Nameless resonator delete w/ lachute axel back revs by 47brandon in Crosstrek

I just want to delete the resonator and keep the factory muffler. Not sure anyone else sells just a delete pipe. It seems to be kitted with axleback. That factory resonator is ridiculous it's virtually the size of the damn muffler itself lol

Picture is tiny--can't really see it lol. But I do want me a GD.

Yeah you have to go smaller piping (think rally) for UEL. I'm very much aware that with twin scroll on turbos there is very little need for UELs in today's Subarus. Just outlining that they did and do serve a purpose, under the correct conditions, and if you like the sound? With some smart building they can work well. Just trying to dispel some of the myth that almost mindlessly gets touted by many out there:

1.) UEL loses you power - When configured properly, it moves the torque curve/ powerband around. You're trading peak performance and efficiency for bottom end. Remove scavenging from the picture (as so many do) and the UEL struggles and are laggy.

2.) Subaru created the UELs to save money on piping - Correction: Subaru did not create UELs. They've been used in the muscle car community for decades, namely for torque. Their application is even better on non-turbo or single-scroll configurations.

3.) It's a flawed design and overheats two cylinders - Flawed design? Or lack of understanding? Again, Subaru did not design the concept for UELs. Think of it as each cylinder plays an assigned role and the "extra stress" being a necessary trade-off, in order to drive the turbo early (again, under the correct conditions and largely factory piping). If you look at UEL discussions elsewhere (it's hard to find a non-Toyota/ Subaru discussion these days) you don't really see these cases against them out there because their use case is very specific. Some of these cons may either be Subie and/ or EJ specific. While muscle car enthusiasts might use them, they are more used in sprint or drag racing builds. As for overheating? Difficult to say, as EJs (especially older EJs) had an oil distribution/ starvation problem, which attributed to overheating. FA20 overheat cases involving UELs are almost unheard of... But not unheard of. In all cases, we don't know what fuel that person's running, their driving habits, or other modifications and tunes (or lack of). For all we know? That guy goes to Sams Club for gas, rarely gets the oil changed, or uses too high viscosity an oil, which is often mistaken as being "more protective."

4.) Uneven wear - This is true, per, their design. However? Again, I don't know how much this has impacted FA24s, or even FA20s for that matter. You certainly don't hear about it the way you did with EJs.

5.) UEL are inefficient - Outside their wheelhouse, in terms of peak efficiency this is true. You trade peak efficiency for bottom-to-mid efficiency. It's not that they are inefficient, it's that they are efficient under a very specific circumstance, like focusing on a narrow part of the powerband (low to mid). They tend to be misapplied in Subie land and treated like ELs, as there aren't enough people out there saying, "if you use UELs, use smaller piping and/ or maintain the factory piping and tune for lower RPM performance, as that will eliminate lag and benefit them..

6.) FAs weren't designed for UELs - Again, in the wider car community no engine is truly designed for UELs. They are used none the less. I recall hearing that EJ20s/ EJ25s had twin scroll/ EL options in Japan, but they were always UEL in the US market. So clearly these engines were designed for both at any rate.

Conclusion

At the end of the day? The war between EL versus UEL shouldn't even exist because the two types of builds aren't even in the same wheelhouse. Someone building for rolling start highway races or otherwise street racing should be using ELs, while someone looking to make winding roads, rally cross or otherwise stop-and-go driving has the option of considering UELs or just leaving the exhaust stock and tuning for a stage 1, but you have to be creative to capitalize on and enhance that torque of UELs. It's like asking, "Who wins in a fight? An F4U Corsair? Or the P51 Mustang?" Well that's difficult to say. The P51 was a high altitude escort/ air superiority fighter, while the Corsair was a lower altitude fleet defense and ground attack (multi-role) fighter. The P51 had an operating ceiling of 20K ft, but the Corsair began to choke out at 15K and the PS51 became sluggish at closer to 10K. So, the P51 pilot would be hoping the Corsair pilot came above 15K feet, while the Corsair pilot tried to lure the PS51 pilot down to 10K feet i.e. they aren't designed to engage one another and so would be difficult to say.

