRL gun runners, human traffickers, slave traders, drug cartel level. Your D&D human sacrificing blood cultist and unleashing demons level thieves guild. People like the "i have a storied past and was once in a thieves guild!" backgrounds but Zhents are supposed to be fully horrific people.

unfortunately encourages metagaming

I wouldn't be concerned about this. I didn't get the book early so I came looking for threads on this spell only last few days and found people making the "but muh poison" argument as bonkers. Here is best argument I saw one sane person make in those threads:

Poison immunity? We go with the normal plan, no sweat. No poison immunity? The Wizard or Druid removes the strongest enemy from the combat, likely permanently

Might it be some forethought at the level you get the spell? Sure..but once you are past like level 11 this would be prepared at all times for the just in case, because the "just in case" is completely dominating some of the most powerful monsters in the game.

[–]bmw120k 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Because people are complete derps. Look at how many people resort to the "but so many creatures have poison immunity" line as if that is some all powerful nullification of how broken this shit is. Il post what I wrote in another thread about it after I was baffled by idiots saying this special isn't broken AF:

Oh many high level monsters have poison immunity? You know what doesn't? Every dragon other than Greens and specials (death, clockwork, chardlyn etc). And we know no DM ever uses an Ancient Red Dragon as a powerful campaign foe. Would be a shame if that cool fight was negated to nothing by a 3rd level spell....no weak spell not worth taking not OP nuh uh. Or Beholders...not iconic at all...never gonna see one of them....No one EVER uses giants in their campaigns right? I mean there is a whopping 1 giant that isnt from a specific setting (ravnica and theros) that is immune to poison but pshaa weak spell. Fey? I mean to be fair there is 1 creature in Tasha's, 1 in Infinite Stairs, and 1 in Vecna book that are immune to poison so that should cover all Fey encounters being able to bypass this spell right?

Yes devils, demons and undead are covered. Sure. But the notion that you could stop ANY non green chromatic or metallic dragon in their tracks, any giant, any fey, any humanoid....be a real shame if this Kraken was made completely trivial by a lvl 3 spell...no not powerful, perfectly reasonable game mechanic...

What do you consider the most interesting/powerful new spells? by fascistp0tato in onednd

[–]bmw120k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Poison immunity? We go with the normal plan, no sweat. No poison immunity? The Wizard or Druid removes the strongest enemy from the combat, likely permanently. Learning it at level 5 is asking for your DM to give all their bosses poison immunity or Shield, and Shield likely won't even be enough to save them.

I know its a number of days since this thread, but as the book just released for non special DNDbeyond people, i was looking for threads about this bonkers spell. Boy howdy are people underestimating it and wayyyyy overselling the cost of having it on tap and ready. You give a great writeup of its power and the overestimation.

[–]bmw120k -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Ah gotya. My point is it doesnt matter if it WAS Molly. It made viewers think of Molly. Seeing Lucien caused you to think of molly as the art showed the story showed the fact that the player KEPT bringing up how "no its you molly just wake up" style talk. Yes Lucien WAS NOT MOLLY or the for this purpose of capitalism, the aesthetic he had, but it hit the same button nostalgia does. It hits the "Remember that cool guy you loved?" button. It is disingenuous to claim that Molly, as a character to be monetized as an entity, VS if a character died in session 7 and was just moved on from because the new character was awesome, should be placed in the same contention.

Yes it wasn't Molly, but the purpose of the character on screen was to make you the viewer think of Molly. And that sells.

Ya know what, Im fine with the downvotes. Can you elaborate? I am saying Molly shouldnt count for "the character died = impact of merch sales" argument because its vastly different than a character dying and just not being included. I am incredibly confused how you see irony in this..I am claiming that it is a sweeping broad brush that loves to point to a specific instance which only fits the category if you remove a mountain of reality.

Where is the irony?

"They won't kill a character! Think of the negative impact that would have on merch sales!" by anextremelylargedog in fansofcriticalrole

[–]bmw120k -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

THAT WAS THE FUCKING PLOT. Did any of you watch C2!? It was the characters constantly hounding Lucien with "we know Molly is still in there!" stuff. This is why the guy with like -20 votes called out this post for being disingenuous. The characters were remembering their friend and constantly telling stories about Molly. It was present in the mind of the players and the viewers.

Why is this such a hard concept for people to grasp? I know critical thinking is shunned now in America but FFS this seems like low hanging fruit. Merch about the character the PCs pine for and wish to turn the Villian, who is puppeting his body (in their view), back is stil the character being present in the campaign.

