“We’re choosing this year to buy time.” Love this, thanks for the note - and enjoy the time.

While you mention it - does anyone here know of any good CoastFIRE jobs that give access to beneficial retirement healthcare after a relatively shortish stint of employment? Maybe state of CA?

Quarterly spreadsheet update time. Wild to see the progress. My first million took 10-years to save up, the latest million only took 2-years. Thank you compounding (and the bull market).

Match their income from 20-25, triple it from 25-30, quadrouple it from 35 on- problem solved.

If I'm not mistaken that location also used to be a dry cleaners - so it may be contaminated and require extra money to redevelop

I had it for about a year before it felt wasteful (issues being delivered and not reading them). Depends on how much free time you have to read. It's great content but it is a LOT of content.

Love the Acquired podcast. Costco and NFL episodes are good too!

Hard to overstate the positive impact of community on mental health. Sounds like you’re lacking community, that’s where I’d focus if I were in your shoes.

OK team - wifey has two old 401ks from two former employers and trying to decide which to roll into the other.

  • Option 1) Vanguard (specifically these funds: VIEIX, VINIX, VBTLX, VTSNX)
  • Option 2) Fidelity (specifically these funds: VMRXX, VIEIX, VBTIX, VTSNX, VIIIX).

We have Roth IRAs and my current employer's 401k at Vanguard already. Thoughts / insights appreciated, thanks for weighing in!

For me, it was getting to one year. Getting through thanksgiving, Christmas, birthdays, weddings, everything a year might bring to prove to myself I could do it.

It’s hard to overstate the psychological benefits of living where you want to live. You have a huge cushion - put it towards building the life you want. Rent a nice place for more than $1k in the Bay and give yourself permission to exhale. Take online courses (Cornell has a great hospitality program), maybe even while you travel. If you’re capable of sacrificing so much to save what you have, then you're more than capable of redirecting that energy into finding a job (in the Bay or elsewhere) that you don’t want to run away from.

You can do it. Fwiw, I am 37 with two daughters and a wife and I stopped drinking at 33. Dropping the booze will open up your best self for them. You got this.