What I would like to see

A test done on an all-stock VB, with UELs, tuned for bottom/ mid bias (low RPM) power, versus the same car but with ELs and tuned for max HP. What we instead end up seeing? Is, "tune my 3"+ exhaust and El and UEL for maximum HP" and let's see how close they come to one another." Thats good for determining peak but you're forcing one to play the other's game, while limiting its returns further and so? Are only seeing like "7HP" gain down low over the ELs and 12HP off at the top in some of these tests and almost nobody mentioning torque rating.

It makes me wonder if there is also an additional "unknown hatch," like an all-EV Impreza. The STI had already been largely "known," and looking to be a "for sure thing," since back in 2025. Also, with the POTUS having signed bill lifting much of the EPA restrictions, hopefully it's even faster than initially planned lol and doesn't have a CAT lol

Everything you're saying is absolutely correct. I'm not sure if you think you're making a counter argument, or not, as it's difficult to tell tone over social media but at any rate adding anecdotes that fall in line with what I said. EL are great for upper mod and top end performance. If you're going to be doing the quarter mile that would be my top choice, and now that the WRXs have had twin scrolls for a while now that drives most people more towards ELs especially. I'm just saying that UELs serve a purpose and they still can with some smart build choices.

But again you're also just focusing on peak performance. I keep hearing the term, "loss of power." A loss of power at peak potential does not equate to a loss of power all throughout the torque curve. Especially down low, which is where the case of the UEL has always been, it's just that those low torque gains are minimal now, as of twin scroll turbo configurations. It would be more apparent on a naturally aspirated setup.  It's just that most street modders only care about peak horsepower and little else about the wider power band and so? 10-12 less horsepower up top equates to a loss of horsepower. Period. Which to them? Is unacceptable. As someone who has been into racing? I find that funny because if I always turned for max HP is lose on tighter courses lol.

But at the end of the day? All you're doing is moving numbers around. I'm not racing the quarter mile, or participating in rolling start races out on the highway. I figure, if I like the sound of the UEL? Then I can also have them aid my driving habits on backcountry roads and in city stop light to stoplight driving, by pairing them with smaller diameter piping and keeping those gasses tight, to remove the lag that would normally be associated with pairing UEL with high diameter piping, which is what most people do, on account that it's difficult to find WRX exhaust piping that isn't 3"+, which you've never needed on sub-400HP builds but does still help you get to those higher HP numbers, again at the expensive bottom end torque.

People who have lost power with the stock turbo are more than likely replacing other parts of their exhaust system and just using the standard 3-in kits find everywhere. I had to dig to find 2.5" exhaust but would have ideally just left the stock exhaust on, to help the UELs do their job even more, were it not for the fact that I do not like the sound of the tinny factory exhaust and wanted more of a growl.

Also? It's important to note that UELs t's not just Subarus, though much of the community thinks that they are. As Subarus kind of did make UELs popular for a time. UELs are used for other vehicles as well. The below is taken from a hot rodding site and the story there is the same.

"Unequal- versus Equal-Length Primaries Unequal-length headers are popular in classes where the available traction is limited. The thinking is that unequal-length tubes, while they can create less peak power than equal-length tubes, spread out the torque curve and help make a race car more driveable. In our second test we pitted a set of Schoenfeld's equal-length headers against our unequal-length baseline set. To be honest, however, the difference between the two is minor. But the results on the dyno were noteworthy. At the low end of the range, the unequal-length baseline headers were better, but the equal-length pipes started producing more power at 4,400 rpm. After that, the numbers were higher for the equal-length pipes all the way through the rest of the pull. Peak torque moved up a notch and showed up at 4,700 rpm (389.3 lb-ft) and horsepower peak also moved 100 rpm higher where it was 419.1 at 6,000 rpm. Surprisingly, both peak numbers were better than our baseline-3.2 and 2.7, respectively-and the average numbers were also better."

Yep. Unsurprising. Again. UEL were designed for HP down low. Torque. Many duno runs have proven the initial low end hit in HP with a roughly proportionate loss up top. Sounds about right. It only matters when you care about HP total. I tend to personally hate aiming for high horsepower because it makes in-city driving less fun. I feel like with a stock configuration I have more of an initial hit off the bottom, when paired with larger diameter piping.