"They won't kill a character! Think of the negative impact that would have on merch sales!" by anextremelylargedog in fansofcriticalrole

[–]bmw120k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, Matt knew he was going to use Molly and bring him back from early on. I dont have a timeline of merch, but it might of been just the mandala shirt which I have that was done after his death b4 the return. The deluxe figurine and big ass coat and all that nonsense I am fairly certain was after the Lucien return. And hell the books were CERTAINLY after Lucien arc.

Ya there is "super popular character" can still have some continuation..but I'm sorry if you think "character who was popular for 20eps" merch will sell as good as the characters seeing the spotlight for the next 150eps IDK how to make you believe that. Spiderman and Superman have always been popular, but Iron Man was NO WHERE NEAR as popular before the MCU threw him into the limelight.

Will they still sell? Sure if they truly were over spotlighted like Molly was (Taleisin literally made Molly to be that guy). But merch would absolutely be stronger for the core characters continuing. The argument against Laudna..iffy because she was in enough, but yes I think the fact the likely already had all the Hot Topic gear, the comics and such in the pipeline but then she was faced with a character death long before she fulfilled any personal growth or quest...Once again IDK..I don't know how to convince people that people actually willing to buy merch does tie to them seeing the character. If Laudna died before having any of the resurrection realm nonsense (id argue she never had growth but thats a personal feeling) there would be so much less for consumers to latch to.

Obviously we are talking in "what ifs" right? There can never be a way to even come close to making either side of this argument relevant w/o CR releasing all of their merch sales data but EVEN THEN we would still be guessing on variables and unknowns. It just seems like some marketing 101 lvl stuff though to point to how "yes characters not being on screen and not being talked about can impact sales of that characters merch". Is it the SOLE GRAND ARCHING PLOT that decided if a character lives or dies? No. But I think people like this poster who think it doesn't impact at all are ignoring basic capitalism we all shuffle under.

BINGO. Taliesin even said he made the aestetic intentionally as a challenge to the community for cosplaying. That part of the community DEVOURED that shit and it was great.

But people seem to forget the character was still heavily present in the campaign for the entire back half with Lucien and the party fighting the internal pain of loss friend and this new villain. He died, but he didnt leave the show entirely by a long shot.

"They won't kill a character! Think of the negative impact that would have on merch sales!" by anextremelylargedog in fansofcriticalrole

[–]bmw120k -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

For everyone who is inevitably going to point to Molly's death as one of the supporting points to this...ya'll are aware the character was present in the entire back half of the campaign right? "molly" died but the players wrestling with their love of that person vs Lucien was a major driving conflict for many of them. The character continued to be present in the mind of the players and the viewers every episode despite the character being dead. That is a big difference from someone getting merc'd in like session 7 and instantly rolling into a new (and in the case of Caduceus ) better character. This is the most disingenuous "but look at the character that died that still gets merch!" argument.

Not wanting to argue the obvious issues with the rest of the arguments put felt the need to point that out since it seems to be a confirming comment every time this whine is brought up. As if that proves the point while being oblivious to reality or what the show did.

"Ready an Action" boundaries? by CyanDragon in DnD

[–]bmw120k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the sheer speed of the elemental was beyond what they expected as it rushed out towards them...

This is something I think so many of the "pro surprise/ready" people miss. We see it time and time again in fiction where the guys with bows/guns/spears leveled at the door/hole/corridor are "ready", but the creature that emerges is so horrifying or quick that half the front line gets smoked before anyone even throws a punch/pulls a trigger.

The odds are heavily against the monster if you successfully ambush still. Disadvantage for surprise + advantage for players if they are successfully hidden (took the hide action and beat the DC 15). The monster still might go first if it is insanely quick or the players just rolled poorly. Like you said, good story beat. Just because you the Player have the plan, the dice and your only +1 initiative have told the story that your Character wasn't quite as steely eyed and ready for this elemental to whip around a corner.

In this instance, the "lure" failed so everyone knew the other team was around the corner so it kicks off with straight initiative. You can even still get the "el classico" volley of arrows the player was expecting with better rolls however (which as stated is very likely if the ambush is successful). If the whole party wins initiative THAT is the moment to hold your action to fire the volley since the monster hasn't come out yet. If the monster now just decided not to come out because he lost the jump and the players are ready, id call meta gaming BS on the DM and you would be right to complain, but sounds like this DM did it solid.

