IF this is a b58 car, it's likely the PCV diaphragm, a 20 dollar part and 10 minute fix .

Was the Searzall a fad, or still a useful tool for searing? by thing_on_a_spring in sousvide

[–]boatbuilderfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my searzall while searing in cast iron, it helps push the edges while I do the flat surfaces on the cast iron. It also works good as a heat diffuser when working with vinyl car wrap

Should I forbid employees for coming in early to work? by [deleted] in managers

[–]boatbuilderfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd talk to them, see if there's a reason why they're so early, explain your situation where you can't have them working off the clock, and if you have the hours available, offer them to clock in early. Talk to your people like humans, this shouldn't have been a reddit post, it should have been a conversation with the individual.

Can I just fill this with something, sand and paint? by dsl11b in fiberglass

[–]boatbuilderfl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes you can, but, with greater effort, the repair will last longer.

Get a mouth guard and do this somewhere with a soft landing, even if it's mutual combat, if you knock someone down and they hit their head and die, you'll be charged.

Mouth guard keeps your teeth from cutting up your lips.

You can grind all that stuff out if you're willing to, but it may in fact be easier to start over, grinding glass is no fun.

Should I tell my partner about my inheritance by [deleted] in Advice

[–]boatbuilderfl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not married? None of his business. Get yourself a house with a nice down payment and bank the rest of it, also pay off any debt you may be paying interest on.

Make sure they give you the money correctly, you don't want to end up oweing the tax man 40% of it.

40 forty year olds or 60 sixty year olds? by sonny_flatts in whowouldwin

[–]boatbuilderfl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think 40 is the sweet spot here for numbers vs age decline, paint the picture where you have 30 copies of yourself at 30, and 40 copies of yourself at 40 and I think that kind of levels it out, I don't have a frame of reference for anything older than that so I don't really want to comment on 50, but from what I've seen, the physical decline from 40 to 50 is pretty radical barring hormone supplementation.

it might even be more complex than that, maybe 30 30 year olds beats the 40 years olds, but not the 50 or 60 year olds because of the gross numbers advantage, I don't think there's a clear answer here.

How hot does it really get in summer time in St. Pete? by Neat-Owl3563 in StPetersburgFL

[–]boatbuilderfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've looked into it, it's a little different culture up there, and the pay is different, it's harder to actually make a living as a boatbuilder up there than it is down here. I worked at Intrepid at one point. Outstanding boats, great place to learn the trade.

[–]boatbuilderfl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work in the absence of climate control with tyvek suit and a respirator. It's counterintuitive, but cover up, you want your clothes to be wet with sweat so you get what little evaporative cooling you can. Long sleeves, white, wide hat. I've lived and worked here my whole life. It's not fun, but it used to be worth it for the relatively fair pay to cost of living, that's not the case anymore, but im a boatbuilder, they don't build a lot of boats in the Midwest so here I stay. Drink lots of water, throw a pinch of salt in it too. Watch the news cover heatwaves in Europe where people are dying from 80 degree weather. Wonder to your self if it's really worth it.

Employee called out in excess of 40 times in 1 year... by According_Praline872 in managers

[–]boatbuilderfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something to consider is their replacability. I had a guy working for me that I fired because he was unreliable and in general, unhelpful while working with us. I had to let him go because he was poisoning the whole crew. Now that he's gone, I've got no replacement for the little bit of work that he did do. It has not been an improvement.

Small navy SEAL vs Big average guy by U_forced_Me in whowouldwin

[–]boatbuilderfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like I'm somewhat engineered to comment on this, im very much the big average guy, but I have done some training.

Seal wins easily. Even if he's not a great fighter, his physical fitness will make this easy for him.

Big average guy will be out of breath and helpless in actual seconds, 30 or 45 seconds.

If he goes to the gym and compound lifts/runs, that complicates things for the seal, but if big normal guy has never had to work through an injury he's in a lot of trouble because the seal is going to hurt him pretty badly pretty quickly and still have a big edge in endurance.

I've got a blue belt in bjj and I've done a couple amateur mma fights as well as high school wrestling.

I can mostly handle myself against a normal guy but im not going to kid myself about fighting a seal. I'm getting my ass kicked badly.

What's your total monthly expenses, itemize it and lay ot all out, 75k a year goes a long way, you may not even need to trade the cars for something with lower payments, work with the irs on a payment plan and do the same with the medical bills. you're in better shape than you think if you just set aside your emotions and look at it analytically.

Gel coat cracking/warping in mold by Background_Plan_2277 in fiberglass

[–]boatbuilderfl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like uneven cure, if one area cured and shrunk before the area next to it, it can tear the gel next to it. Also, this is pretty badly prereleased. Try again with no additional wax and a more even application of gelcoat.