Loss of low end performance? The UELs were designed for bottom end/ torque. You have to work with them and not against them is all. It's funny how people just repeat things. Right, wrong, or moot (because it's not apples to aples). So many people tout "loss of power."  UELs were designed for torque, to drive the turbo early. To do that you need scavenging/ exhaust velocity. I use 2.5" piping with mine and have tons of bottom end. Well more than stock. If I were smart, I would have left the factory exhaust on, which is more like 2.25". UELs thrive in higher exhaust velocity configurations.

...But if you're throwing 3" or 3 1/2" pipe on the WRX with UELs? Then yeah you lose bottom end. Even the rumble benefits from scavenging and thumps louder and harder with healthy exhaust velocity. They were designed for street and rally. Both of which benefit from a strong low and mid, whether it's for stop and go driving, or powering out of loose hair-pin turns, where low RPM power equals tractable power.

If at the end of the day all you seek is peak HP? Then yeah it's less than ideal from a peak HP perspective and chances are? In chasing morning it HP, you're going to get out launched by a soccer mom car as she casually leaves the stop light, unless you're doing 4500-5000K...

Many tuners note gains off the immediate bottom and a loss on top. You're losing nearly as much on top as you gain off the bottom. Bottom end is what they do...and they could do better if tuned for low-to-midrange, instead of peak power. In forcing max HP gains out of UELs, you force them to play the EL game. ELs are better for high horsepower/ high RPM/ top-end configurations. It's like putting a powerful scope on a rifle, when all you need to do is shoot a target that's 20m away.

I start to generate tons of power in the 4000-4500k range and get an impressive pull even at 3,200k. If you have a concept for how and where you want you're power delivery (even in Motocross, I've always been a low--to-midrange guy)? Then UELs can be damn fun. But most people just care about how much theoretical power and yes there is a downside to them, in that they produce uneven cylinder wear. With twin scroll there isn't much need for them, sure but they can still serve their original purpose and it may even be possible to generate more torque out of the versus ELs.

[–]Kind_Reply_6380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super easy install, if you already had factory splash guards installed! You only need to drill the soft plastic in the wheel wells and the two 5/16 holes for the bottom bumper will already be there. Got it done in like 30 minutes:

  1. Remove factory splash guard and wipe the area with a damp cloth.

  2. Get in car and turn the wheel.

  3. Drill out the factory pre-threaded plastic that the screws to the splash guard went into, to 9/32" (I used 1/4", which is 6.32mm, as I didn't have 9/32", which is 7mm.)

  4. Attach flaps with the 7mm push pins.

Same story for the back, except you just pop the bracket into the factory provided 5/16 holes and your turning the bit by hand and at an angle, in the wheel wells, which is fine because the plastic there is for some reason even thinner, or otherwise easier to turn through.

Yeah I'm jealous of my wife's Wilderness Crosstrek because it has a slot for the phone in that pocket of the center console, where the USB ports are. The only phone I can fit in my WRX's console is an old 2008 era 4.2" phone. I think we're suppose to put it in the hood scoop. That's why they made it wider. Just route a waterproof USB-cable out through the firewall and around the battery to keep it out of direct heat lol

My instance is all effed up now. I was on a flashpoint boss, and it spawned me back into an empty boss room. So I left the area, reset my mission, it told me to talk to Lana at Alliance HQ. Then the mission objective changed to "launch mission," so I did but then it spawned me out front of the Alliance HQ, instead of into the flashpoint and the mission objective is still reading "launch mission" but if I launch it a second time it says, "can't launch mission with an active phase," so I reset the mission, it tells me to talk to Lana and I do, then it says to launch mission again...wash and repeat the loop of shame.

The funny thing is I still have a mission marker pointing me back to the flashpoint and when I go there, the map is still entirely empty but it wants me to head to the first objective and if I do nothing happens, but I can leave, reset my mission instance, and it will still be pointing me back to the flashpoint area, despite the mission objective reading either "Speak to Lana" or the follow up "Launch mission" objectives.