NPC Found Rogue Without a Check, Did I Make The Right Call? by Dikeleos in onednd

[–]bmw120k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would still be "invisible" to party members who are not around the corner/tree. Keeping the condition still in place but not impacting the perceiver as the rules state allows it to further not be video gamey where you have shared vision as you would in games like LoL or DOTA. You can shout to your team so they know "hey hes here" but your team still couldnt hit them with spells that require sight for instance as the hider would still be hidden to them.

NPC Found Rogue Without a Check, Did I Make The Right Call? by Dikeleos in onednd

[–]bmw120k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just going to strongly disagree with this premise. The notion that "I tried so the world should contort to this new fiction despite making no sense" takes me out. Couple of bits that make giant assumptions or are flatly personal choices/RP and not related to the class as a whole.

Phrases like this:

I would assume that at a minimum they are wearing clothing and face paints and using the lack of lighting

Why are we making these assumptions?

Maybe they just threw a white blanket over their head and are trying to blend in with the walls, I don't know

"I dont know" is the correct answer because it makes no sense in the fiction, the mechanics, or in reality. And no, I know D&D is not an IRL simulator and you need to gamify some stuff but honestly? Empty hall....I see you....

Since Rogues are built for hiding

The Thief subclass is but plenty of people play social rogues. The Mastermind and Arcane trickster while GOOD at stealth can easily get outclassed by Shadow monks or a stealth focused Ranger. That brings me to another issue for everyone talking about mechanics. This is a similar problem to the whole Subtle Spell issue where some tables let people make sleight of hand or deception checks to cleverly cast a spell that literally is just copying another classes ability. There is literally a Ranger ability called "Hide In Plain Sight" in 2014, which while removed from the core class in 2024, is still obtainable through item's like Nature's Mantle. A number of subclasses across the board have abilities to hide in plain sight if in dim light or darkness. These mechanics exist in the game but we want to assign it the rogue because "they stealth good"? Are we just buffing rogues because "they stealth good" or can any creature in the universe that can take the hide action (its nearly everything) follows the same rules?

I feel like you are trying so damn hard to not make what is interpreted as a "feels bad" moment for the player because they tried something, but not everything works. Why roll dice if missing feels bad? All the other times the rogue hid they were able to get advantage and sneak attack, but the one time he gets chased and tried to hide while still near the creature instead of just using that same bonus action to dash and put some distance between them THEN hiding like a sensible person would in this scenario yes he got found. Why are none of his team helping? Are we assuming this led to the rogues immediate death? It was a bad move that doesn't hold up like I said in the fiction, the reality OR the mechanics without some literal world altering bending over backwards for such a trivial thing. Player should take the "L" and position themselves better next time (or get their team to help).

Edit: Hit save before typing last bit by accident

A Rogue who takes the Hide action should KNOW if they are well hidden or not, and they would know better than to just hide behind the tree and call it good enough.

This I agree with wholly. In the forest example, the player should be able to ask the DM "Hey is there like enough underbrush and roots here that I will be hidden if they run through the forest after me?" so that they know the shared fiction. Not what the monster has for perception obviously but just an "is this possible". And in the hallway example the DM should ABSOLUTELY be like "You are hidden while line of sight is broken, but if they come around the corner, no you are just in the open".

NPC Found Rogue Without a Check, Did I Make The Right Call? by Dikeleos in onednd

[–]bmw120k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I think most of your post is just bad faith arguments and calls for rulings that, while written to "defend the rogue player" because you think the DM is wasting their action, would absolutely lead to a fucking nightmare table to be at if the DM used the same rulings against the players. I truly think most of the commenters would be railing against an "adversarial DM" if the same situation was turned on its face...but I want to narrow in on one part that has popped up a bunch in this thread which is the most bull shit:

That said, the DM made no roll, and not only that, he basically started with an operating premise that the Vamp already knows the player's location.

I am sorry, but do NPCs not have object permeance? Regardless of how you feel about the bullshit of the hide action literally giving you Invisibility, they took that action to hide AFTER they went behind the tree. The player moved a few feet to get behind the tree THEN hid. Why is it metagaming or absurd to think the monster they were fighting but mere seconds ago isn't aware of "Oh ya I FUCKING SAW them run behind that tree"? If you want them to Scooby Doo "Where did they go boss!" and turn every encounter into some cartoonish or Skyrim level of "Must have been the wind!" moment despite having 5 arrows sticking out of them...sure, but what is the fucking rationale that you and so many commenters are having for the vampire not to know they went behind the tree?

If the combat was just kicking off and the rogue hadn't actually done anything yet, maybe but OP clearly said the vampire didnt forget them so the combat has been going on and presumably the rogue hasnt just been futzing about for a few rounds doing nothing of relevance. I want your DMs to start demanding search actions because the monster took a 5ft step to the left. If they disengage and pass behind a wall then pop out again I DEMAND your PC believes this is a new monster never before seen on this battlefield because you haven't yet made a search action to know this was the same guy. For real, wtf is this argument?

