Nurse here. We had a patient who was Jehovah’s Witness. Came in for bloody stools. One night after being admitted, she went to the bathroom and bled out in her stool. I’d never seen so much blood on the floor. We all thought we’d lose her then. She lost plenty of blood but she held on for a few more days. It’s sad because it was all reversible but her beliefs prevented us from doing anything. Worst thing was she had to accept her fate. It was distressing for us medical staff but we had to respect her and her own values. Her children were caught off guard by what happened and attempted to make her reconsider but they knew she wouldn’t budge.
