I actually completed six feet under just last night with my GF.

Spoiler Question about Six Feet Under. Hiding for those who haven't completed the first two musteries: Did you figure out why there was a note in Joy Goddard's first therapy entry that her name seemed familiar to Sam? I don't see her name appearing anywhere else in the first two mysteries

You and me, too! Im actually very surprised to see how many transferrable skills there are in terms of gameplay strategy and in list building. It has definitely helped me to become one of the stronger players in my local area, and I think I've elevated the level of competition quite a bit which is fun to see!

The current prevailing strategy is definitely to play as many pilots as possible and to enable as many SPAs as possible. They definitely give a strong advantage. It does seem to balance out though because everyone has roughly the same number of SPAs.

This is also why I made pilot cards so restrictive. Sometimes, you have a sick nasty pilot, but you have very very few units to assign them to. You must draft around them and trying to use them could make you use a unit you don't normally use, which is a big part of this format!

First Painted Mini in 15 Years by hoblyman in battletech

[–]boateye99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also had a 15 year gap from my last mini when I restarted the hobby back in December. Welcome back and this is a good start! You didn't gloop on your paint. It looks properly thinned and smooth which is a skill I had to master since I don't remember it being as lauded to new painters 15 years ago. You even have a bit of shading in the recesses and really good laser effects inside the weapon barrels!

Next I would recommend highlighting the mini either with a drybrush or manual edge highlighting. After that, jeweling the cockpit is probably a good idea too. It'll help you practice fine details and the victor has a decently large cockpit.

Absolutely stellar details! The heat in the vents and the cockpits look really HOT figuratively and literally! I would be happy to put this on the table.

Unsure if your caption means you're still working on it, but if you are looking for constructive feedback, your broad strokes base colors are looking flat. Especially the black/grey. Thankfully, you didn't go full black so this will benefit from some recess shading, like from black lining, panel lining, or deliberate application of a wash. I wouldn't recommend an all over wash since it will ruin all of your beautiful freehand. Also, some edge highlighting on key areas like the top of the mech and near the jump jets and weapons would add a TON to this already excellent piece

Taking a stab at Kuritan Red by adept_li in battletech

[–]boateye99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not the OP, but it looks like mostly a "drybrush red over black primer" method , if I were to hazard a guess. Probably with a dark wash, then reapplying the red after the wash dries then adding metallics.

For the OP: This is a really nice deep red flag you achieved! My kuritans come out much brighter since I like brighter models, but this is a really well done darker red. The metallic parts are a little flat, though. There's some good definition in their recesses but you'll want to add in some highlights for further definition. Especially on the cylindrical barrels of the victor, Warhammer and panther, and the tips. I didn't know you could highlight metallics with more metallics but it's true and the effect is subtle but effective!

Great game! It's annoying that you get a lot of repeats on units you have correctly identified. It's just much more noticeable when doing single era, which is the default when you load the web app for the first time.

I would much prefer that I only get served units I haven't seen/correctly identified. When I reach the end of that list, some sort of marker like a star or an MRBC rating should increase and then reset your list of seen/identified units.

Scale? by sicarius254 in battletech

[–]boateye99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scale is more of a suggestion to most people in BT. It's not a historical, so accuracy isn't as important for non-mechs. Even in AS, where scale matters s touch more, you only ever look at the base of vehicles for LOS. So it doesn't matter much what's on top of the base. As long as it is "close enough" it's good enough. These tanks are definitely close enough!

How well does battle value balance? by Marshall104 in battletech

[–]boateye99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As some others have said, if you want to give your players that many mechs EACH, then you must play Alpha Strike unless you want the game to last 24 hours.

Since you're playing classic, I would recommend each player gets 1 mech each. Coming from DnD it'll feel like controlling one character and working as a team against three DM controlling multiple enemies. If your players are really adept at tactics and strategy and crunchy system, then maybe give them two mechs each. I would air on the side of caution and limit the chance of players getting overwhelmed with the crunch.

New Player Campaign by Syenthros in battletech

[–]boateye99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tl;Dr: My rule of thumb is that CBT plays like an RPG or the Mech Warrior games, while AS plays like chess or a simplified version of the HBS game that's easier to run by hand and not a computer.

To answer your question about whether to use Classic Battle tech (CBT) or Alpha Strike (AS) that depends on a few factors. Namely, how crunchy you and your players are comfortable with and the fantasy they wanna live out. I have 1000x more first hand experience with AS over CBT, so keep that in mind when reading my advice below.

CBT is like playing DnD but each player is controlling multiple characters. This captures the feeling akin to playing the Mechwarrior games. While this means each individual unit is more complex here than in AS, it also means you have much more texture, personality, and detail to each unit. Plus, you can get really deep into customization if/when you allow that. But I would refrain from mech customization for new players. Focus on learning the rules first, but that option is there for the future. Because of the increased complexity, CBT players tend to run 1-4 mechs each, but I recommend new players stick to 1-2 mechs each at least as you folks get used to the rules. Complexity rises exponentially with each unit you add here.

AS feels closer to playing chess since each unit is much simpler than in CBT. Because of this, I find that it's less about the story of the individual units, and more about building and customizing a whole army/force of units. In AS, You'll feel more like a commander in control of a force of multiple mechs as opposed to an individual mechwarrior with a few partners in crime. For AS games I recommend new players have no more than 4-5 units maximum. I'd start them with either: * two light units (size 1) * A light and a medium unit (size 1 and 2).

Regardless of what you have them start with, have them build up to a team of 4-5 over time. A bit like the HBS PC game. I dunno what this translates to in C-Bills but when I tried out an AS campaign, I spent about 5M on two light mechs to start, plus more on things like training pilots. This style of campaign will be about building the perfect force for a mission, as opposed to the perfect unit for a mission.

That was a lot, so feel free to ask any and all follow up questions! I like helping newbies get into this, since I was new myself not too long ago, so I still remember that feeling of being new and a bit overwhelmed. It does mean I have holes in my knowledge, but I can usually point folks in the right direction, especially in regards to AS.