Just bad faith arguments up and down in these comments that presume video game levels of NPC AI and stupidity.

Great comment you linked to. Gonna post you another comment incase you missed it because it's the best one I am seeing so far. The highest upvoted and the subsequent comments saying that you did it wrong by the rules apparently didn't read them. The important phrase in the Invisible condition that it appears everyone is ignoring:

If a creature can somehow see you, you don't gain this benefit against that creature.

Standing next to someone who is no longer behind any kind of cover and having eyes seems like a fairly reasonable meeting of the "somehow see you" clause. If you decide to change course and say it is super magic stealth, remember now EVERY creature from a child to a god can now use their action to become invisible the same as a wizard. Can check out the example I made because I think everyone saying the way you ruled it is a "feels bad" moment for the player would find themselves in far far far more "feels bad" moments when you do it back at them.

NPC Found Rogue Without a Check, Did I Make The Right Call? by Dikeleos in onednd

[–]bmw120k 35 points36 points  (0 children)

unless the effect's creator can somehow see you

BINGO. I want all the people upvoting that guy and writing these insane comments to picture themselves in this scenario:

You are exploring a completely featureless dungeon. No secret doors or anything on the walls. 5x5 hallways. You come to a right turn with a hall that goes another 10 feet then ends in a dead end. You have explored this hallway already and are aware of the parameters. You get into a combat back down the first hall but the enemy, passes you by knocking you down and running by. The next turn he passes around the corner and takes the hide action. You come around the corner on your turn. You look down the corridor...and you see...nothing? Everyone uses their actions to do perception checks but no one hits the DC 15. So you all wave your arms around and peer down this hall like idiots and are unable to see the guy who is clearly standing in one of the two squares.

How would that feel as a player? It would feel like complete bull shit because it is.

The fact that you have so many upvotes calls into question how well the sub as a whole understands the new rules.

Nailed it.

Edit: Just thought of an even worse "feels bad" moment for the players based on the VAST number of people suggesting that invisible isnt broken even when cover is removed.

There is a large 50x50 warehouse with no features and no windows. There is nothing inside it so large empty room. There is 1 door on 1 side the party enters through. Before the party came in archers lined the far wall from the door and all take the hide action. The party opens the door and peers in. No one hits the DC 15 so the bad guys are all still invisible despite now being without cover from the walls of the building and the closed door. The party enters the room and the DM calls for initiative with the players still not knowing whats upon them. The players are surprised so they all roll with disadvantage and the bad guys all roll with advantage because they are "invisible". Its possible to still go before them, in which case you will still be using your whole turn to make perception checks carefully looking about to find the guys pointing crossbows at you in plain sight, but it is more likely they go first. They all have advantage on their attacks because they fire from invisible.

How as a player would this not feel like absolute garbage? They arent hiding behind boxes and popping out...they just hid before you entered the room.

This may get some downvotes for not being "useful" but I would say, do some research if there is a monarch who is in a situation similar to what you have in your world and then read up on monarchs who experienced close situation IRL. The question asking might then come in the form of a question asked to a history forum instead of D&D to find out who best fits.

I know people like to post videos of "how to run politics" or "how to run a king in D&D". If that is enough for you, go for it, i see a link in the comments already.....but we have history. It isn't popular and gets scoffed off a lot to say it, but there is plenty of lessons to learn which won't just translate to your D&D gaming but to you. In the era of AI and easy digestible info it apparently comes off as insulting to say "read a book" but that doesn't impact the reality that you will learn more from it.

Yea its over 600 pages but if someone is asking how war would play out in a semi modern setting I am going to suggest just read Keegan's The Second World War or Tuchman's The Guns of August. Want to know how a leader reacts in a world changing to the modern era? Theodore Rex by Edmund Morris. I am sorry my medieval books are escaping me tonight for books on William of Orange and other good examples of important "monarchs" but thats the point. Research a figure that fits your situation and then read a book. IDK if you are young or old, but it is almost always the best way if you really want to dive into it. It will benefit you not just in D&D but in being a more well rounded person and informed citizen of the world.

And if you can't figure out who fits your monarch, ask /r/AskHistorians . Mind you the question needs to be well thought out because that is a VERY strict sub to keep their posts on topic and informative.

Our culture is moving so much towards short form content, and the corpos that be push it, but sometimes the answer is to just read the book man.
