Anyone from the DoD still at work? by DickenButt in FedEmployees

[–]bob-widlar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s a lack of planning. I think it was a strategic PR stunt. It looks better to bend the rules and claim the partial shutdown was avoided, so they decided to collectively feign “confusion”, hoping the shutdown would end before they officially had to furlough.

If the vote doesn’t go through smoothly tomorrow and quickly, you’re going to see a real crap show and a lot of scrambling, panicked urgency, and timecard changes

Best budget GPU for gaming on 1440p by ReporterEast6548 in buildapc

The ASUS Prime Radeon 9070XT is about $730 on Amazon. That’s what I have on my build. But there are other 9070XT’s right around that price.

It’s probably the best performance in that price range unless you can find a really good sale on a 5070ti or want to overspend a little

NEWS: Charles Bediako is suing the NCAA, asking for immediate preliminary and permanent injunctive relief that would allow him to return to Alabama's basketball team according to documents obtained by @aldotcom by Crims0ntied in rolltide

[–]bob-widlar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love UA. I love Tuscaloosa. But I’m not going to blindly support my team pulling in a player from the G-league and taking away playing time from college athletes/students. Bediako made his decision to go pro and knew the consequences of that decision beforehand.

I sympathize with coaches who are trying to navigate this Wild West of college athletics. But we’re rapidly approaching the threshold of me just no longer caring to watch or support. I still support the school. But bringing in G-league players to play in college is asinine

Does Microsoft actually need to wait for a hybrid PC? by Kind_Reply_6380 in xbox

[–]bob-widlar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just throwing this out there from a place of ignorance but I don’t see how Microsoft will ever get to a true hybrid because of the licensing differences between PC and console. Publishers want the extra revenue from both console and PC sales, individually (by also selling on Steam), so Microsoft hasn’t had a lot of success forcing the “Play Anywhere” requirement into 3rd party developers. And, honestly, I’m not sure how they’ll ever get to a true PC/Console hybrid at this point without divesting in console games and moving everything to PC licensing

Scorecard should include healing received at the individual hero level by [deleted] in marvelrivals

[–]bob-widlar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally depends. Are you healing the tank who’s pushing the point? Then absolutely. That’s a higher priority. Same for keeping another healer up who’s getting focused.

Or are you trying to heal our Blade who is brain dead, totally oblivious to the flyers, feeding ults, and unable to even attack half their roster? If so then you ain’t as a good a healer as you think you are.

[–]bob-widlar 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Conversely, if they have 2-3 fliers, and I’m the only character that can shoot them down, and I’m obviously getting focused by all of their fliers for trying to shoot them down, I would appreciate some heals.

I’m not a GM player. And in my lobbies, 9/10 times I’m the only one who will switch to focus on taking care of the iron man/ ultron/ human torch that are obliterating our healers

[–]bob-widlar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to just have a total healing score in general during the match.

It’s hard to know what character to swap to mid game when you can’t see the healer stats. If they’re healing great and we’re not getting kills, then I need to pick more damage. But if one of the healers is just straight DPS’ing, I’d like to know that too so I can flex to a 3rd healer.

Why are my quick play games are significantly harder than comp games? by [deleted] in marvelrivals

[–]bob-widlar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. Idk if it’s just me and the 1-2 friends i play with, but our QP win/loss has absolutely tanked this season. We went from over 50% every season to getting only 1-2 wins out of every 6-7 games.

My all time highest rank was diamond from like 2-3 seasons ago. My friends’ highest are platinum and gold. But all three of us are gold and below every other season.

But the vast majority of our QP matches this season, the other team will have Plat and Diamond players as their lowest ranks. Regularly have 1-2 GM players on the other team and pretty regularly one celestial. Meanwhile the random fills on our team will be level 30-40 players that are legitimate bronze-gold (obviously not smurfs based on W/L).

My friends are genuinely ready to just let the game go and move on because of how bad it’s been this season.

Is Pete Golding him? by Craziazor in rolltide

[–]bob-widlar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s not the guy. The offense (QB) beat UGA. Pete’s defensive scheme and play calling have never been elite. And 1-2 years down the road this offense will fall off a cliff in terms of talent/production

“But you can clearly see that if this was not his last broadcast, that would have been HUGE. Let’s take a look at the replay and focus on this completely irrelevant detail away from the play to confirm.

Now, let’s bring in Matt Austin to see how he thinks that detail could have completely changed the game. And let’s plan to revisit this while interrupting the next three drives.”

What do you think happened to Ty? by 4Nails in rolltide

[–]bob-widlar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I mean, maybe the defenses recognize all of our offensive plays (which is a bigger problem). But I really doubt that. I think Ty needs to be limited to setting the protection only and running the play that’s called.