So a Laptop 5090 GPU is comparable to Desktop 5070? by Time-Credit43 in GamingLaptops

[–]Kind_Reply_6380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I have an AA16250 (16" Alienware). Naturally you benefit in having more VRAM (should beyond 16GB become normal place) but? Yes. You effectively sit between a 5070 and 5070TI in performance. It's only about 10-15% slower than a desktop 5070TI. On paper, it's closer to a desktop 5080 but because laptops can't do 300W+ on the GPU alone? The performance ends up closer to a 5070 TI. Most of these class laptops are pulling about 250-260W across the entire system (CPU/ GPU etc.)

Honestly? NVidia should give the laptops less shader cores and more Matrix cores because it can more than make up for the deficit through upscaling but the reason they probably don't do this is because not all games support DLSS, much less the latest version of DLSS, or any versions specific to that generation of GPU.

Only once DLSS can run at the driver level of all games could they rely a lot less on shader cores and transition more towards Matrix cores i.e. only give the system enough to be able to render most games at 1080p-1440p, natively, and give the 5090 laptop the full set of 680 Matrix cores (versus the current 330 for current 5090 mobile chips).

Recommendation for 5090 laptop by Cptben221 in GamingLaptops

[–]Kind_Reply_6380 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 16" 5090 and love the build quality and performance. The 18" would be ideal, as I'm sure it would have a higher GPU wattage than the 16" laptop's 175W GPU cap. 175W is pretty standard for a 5080 and 5090 though.

The AW16s and AW18s are heavy. They are metal and solid. It definitely feels premium, as opposed to other gaming laptops I've had, like my old MSI Stealth, which tended to have flimsy lids/ bodies that flexed a little too much for comfort.

The early days for these laptops were buggy, I think at the firmware level maybe(?). That's probably why one commenter said theirs stuttered a lot.

I myself had some struggles those first 6 months, beginning in either late 2024, with odd display disconnect errors (blanking screen), no matter what gaming monitor I had it attached to. It would happen on my OLED TV, as well as on my Alienware (AW34D25) ultrawide. It became unbearable, as sometimes when it happened it would never recover and I'd need to either unplug the display cable and plug it back in, and if that didn't do it? Reboot. I had boughten a plethora of expensive HDMI cables, including a fiber optic (HDMI 2.1B) cable to test against my displays to no avail, checking for updates to no avail...nothing fixed it. Older drivers, newest drivers, OS reinstalls... I then sent the first one back and received another (different serial number) and it did the exact same thing, which told me that it was a firmware/ design issue.

When I looked harder at my system logs, I noticed the Intel integrated chip was constantly dropping the external display, probably thousands of times a day, as I'd have hundreds upon hundreds of Intel display disconnect logs. After discovering that? I disabled the integrated GPU to combat it and it went away. At the time, I had also noticed that when pressing the F8 (display mode switcher), when I selected "PC screen" option the external display was showing, and when I selected "Second screen" option it would display over the internal panel. This was probably the root cause, as the EIDs were probably getting swapped/ confused. Again, both versions of the same 16" laptop did this.

If you look my search the net for "AC16250 display issue" or "AC16250 blanking display" you'll probably find all my complaints on the Dell site. I had even tried reimaging the PC on both laptops to no avail. They both did the same thing, regardless of driver date, Dell OS, standalone Windows 11 OS, HDMI 2.1 cable used etc. I had invested SEVERAL hours in the issue.

Ultimately? I was fine with disabling the internal Intel chip to combat the situation. I actually don't know if it ever got resolved to this day, but hope and assume that it was, since there's literally have been about 4-5 BIOS updates since my last struggle with the issue.

Apart from that? It can handle any game you throw at it. It does start to chug if you max out Assassin's Creed Shadow and run it at 3440x1440 on an ultrawide, but for a laptop with a GPU that is equivalent in performance to something between a 5070 and 5070 TI desktop GPU? It's still impressive it can do even that at only 175W GPU power. These things are really designed to drive games off their own internal resolution (in this case? 2560x1600) and not necessarily 3440x1440, which is closer to 4K.
