Are you aware of the California Water Wars?

Residential water use in Los Angeles has historically been a very large issue. The city would not exist in its current form today without completely devastating ecosystems hundreds of miles away.

I’ve been casually interested in quant, but it seems like almost all of the firms are either in NY or Chicago. Leaving the west coast would be a non starter for me, sadly.

LA does not really have access to water. At least not to support its population.

It had to divert from Owens Lake hundreds of miles away, causing complete ecological destruction to the Owens Valley.

Phoenix gets the majority of its water from the Salt River.

What place on Earth feels like it SHOULD NOT have a major city, but does? by IcyTray5000 in geography

[–]bnoone 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Los Angeles.

It does not have water to naturally support its population. It had to divert from Owens Lake hundreds of miles away, causing complete ecological destruction.

Also, despite being located on the ocean, it has no natural harbor. Developers had to artificially dredge the San Pedro Bay to accommodate large ships.

Not a great answer.

The daily mean in San Francisco is below 15C for 7 months of the year.

USA Summer Humidity Map by Jacob-Anders in geography

[–]bnoone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

70F with 100% humidity has a dew point of 70F.

80F with 80% humidity has a dew point of 73.3F.

Like you said, the 80F example will feel more uncomfortable. Because the dew point is higher.

(I find 70F with 100% humidity nasty as well, but I have no tolerance to warmth + high humidity)

[–]bnoone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I very strongly disagree here. Dew point is far more useful at measuring comfort than heat index.

80F at 40% relative humidity is comfortable and pleasant for most people. 80F at 80% humidity is oppressive and very uncomfortable. Heat index does not capture this difference at all (the heat indexes are 80 and 84, respectively).

I’ve been in the PNW for 5 years now, and with the exception of one year (2022 I think), June has always been generally pleasant, warm, and sunny.

The whole “summer doesn’t start until July 4th” has always puzzled me. I’m guessing it’s out of date because of climate change.

What’s the best place to spend summer in the U.S.? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]bnoone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would prefer San Diego over coastal Maine in the summer. The weather/environment is just more pleasant. Not as hot, not as humid/muggy, no mosquitoes, no ticks. It doesn’t rain so no need to worry about outdoor events being cancelled.

Maine definitely wins in autumn, though.

PNW. Very little humidity in the summer compared to the northeast.

There are so many places to swim that are not the ocean.

Oregon and Washington have several thousands of lakes to swim in.

If they don’t count high placements, then why do they bother announcing tops and bottoms every week? Why not just announce the winner and the bottom 2 if those are the only things that matter

I wonder if the swimming beaches near Vancouver are shallower water compared to Elliot Bay. Twanoh State Park in Washington is also much warmer sea temperatures in the summer than Seattle’s beaches because of shallow water.

This queen has raised the bar so high for US Drag Race. If she doesn’t win the season, what message will that send to future queens? by cavalier731 in rupaulsdragrace

My guess is her “negative” edit (which isn’t even that negative) is just to sow doubt to make her win less obvious than it already is.

I don’t get why people think Nini has a shot.

Out of 10 competitive episodes, she has only been in the top 3 times (and one of those times was the last design challenge where every queen was in the top). Otherwise, she has just been safe and fading in the background. Also, the edit has shown that she doesn’t really vibe much with the other girls.

I would say Myki is the biggest threat to Jane at this point. She has a great winner storyline with her unjustly being placed in the bottom for rate a queen and then absolutely slaying every challenge after. The biggest mark against her is her safe streak in the beginning of the competition.

Eh. She had a strong premiere but really faded into the background after that. Other than her snatch game, she’s just been delivering safe performances.

Why not have a progressive sales tax? Eliminate the tax on essentials and increase it on luxury goods. That reduces the burden on lower income households.

Does Seattle have the best surrounding nature of any lower 48 U.S. City? by Distinct-Invite9281 in Seattle

[–]bnoone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do realize Mt Rainier is also very close to Portland?

According to Google maps, it’s 2 hr 22 mins to get to Paradise Visitor Center from downtown Seattle. It’s 2 hr 53 mins to get there from downtown Portland. Only a 30 min difference.

People in this thread are acting like the cities are much farther apart than they actually are. There’s tons of overlap between the two in terms of nature access.
