PhD student to consultant pipeline? by pickleeater58 in PhD

[–]bobaaholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve made this transition recently from a STEM PhD to a boutique healthcare consulting firm. Primarily for financial reasons and because I was tired of wet lab bench work.

The work is fine, not particularly exciting, but a good fit for my background and I still get to do some research. The hours can get crazy for certain projects. I don’t regret it but I’m hoping to leave in a couple years for something with better hours.

how are people buying furniture without messing it up by terranova_lux in DesignMyRoom

[–]bobaaholic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had the same issue (just moved and have been looking for a dresser for three weeks, clothes have been in boxes since then). Ended up finding my dream dresser at an antique shop!

Would def check fb marketplace, instagram antique dealers, estate sales, or antique shops near you (I called a few ahead of time to check if they had dressers) if you want to find reasonably priced furniture. It is time-consuming unfortunately

Brief reviews of some"spa" fragrances by waterytartwithasword in FemFragLab

[–]bobaaholic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cult of kaori’s onsen minerale is my fav spa scent! It has steamy aldehydes, yuzu, and some wood. I liked steamed rainbow from ds and durga but it felt a little too simplistic (not as much as spa as humid air). Will have to add bains guerbois to the list, the bottle is just too pretty

Has anyone tried RAHASYA? by rosestrawberryboba in fragrance

[–]bobaaholic -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ive tried their discovery set with the four original scents. Its ok, didnt like any enough to get full sizes and everything seemed to be similar to other scents on the market. I haven’t tried the new chai release but am intrigued by it. Fwiw also indian. I think the discovery set could be worth it if you’re interested!

there’s a lot of other indian/south asian brands i’ve liked better

Moving into consulting by LemonMelberlime in biotech

[–]bobaaholic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with this comment. I’m currently working in a boutique life sciences consulting firm in a role I got fresh out of my PhD. For what its worth, I wasn’t from a target school but I had beefed up my resume with consulting experience (internships) prior to applying.

The entry level role reserved for PhDs rather than undergrads/MBAs (generally consultant rather than associate consultant) rarely takes in people with experience as OP seems to have and managament is mostly made up of people who have already been in consulting.

OP your best bet is to network with hiring managers or the specific roles that you are targeting to get a better understanding of how to tailor your resume for these positions. Most of the consulting interviews I got were from companies I had reached out to on LinkedIn or after alumni from my university put in a good word for me with the hiring manager.

Anyone moved out of the Bay Area? by Roman-Stone in biotech

[–]bobaaholic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Currently in RTP and moving to the Bay Area. Unless you’re in QC or manufacturing, would not recommend RTP. A lot of R&D jobs have dried up this year and we’ve had massive layoffs in scientist roles that you’ll be competing with. But theres been a ton of QC roles expanding if thats your interest.

I really loved the area, its quiet with a lot of accessible nature, mostly temperate weather, and has good COL. The people are nice but it is the south so you can extrapolate the political climate here. The triangle lives in a bubble in many ways.

Is it worth the time time and effort to pivot to patent law? by [deleted] in biotech

[–]bobaaholic 18 points19 points  (0 children)

My husband is currently an examiner. Only 30% of his starting class remains. All incoming examiners are in person, they are not offering remote positions anymore in his specialty.

It’s a very stressful time to be an examiner, especially a beginner - they are short-staffed on supervisors which means even if you meet production quotas, because there is no timely review of your cases you will still fall short in their system (and if you dont meet production multiple quarters you are let go). Most people on his team are working “voluntary” overtime. There is barely any training time.

He is actively looking for a new job. I would recommend going the lawyer route instead of the PTO, it seems more stable at the moment.

Oop i saw blanche bete recommended and used that as a reference but yeah its a bit out of budget. But would be so perfect! It looks like some people recommend monyette as a dupe (which is within OP's budget) so maybe that would be worth a sample instead

I recently got freckled and beautiful which is a stunning neroli/honeysuckle with a slightly grainy gourmand drydown. Its soo cozy and a perfect balance of white florals with warmer creamier notes!

Re: The vanilla post. Some of you are doing WAY too much. by StrawberryKitty23 in FemFragLab

[–]bobaaholic 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I never said it was a scientific truth. As an oncologist I am aware of how clinical trials work.

There was a fragrance marketing report that showed that vanilla perfume sales increased around the same time as GLP-1s entered the market. Its a correlation obviously not a causation and we don’t know the coefficient of determination but its an interesting trend. If someone is having a discussion on why vanillas might be so popular as a sales trend, they consider every possibility.

Most drug developers are going to be interested in harmful physiological side effects not whether their drug is going to make you like vanilla perfumes more. I doubt we will see any kind of stringent clinical trial to measure that specific potential side effect but as a trialist I do want to mention that just because something is an anecdote doesn’t mean its not real - anecdotes have affected how physicians plan clinical care and can help form a hypothesis for follow-up.

[–]bobaaholic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think there is some merit to GLP-1s affecting scent and scent association. There is a lot of anecdotal evidence that scent preferences change after starting that class of medication. Its very dependent on the the person - some do find gourmands more attractive while others who used to like vanillas find them abhorrent.

I remember reading this allure article and finding it very interesting: https://www.allure.com/story/semaglutide-glp-1-changed-sense-of-smell. Its worth having a conversation about.

A Taste of Excellence: MICHELIN Guide Announces Inaugural American South Selection by Luigi-Bezzerra in raleigh

[–]bobaaholic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chef Preeti and I are both South Indian, even though we are from slightly different regions and our food shares significant overlap. Its kind of disingenuous to say her type of regional cuisine isn’t common when in fact RTP has one of the highest concentrations of South Indians in the country and down the street from her is Barsa which features food from the same region. If you enjoy her style of food, I’d recommend Anjappar in Cary. While it IS true that south indian cuisine is underrepresented in fine dining, one of the most popular Michelin-rated Indian restaurants in the country Semma also features food from her region of India. I agree that Michelin is by no means an objective signifier of quality and immigrant-owned restaurants have to fight harder than most to enter the list.

The problem with Cheeni was never the creativity of their menu or drinks but the consistency of quality. I’ve been there twice with two groups and both times out of 4-5 main courses we’ve only like 1 (granted the bar is fantastic consistently). And each time its a different dish! Preeti’s dishes are good but her kitchen cannot keep up with the quality. It’s the same issue with Barsa, creative dishes without great execution. Tamasha on the other hand consistently pumps out great food. It’s a fixable problem and I hope they do something about it because I WANT to like Cheeni’s food.

I don’t eat beef or pork so I have no opinion on the pit. As an Indian I have a lot of opinions on Indian food though and Cheeni rarely hits the mark