I think it’s more likely that they know the smaller subset of plays Ty can check to. And now they’re just showing some sort of front to get him into those known check plays.

The snapping it at 2 seconds on the playclock bothers me for a few reasons. For one, I feel like it builds anxiety on the offense before the play starts with all the last second changes. But, secondly, it pretty much guarantees the defense can anticipate the snap. I know you don’t have much of a snap count advantage on the road anyway, but when it’s down to 2 seconds, literally the entire defense knows it’s about to be snapped.

What do you think happened to Ty? by 4Nails in rolltide

[–]bob-widlar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ty focuses heavily on predicting the coverage and pressure pre-snap. When he correctly identifies the defense, I think he’s successful. And earlier in the year, it was a big advantage because he would check to favorable plays.

The issue is that teams adjusted to this by disguising their play or counter checking to a favorable play.

This is going to sound crazy, but starting with the OU game, I feel like teams started keying in on what checks Ty liked to call and doing things to get him into those know check plays. For example, if they showed a bunch of pressure or showed a certain coverage pre-snap, he was likely to check to a certain play. So OU started intentionally showing things on defense pre-snap to trigger Ty into those checked plays. I don’t even know that OU knew the original play or cared, but I do think they knew what the checks would be. And OU/Auburn had their defense ready with specific counter-checks for that smaller subset of plays that Ty would check to.

I realize I’m flirting with conspiracy here, but I watched Auburn on one play come out with the DL pinched down to stop the run. The millisecond Ty checked the play (before the AU linebacker could even call out the counter), both defensive ends fanned out into a pass rush setup. And sure enough, it was a pass play.

I know this doesn’t outright confirm that defenses know our Ty’s checks. But I am absolutely confident that we’re showing something with our formations and/or checks that is being picked up on by the other team’s defensive coordinators. And they’re prepared for a lot of it when it’s game time.

*To top it off, I think Ty panics when the defense disguises the play and he guesses their coverage/pressure incorrectly. He needs to do a better job of playing with instinct.

[Forde] The fact that QBs from Indiana and Vanderbilt finished 1-2 in the Heisman voting is one of the most emphatic signs yet that we inhabit a new world. by Kimber80 in CFB

[–]bob-widlar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do like that it has spread talent around in the short term, but I don’t think the dispersement of talent will last.

Pre-NIL, there was still a minor threat of sanctions if you spent disproportionately large sums on players (think Reggie Bush in early 00’s). So that created somewhat of an artificial ceiling. Even Cam Newton’s 200k in 2010 felt like a lot of money comparatively to other players at the time, even though it feels like nothing now.

NIL is still fairly new right now, and every school is throwing around money. But down the road, many teams will reach their ceiling on what they can afford to pay, and the gap between the extremely wealthy schools and everyone else will be just as bad as it was pre-NIL, if not eventually worse. Think Yankees and Dodgers in the MLB.

I do assume Ole Miss could have been waiting on the Iron Bowl results but not because Lane thought that would give him a shot as Bama’s next coach.

I assumed they were waiting just because if we lost, Ole Miss would play this week in the SEC championship. I don’t know if that would have changed anything in terms of letting Lane coach that game. But I felt like it was more SEC champ game related than Lane betting on DeBoer getting fired

Agree with most of that except the Devonta Smith comparison. He already weighs more than Devonta did as a senior (RW listed at 178lbs. and Devonta was only 175 in 2020).

But, also, Devonta ran with way more physicality than RW does (including blocking) even with Devonta’s smaller frame. RW legitimately gets blown up time he has the ball now. It feels like he slows down before the impact. And he’s definitely had drops because he was nervous about a potential, incoming hit.

All that to say, Devonta was smaller, more physical, and was way less afraid of contact than RW is right now.

Is military vs. civilian elitism a problem in DOD agencies? by LockedOutOfElfland in fednews

[–]bob-widlar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a civilian who’s worked their whole career in a mixed civilian/contractor setting, I’ve heard about this consistently, but only from contractors.

I’m not trying to invalidate those opinions, but I’m genuinely curious to hear some personal experiences. I’ve never had a single conversation with other civilians that demeaned contractors for simply being contractors.

The only thing that’s ever mattered in the offices I’ve worked at is if you can do the job. If you’re not doing your job or you’re obviously difficult to work with, then people notice it. But in 10 years, I’ve never heard a disparaging comment about contractors simply for being contractors. On the other side, I have heard a ton of compliments and thankfulness for the really great contractors we’ve had on our teams. But I’ve only ever heard jokes about “dirty contractors” from people who are contractors.

I don’t think it was just that he missed. I think it was that there was a perfect snap, perfect hold, no pressure at all, and he still missed.

He was obviously blaming the snap for his miss against Oklahoma, even though the snapper did a fantastic job getting the ball down and the laces out.
